"Not I!": Strategies Of Post-Millennial Confessionalistic Poetry, Charlotte J. Pence

With the technological ability and pop-cultural fascination to record private moments and distribute them, poetry that reveals personal details and conflates the identity between speaker and author must feel the effects of what could be viewed as an over-saturation of the confessional—which was during the 1950s and 1960s with Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and Sylvia Plath a political, rebellious act. It is far from that now. In this Kim Kardashian era, revealing sex tapes are used as marketing tools to launch careers whereas once they destroyed careers. Dr. Barbara J. King: “How Animals Grieve”, Barbara J. King

Originally scheduled to appear during the 2013-14 season, Dr. Barbara J. King is a biological anthropologist and science writer at the College of William and Mary. Her latest book How Animals Grieve reflects her keen interest in animal emotion and cognition. King contributes weekly to NPR.org’s 13.7 Cosmos and Culture blog and writes regularly for The Times Literary Supplement. At home in Virginia, she and her husband care for rescued cats.

From Orsino’s opening line, “If music be the food of love, play on,” to Feste’s concluding song of solitude, William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, or What You Will is relentlessly full of music, whether explicitly calling for sound or indirectly invoking references to musical ideas (1.1.1). Shakespeare utilizes music not only to entertain the listeners of his plays but also to employ its inane ability to enhance and empower human speech. The musicality of this play, first performed at a feast on February 2, 1602, would have been understood and appreciated by its original audience as Elizabethan England experienced a golden …
