No one who studies the writings of St. Paul for any length of time can fail to note the frequent recurrence of this word and the importance which attaches to a correct understanding of its various shades of meaning. It occurs 149 times in the thirteen letters commonly ascribed to Paul, and, while there is in a study of Paul's conception of ηνε̂υμα a rich supply of material for investigation alike by the philosopher, the philologist, and the theologian, it is in the last field that its greatest value lies. It is remarkable that in the first two chapters of Exodus the expression "the Lord” is not once used. There only "God" is found; cp. the last three verses of chapter 2, where "God" is used five times in quick succession. Due to this notable lack of "the Lord" and the predominance of "God" in Genesis and the first two chapters of Exodus, critics have devised the theory of two authors, the Elohist and the Jahvist, the former in his record using the expression Elohim and the latter Jahweh. It is well that, when the "Pastor's Professional Growth" series was planned by the editors of the Theological Monthly, there was included in it also an article on the minister's professional growth in the study and knowledge of the confessions, both of our Lutheran Church and of other denominations. We state this because since time immemorial there has prevailed in some circles the false and hurtful notion that symbolics makes an extremely tedious study and that, since it is merely a sort of repetition of dogmatics ultimately matters very little whether one knows his Concordia or not.

Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant (Heb. 3:5, 6; 8:6-13; 12:24), set aside the Old Covenant by means of His work of redemption during the thirty-three years of His humiliation (Gal 4:4, 5). In this period He fulfilled the Moral Law by keeping it (Rom. 5:19; 10:4), and by His suffering He freed us from its curse (Gal. 3:13). In this time He also substituted the reality of His atonement for the shadow of the Ceremonial Law and thus made the observance of its ordinances unnecessary (Col. 2:16, 17).

The keeper of the manuscripts in the British Museum, Mr. H. ldris Bell, has announced the more or less recent acquisition, all within the last three years, of still more fragments of Greek papyri relating to the gospels and antedating any of the New Testament manuscripts hitherto known. He described the first of these acquisitions in an article in the London Times of January 23, 1935. Our own American news weekly Time considered this find of new papyri of sufficient newsworthy import to refer to it promptly in its issue of February 4, 1935, and with refreshing accuracy.
