Most comments from our readers have expressed approval, and we hope that these studies will prove increasingly stimulating. For the next Church Year we are offering texts on the Gospels. We have made the effort to provide texts which have not been treated in the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY or the Concordia Pulpit during the past five years - at least not on that day. On June 23, 1949, the rich and full life of Dr. Theodore Engelder came to a blessed end. We can probably pay him the greatest tribute by enrolling his name with those of his two illustrious predecessors in the chair of Dogmatics at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Walther-Pieper-Engelder were the great dogmaticians who under God were largely instrumental in developing and preserving a Christ- and Bible-centered theology during the first century of our Synod's history (1847-1947, the year of Dr. Engelder's retirement).

The word fable seems incongruous in the study of Bible teaching. Truth and fiction are incompatible categories. This needs to be said especially in our day when much in the Bible is labeled fiction or myth. However, like the parable, the fable is used by the Holy Spirit as a teaching device of truth.

It is not often that this literary genus is used by the sacred writers. Strictly speaking, there is only one more fable in Scripture besides the one under consideration here. It is very short and is found in 2 Kings 14:9.
