Evaluation Of The Rsv On The Basis Of First Peter, Stephen R. Brusco Jr Jun 1954

Evaluation Of The Rsv On The Basis Of First Peter, Stephen R. Brusco Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus it is evident that this version has caused considerable controversy and difference of opinion. Therefore thorough and objective study is needed to determine the adequacy of this version, to ascertain whether it is true and accurate to the spirit of the original Greek text, to see whether it measures up to the claims made for it by the committee and publishers, to investigate whether or not this new 'Version is usable in public worship and private devotions. The present study is an effort in this direction. It is an evaluation of the RSV on the basis of the First …

The Thought Of Stephen Toulmin And Some Theological Reflections, Kenneth Frese Jun 1954

The Thought Of Stephen Toulmin And Some Theological Reflections, Kenneth Frese

Bachelor of Divinity

The five major works of Stephen Edelston Toulmin, currently professor of philosophy at Brandeis University, that will be treated in this paper are "Contemporary Scientific Mythology," An Examination of the Place of Reason in Ethics, Foresight and Understanding, The Philosophy of Science, and The Uses of Argument.? It will be my object to set forth the essentials of Toulmin's thought concerning first science and secondly extra-scientific endeavors, especially theology; to relate some of Mr. Toulmin's conclusions to those of two prominent exponents of "ordinary language" philosophy, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Gilbert Ryle; and finally to look at the work of a …

The Preaching Of The Gospel In Selected Lenten Sermon Series Of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Donald R. Miesner Jun 1954

The Preaching Of The Gospel In Selected Lenten Sermon Series Of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Donald R. Miesner

Bachelor of Divinity

The thrust of this thesis is twofold in essence. It sets out to (1) determine what is contained in the preaching of the Gospel according to the New Testament; and, to (2) determine how Bishop Sheen’s Lenten preaching portrayed that New Testament kerygmatic pattern. The study further reveals that Sheen's Lenten preaching in many instances departs from and/or runs counter to the kerygmatic formulation.

The Babylon Of 1 Peter 5:13, Roy Schroeder Jun 1954

The Babylon Of 1 Peter 5:13, Roy Schroeder

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem discussed in this paper is the second one: Where is Babylon? Three theories have been advanced: “Babylon" is: (1) Rome, (2) Babylon in Mesopotamia, and (3) Babylon on the Nile River in Egypt. Each of these theories is discussed in a separate chapter. The wording of 1 Pet. 5:13 does not make it mandatory to say that Peter was in Babylon, wherever it is, at the time he wrote his first epistle. This is particularly true if the Egyptian theory is accepted. The greetings from the church ·at Babylon could have come through Mark. However, the natural thing …

The Missionary Approach Of The Roman Catholic Church To The American Negro, Lester Messerschmidt Jun 1954

The Missionary Approach Of The Roman Catholic Church To The American Negro, Lester Messerschmidt

Bachelor of Divinity

Study of the mission strategy employed in achieving such a sizeable number of converts and the obstacles overcome in doing so constitutes the purpose of this paper. It is hoped that this study will aid in some small degree to implement our own missionary outreach to the Negro by pointing up missionary techniques and methods which can be profitably adopted or adapted to our own program, since many of the problems encountered by Roman Catholic missionaries must be faced by Lutheran missionaries, too.

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Devil, Lester Zeitler Jun 1954

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Devil, Lester Zeitler

Bachelor of Divinity

It must be kept in mind that this thesis does not propose to relate and discuss in great detail every minute phase of Luther's concept of the devil. Such a study would take several years, for thoughts concerning the devil permeated nearly every area of Luther's writings. The St. Louis edition of Luther's Works devotes nearly twenty-two columns to an index registering Luther's comments on the devil. This thesis then may be more properly called a general overview of Luther's demonology.

