From the very earliest time of the Christian era, candidates for admission into membership of the Christian Church were first duly instructed and prepared. In the early days such instruction was to prepare them for baptism; for Baptism is the Sacrament of initiation, and it was natural that this mission-work of those days concentrated on adults. It seems to have exhibited various degrees of thoroughness. Without question such instruction was made a matter of prime importance in the Apostolic Age. This paper is written more from the historical, than the dogmatical or liturgical point of view, yet we of the Lutheran faith treating the subject of baptism must certainly recognize the accusations of the anti-paedo-baptists who accuse us: "That infant baptism, taken as a whole and throughout its history, has been the most serious departure from Apostolic Christianity and evangelical faith that the world has to show" hence there is the point in this paper, namely to vindicate the Lutheran and Apostolic usage.

It has been raised in the Norwegian Lutheran Church. An attempt is being fostered, with an energy and persistence worthy of a better cause to revive upon American soil the lay activities connected with the career of Hans Nielsen Hauge. The first question to be decided is, Is the woman of v. 1 Gomer or some other woman? Many varying opinions have been expressed, the text has been changed, passages have been stricken, in an effort to find the answer to this question. Steuernagel's suggestion in support of the identity of the woman in chap. 3 with Gomer, name1y, that originally chaps. 1 and 3 formed an uninterrupted narrative and were later separated by ignorant compilers or editors, is altogether unwarranted and serves to show to what extremes commentators have gone in their efforts to solve this vexing question.
