When we speak of the means of grace, we have in mind certain divinely appointed media by which God earnestly desires to, and actually does, offer, convey, and seal to sinners the merits secured for all men by His dear Son, our divine Mediator and Redeemer. That is the Lutheran definition of the means of grace. And concerning this definition there is no doubt or discrepancy among our Lutheran dogmaticians.

When this initial number of the 1939 volume of the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY reaches the reader, it will almost be a century since the Saxon Pilgrim Fathers of the Missouri Synod arrived at their destination - St. Louis. The political, economic, and religious situation which they left behind and that into which they came were about as distressing and bewildering as the one in which we are placed one hundred years later.

The Address to the Pilgrims. "Peter, the apostle of Jesus Christ," etc., 1 Pet.1:1, 2; that means, Jesus through His duly commissioned servant writes this letter to Christians, who have their true home in heaven and so are living as aliens on earth, specifically to Christians of Asia Minor who most probably have received the Gospel, either directly or indirectly, through the Apostle Paul. They live not in an integrated, visible commonwealth as the people of God but are scattered, now here, now there, among a heathen populace.

A second reason why a certain class of theologians charges Luther with teaching predestinarianism in De Servo Arbitrio is because he so emphatically and uncompromisingly teaches the monergism of grace. What these theologians-the synergists mislike more than the "harsh, predestinarian" sayings of Luther is the sola gratia back of them. Because they do not like the sola gratia, they mislike Luther's teaching on election.

A. commissioners to this statement Is the following: "Our commission was unable to accept the statement of the Missouri Synod that the Scriptures are the infallible truth 'also in those parts which treat of historical, geographical, and other secular matters.' We find the words quoted not in accordance with our Lutheran Confessions (see Formula of Concord, Epitome, Introd.) nor with the Scriptures themselves.''