Dr Norman Vincent Peale's Concept Of Faith, Ronald G. Goerss

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of' this thesis is to examine the concept of faith as it is presented in the writings of Dr. Norman v. Peale. This chapter will include a critique of Dr. Peale's concept of faith. An Analysis And Survey Of The Theology Of American Lutheranism Based Upon The Definite Platform Of Samuel Simon Schmucker, Norbert H. Mueller Jun 1954

An Analysis And Survey Of The Theology Of American Lutheranism Based Upon The Definite Platform Of Samuel Simon Schmucker, Norbert H. Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this paper is to attempt to show the source of the theology of the movement, "American Lutheranism." Beyond that it does not pretend to make an exhaustive study of the field or related fields. It does show two things, however: first, that crossing denominational lines for fellowship involves a compromise with your own theology, often the sacrifice of truth on your part; second, that the theology of the movement was thoroughly Reformed and not Lutheran at all as Schmucker insisted it was. The paper further does ·not purpose to criticize unjustly, either Schmucker or the movement, but …

God In The Moderen Novel With Special Reference To The Young Christian Reader, Walter Riess Jun 1954

God In The Moderen Novel With Special Reference To The Young Christian Reader, Walter Riess

Bachelor of Divinity

The modern novel carries a potent message. The Church ought make no mistake about that. The time for ignoring the novelist and his novel is over. We shall either or find a means to deal with the novel, or we shall let our Church suffer from it. But we shall not ignore it longer. The baby has grown far beyond expected proportion, and the church has a problem on her hands.

The youth of the Church are not, of course, the only ones involved in this problem. But it.is the contention of the writer that they are the most susceptible …

The Relationship Between The Concept Of Charis And Santification In The Epistles Of Paul, Harold W. Scheibert Jun 1954

The Relationship Between The Concept Of Charis And Santification In The Epistles Of Paul, Harold W. Scheibert

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is an attempt to find the correct New Testament relationship between this great indicative and this great imperative on the basis of St. Paul’s use of the Greek term, χάρις.

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller Jun 1954

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

Winning people for Christ includes, necessarily, these two main emphases: namely, evangelism and Christian Education. Those are the two emphases used both by the apostles and by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod of our own day. To these two emphases must be added that of youth work in general. Thus, this study forms a synthesis of Christian education, evangelism, and youth work, and it is an attempt at outlining a program which will best answer the question, "How can the Church win the unchurched youth for Christ?"

Tertullian--His Life And Theology, Elmer Hethke Jun 1954

Tertullian--His Life And Theology, Elmer Hethke

Bachelor of Divinity

With these considerations in minds we are ready to embark upon our study of his life and theology. First, this paper will consider his life and work as it affected the people of his day, his dealings with the heresies of his day, and his own heretical views. Then this paper will consider his theology, which will be done by a survey of the various loci in systematic theology.

The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen Jun 1954

The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the writer, as he began this study, to determine upon the basis of 11:1 what the concept of faith according to Hebrews actually is. However, upon a study of the Epistle itself, we have come to the conclusion that this verse neither defines nor describes faith. Rather it sets forth the only way in which it is possible to have a firm foundation for hope. It makes the assertion that it is by faith that one can have a basis and foundation for eschatological blessings, and certainty in the unseen spiritual realm.

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms Jun 1954

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of preaching, the full record of which remains to be written, will also prove to conform to the above assertion about history in general. Its course corresponds, however, to a masked degree with that of general and ecclesiastical history. The outward events with which church history deals are often reflected in preaching; it bears the impress of the various forms of thought known to us as philosophies; the prevailing heresies affect it, either in the way of a traction or repulsion.

Some Scriptural Aspects Of Processes In Nature, August C. Rehwaldt Jun 1954

Some Scriptural Aspects Of Processes In Nature, August C. Rehwaldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Nature is like a veil. It both reveals and conceals the truth. What William Taylor says of the parable may also be applied to nature: " ... a cloud luminous to some, yet dark to others; the enveilment, but also the unveiling, of the truth to men." If nature appeals only to our intellect, we shall see only that which lies on the surface.

In Perils In The Pulpit, Rudolph Norden Jun 1954

In Perils In The Pulpit, Rudolph Norden

Concordia Theological Monthly

Offhand, a person would consider the pulpit one of the safest places on earth. The sanctuary audience seated around this listening post is well behaved and for the most part friendly to the pulpit's occupant. No projectiles indicating forceful disapproval will be hurled. In this respect there is a difference between the church and the public forum. In the latter controversial questions in politics or labor relations are often discussed more in the heat than the light of intense feeling. Emotion, more frequently than thought, becomes father to ill-advised deeds, such as giving flight to overripe vegetables, empty beverage bottles, …

Did Luther Teach That Christ Committed Adultery?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Jun 1954

Did Luther Teach That Christ Committed Adultery?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

As every paster discovers, Roman Catholic ignorance - clerical hardly less than lay-of Lutheran and Luther's theology is often abysmal.

