Christian theologians of the younger churches in Asia have complained, perhaps facetiously, perhaps seriously, that they have not yet produced a serious indigenous heresy. Behind this is the realization that Christianity is still largely a foreign, an imported, religion for most people of Asia. Christians gather in buildings of foreign architecture, sing unfamiliar melodies, and hear the Gospel preached in strangely foreign thought patterns. Their concern is not merely nationalistic but also evangelical They want the Gospel to be meaningful and relevant also in Asia.

This thesis will chiefly attempt to demonstrate the activity of Friedrich Ausust Brunn, Jr., particularly between 1846 and 1876. Brunn was the major representative of the Free Church in the State of Nassau. He was also an important progenitor of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Saxony and Other States. Furthermore, Brunn supplied over 200 teacher and ministerial candidates for the Missouri Synod between 1861 and 1878.

The thesis of this paper is that at Corinth Paul did take over some of the thought patterns and vocabulary of an incipient Gnosticism with Judaic overtones. But instead of being influenced theologically by the borrowed terms, he used them for his consistent preaching of the crucified Savior, the true Wisdom of God. He was well aware of the uniqueness of the religion he preached; its real source lay not in the current thought forms of either Judaism or Hellenism, but in the Person, 'Preaching and redemptive work of the crucified Son of God.

A Comparison Of The Ethics Of The Qumran Scrolls And The Epistle Of James, Warren Schmidt

There are several reasons why one would expect to find similarities to the Scrolls in James. The latter is clearly a Palestinian document written for Jewish readers. It is probably the earliest of the New Testament books written during the formative years of the church. This is a time when the church would be more open to outside influences in matters such as organization and polity. The early dating of James has been accepted by many scholars since the study of Gerhard Kittel, who dates it in the fourth decade of the first century, immediately before Paul's first missionary journey.

Not only was it "Dr. Pieper's legacy of sound Scriptural teaching," but it was also, so it was maintained with evident exaggeration, the testimony of "a confessional unity of mind and heart embracing every pastor and congregation and enduring the test of searching examination by the 'norma normans' of Holy Scripture."

1861- The outbreak of the Civil War temporarily disrupts the work at Concordia College. Luther College is opened at Halfway Creek, Wisconsin.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah present an account of the history of the Judean people from the time of the Exile until the transition to Judaism was well on its way. Cyrus, king of Persia, in his first regnal year issued a decree permitting the Judean exiles to return to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4). Sheshbazzar, a Judean prince (Ezra 1:8), led the first group of returnees and rebuilt the altar. The temple was begun in the following year (Ezra 5:16), but opposition by the people of the land delayed the project for about fifteen years.
