For all practical purposes there are but two ways or thinking about God. The one is based upon Divine revelation, the other spun from the speculations of men. Unprejudiced thinkers may find God's creative activity revealed in the works of nature, His righteousness in the moral law engraved into the heart of every mortal. And, finally, God is revealed in Scripture as possessing both personality and attributes.

The history of Pentateuchal criticism shows that the importance of the postmosaica has long been widely recognized. On these alone Rabbi Aben Ezra based his doubts of the integrity of the Pentateuch. In the seventeenth century Peyrerius, Spinoza, and Hobbes again advanced only the postmosnica in their attacks on the Pentateuch, although we suspect that they were motivated ultimately by more sinister motives than a desire to find out the truth in these passages of Moses. Clericus goes a step farther and acknowledges the validity of two arguments against the Pentateuch, that of style, as well as the anachronisms. But …

Who is meant in chapter fifty-three? Critics have split into many camps. Some hold that Isaiah is speaking of all Israel; some, that he designates only the pious in Israel; while certain ones hold that the prophet is speaking of some individual. The Christian Church has, however, from the very beginning held that Isaiah is speaking of the Messiah. And that this is the true interpretation is pointed out at length in the following chapters. The desire for a large Pan-Protestant union has endeavored to minimize the theological differences between Lutheranism and Calvinism. True, Luther and Calvin had many things in common, e.g., the rejection of Pelagianism and the Roman hierarchical system. But only too often the divergent conceptions of sin and grace, of faith and works, of atonement and justification, of repentance and sanctification, are viewed only as minor differences.

In that delightful book by Arthur Stevens Phelps entitled Speaking in Public we find, among the many scintillating epigrams and pungent sayings, this thought-provoking sentence: "It takes two to make a speech, the man that speaks and the man that listens." And again: ''If a speaker may be 'too full for utterance,' a congregation may be too full for audience." Both of these sayings contain much food for thought, especially for the Lutheran pastor.