Something of a new nadir, however, was achieved by the Rev. Richard Ginder in the Roman Catholic weekly, Our Sunday Visitor, Vol.XLII, No.44, February 28, 1954, page 12, when he wrote: "Did Martin Luther believe that Jesus was God?

"In his Table Talk,' Weimar edition, ii, 107, one reads the following hair-raising blasphemy: 'Christ committed adultery first of all with the woman at the well about whom St. John tells us. Was not everybody about Him saying: "Whatever has He …

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs Jun 1954

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs

Bachelor of Divinity

One cannot properly appreciate Baierlein's contributions unless one understands what has been accomplished before the missionary’s arrival. Thus, besides sketching his biography, the thesis will also discuss the early Christian missions among the Chippewa Indians in Michigan and the missionary activities in India before Baierlein's arrival. Particular emphasis will be devoted to Lutheran mission work in these countries.

Luther’S Preaching Of Good Works, Robert Heckmann Jun 1954

Luther’S Preaching Of Good Works, Robert Heckmann

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to examine Luther's preaching of good works and evaluate his work somewhat on the basis of the standard layed down in the next section. It will include a short study of his preaching style and habits in general, an examination of his definition of good works and his description and use of the power of the Gospel to enable the people to live the life in Christ.

The Wycliffite And Lutheran Element In The English Reformation, Walter M. Schoedel Jun 1954

The Wycliffite And Lutheran Element In The English Reformation, Walter M. Schoedel

Bachelor of Divinity

The period which this thesis discusses is one of the most important periods in English History. The years 1300 to 1550 show to the world why the Church of England is no longer a member of the Roman Church, This thesis endeavors to show how the teachings and works of John Wycliffe in the 14th century help lay the foundation and groundwork for the real beginning of the Reformation in England in the 16th century, and how the Lutheran element from the continent fits into the scheme of events during the early years of the English Reformation. Again we have …

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : A Look At Paul’S Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern Jun 1954

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : A Look At Paul’S Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern

Bachelor of Divinity

This, then, is the purpose of this study: to look more closely at what scholars in many fields have had to say regarding the matter of human language and its ability to make religious assertions. In an attempt to define this purpose more accurately, it will be necessary to: (a) examine the field of contemporary Linguistic Analysis in light of its historical setting;(b) describe the relationship between the phenomenology of language and religious language; (c) consider the work being done presently in the area of modern linguistic studies in biblical research and see its effect upon the formation of theological …

The Latin Office Hymns In The Lutheran Hymnal, John Lemkul Jun 1954

The Latin Office Hymns In The Lutheran Hymnal, John Lemkul

Bachelor of Divinity

A study of hymns of the Church is most interesting and rewarding to both the historian and the theologian. Hymns reflect the theology of the Church as well as special emphases introduced by theological controversies.

Problems Of Administration In A Downtown Church, Harley Meyer Jun 1954

Problems Of Administration In A Downtown Church, Harley Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is the outgrowth of a vicarage year in Concordia Lutheran Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. This congregation is situated in a run-down area in the heart of the city and has many problems which are unique to a congregation in this situation, as well as many normal problems which are heightened by the downtown situation.

The intent of this thesis is to outline the many problems which exist, on the basis of personal experience and of the limited written material extant from 1933 to the present date. Possible solutions have been included inasmuch as they have been offered in …

A Study Of Hindu Eschatology, Kenneth W. Behnken Jun 1954

A Study Of Hindu Eschatology, Kenneth W. Behnken

Bachelor of Divinity

The eschatological emphasis as it is found in Christianity and its implications for the believer help to make Christianity the unique religion that it is. As God's revelation of Himself. to mankind, Christianity preaches an eternity with God, an eternity of certainty and hope. In contrast with some of the religions developed by man's philosophical invention, it speaks with certainty of the fact, of eternal life with God; in contrast with others it offers a living hope of an existence the marks of which are individuality, purpose, and bliss. It is in the latter category that the Hindu religion stands …

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman Jun 1954

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between Luther and this disparate radical element of the reformation. For this purpose we must distinguish between two aspects of the Radical Movement. Luther was forced to relate himself to Evangelical Radicalism as a historical phenomenon. This aspect of the relationship will be discussed in Chapter II of the thesis. Of greater importance is the theological relationship between Luther and Radicalism. Here we are concerned with a tendency rather than with a Historical group. While this tendency found expression in a historical group, it was also present in some of …
