Luther's Theology Of The Holy Spirit In His Sermons Of John 14, 15, 16, Gerhard Galchutt

This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier Jun 1959

This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper aims to indicate the importance of the background against which our Lord instituted the Sacrament of His Body and His Blood for a proper understanding of the meaning and intention of the words "This do in remembrance of Me." A formulation or approach to a doctrine of the Lord's Supper which proposes to be Biblical cannot be content merely to reiterate the Verba Testamenti in a conflated form and then propose to have exhausted the meaning of "this do". Nor can a formulation which all but ignores the total Sitz im Leben of the scriptural records fail to …

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin Jun 1959

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.

The Medieval Sequence And Troupe, John Lemkul Jun 1959

The Medieval Sequence And Troupe, John Lemkul

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis primarily is an historical research into the origin and development of. the sequence and the trope. From the Table or Contents it may appear that the order of the chapters is a little unusual, for one usually expects an historical account to be presented in chronological order. But because of what we know and what we do not know about the sequence and trope, the outline of the paper begins with the known and proceeds to the unknown. That is why both the sections on the sequence and the trope begin at the Abbey of St. Gall …

Children And The Church's Worship, George Hoyer Jun 1959

Children And The Church's Worship, George Hoyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The burden of the thesis will be to ask how these Christians who are not adults can be helped to receive the grace of the Word of God; how they can be helped to respond to Him in worshiping words that will be a prelude to a worshiping life; and how they can learn to recognize their worshiping brethren in the family of God; ultimately how they can learn to do this applying of the Word from Sacrament and Scripture, this replying of worship and, this supplying of edification in the Church's corporate worship and in the Church's Eucharistic service.

Fifteen Fifty-Nine Anno Domini, Carl S. Meyer May 1959

Fifteen Fifty-Nine Anno Domini, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The confluence of significant events in 1559 A. D. makes that year a notable one in church history. From time to time a half dozen or a baker's dozen of occurrences within the 12-month span alloted by the calendar to a single year may loom up so large that they are regarded as particularly significant and make the year a memorable one in the annals of mankind. Such was the year 1559.

The Pope's Council, Lewis W. Spitz May 1959

The Pope's Council, Lewis W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pope John XXIII is calling an ecumenical council-a wise move on his part. Ecumenicity is popular. People are talking about it. The pope's council will claim its share of the conversation. Rome never misses a chance for favorable publicity. In this case it is spiced with the prospect of others, besides Roman Catholics, being invited. Who will it be? No matter, the pope's council will not, and cannot, be a free council, for at best the erring children of the non-Roman churches can be invited to return to the bosom of the mother church.

Pius Xii, A Roman From Rome, Walter G. Tillmanns

Concordia Theological Monthly

"E Romano di Roma," he is a Roman from Rome, the joyful multitudes shouted. For the first time in over 200 years a native Roman had been elected Bishop of Rome. The time was 5:30 P. M., the day March 2, 1939, the 63d birthday of Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli.

Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann May 1959

Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In our day there is nothing sensational in the remark that the authors of our New Testament documents often quote the Septuagint version rather than the Hebrew text in their use of the Old Testament. In fact, as long ago as 1782 Randolph came to the conclusion that 119 of the 239 actual quotations from the Old Testament occurring in the New were taken from the Septuagint. This was almost 50 years before Doepke's Hermeneutik der neutestamentlichen Schriftsteller ( 1829) clearly demonstrated the extensive methodological agreements between New Testament authors and rabbinic writers, thereby laying the groundwork for our contemporary …

Aids To Bible Study: The Septuagint-Its History, Frederick W. Danker Apr 1959

Aids To Bible Study: The Septuagint-Its History, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Gentlemen, have you a Septuagint?" Ferdinand Hitzig, eminent Biblical critic and Hebraist, used to say to his class. "If not, sell all you have, and buy a Septuagint." Current Biblical studies reflect the accuracy of his judgment. This and the next installment are therefore dedicated to the task of helping the Septuagint come alive for Biblical students who may be neglecting its contributions to the total theological picture, for clergymen who have forgotten its interpretive possibilities, and for all who have just begun to see how new things can be brought out of old.

Faith Healing: A Discussion, Edward J. Mahnke Apr 1959

Faith Healing: A Discussion, Edward J. Mahnke

Concordia Theological Monthly

Is it right to promise health or material advantage to people who practice a religious life? This question is basic to the considerations involved in the practice of faith healing.

Man threatened by foreign powers, missiles, disaster plans. evacuation routes, tossed back and forward by doctrines of every kind, finds himself shaken. He is uncertain about God. He needs health and money to maintain control of his life and future. In Deut. 8:17, 18 the Lord insists that He is the source of all goodness. But He also warns man not to think of God as a resource by which …

Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer Apr 1959

Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Two customs of thought have tended to erect, if not a barrier, at least a filter between theology and Christian life.

The one is the hoary distinction between the "doctrinal" and the "practical" portions of the epistles - as though the apostles were "teaching" less strenuously when they were shaping the life and behavior of their readers than when they were discussing their faith. The other is the theologically more recent distinction between kerygma and didache and the assumption that when a preacher wants to save people, he tells them about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; when he …

Luther And Sanctification, Philip S. Watson Apr 1959

Luther And Sanctification, Philip S. Watson

Concordia Theological Monthly

In a volume of sermons which he published in 1788, John Wesley took occasion to repeat a criticism of Luther that he had first made after reading his commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians many years before. "It has frequently been observed," he says, "that very few were clear in their judgment both with regard to justification and sanctification"; and he cites Luther as an example. "Who," he asks, "has wrote more ably than Martin Luther on justification by faith alone? And who was more ignorant of the doctrine of sanctification, or more confused in his conceptions of it?" …

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen Mar 1959

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

To assert that philosophy and theology are not identical would obviously be unnecessary in addressing myself to the present group; but to remind you that there are vast areas of common interest shared by these two disciplines is probably not superfluous. Living as we do in a time when reason is often ridiculed and up-to-the- minute theologians present highly rationalized arguments in favor of antirational views, we need to remind ourselves that philosophy is inescapable. The moment we reflect critically upon our experiences and beliefs, we begin to philosophize.

What Luther Says: A Review, Theodore Hoyer Mar 1959

What Luther Says: A Review, Theodore Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The last 80 years have seen a great revival of interest in Reformation history and as a result an ever-increasing research in the facts of those times. Its beginning came with the preparations for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Luther's birth in 1883. More especially, however, this new Luther and Reformation research was launched by those who were opposed to Luther and to Protestantism in general. They knew what this celebration would initiate: literature describing, defending, promoting Protestant interests. In order to meet and to stop this, they did-the very best they could to promote it!
