C. F. W. Walther (1811-1887), the premier theologian of the Missouri Synod, was a dogmatician who relied heavily on the writers of Lutheran Orthodoxy of the 16th and 17th century. He made little use of the historical-exegetical method. Because the writer has been personally involved with neo-Pentecostals in the charismatic movement, this thesis was undertaken in an attempt to understand that movement in terms of its history. Such history cannot yet be written. At the same time, traditional Pentecostalism has had a strong influence on the charismatic movement. Apart from the fact that the charismatic movement is much less institutionalized than the older Pentecostalism, there is no essential normative difference between the two. A thorough understanding of the latter contributes material to an understanding of the former.

This study of the epistle of James arose out of a pastoral concern that members of the Christian community live their Christian discipleship. James is marked by its vigorous concern for Christians living a godly life; at the same time it raises a problem. The problem is that there is no motive immediately evident with which James encourages its readers to godly living--certainly nothing as evident as "by the mercies of God" (Rom. 12:1) or "if God so loved us" (1 John 4:11). The purpose of this study is to discover what the epistle's motive for Christian living is.

This article was delivered in substantially this form at the Episcopal-Lutheran dialog on April 15, 1971, together with the one by Dr. Carl S. Meyer. Dr. Fuller surveys the evidence of the New Testament and concludes that the historic episcopate belongs to the essential marks of the church in the same way that the authoritative, historical canon of the Word does.

If one were to adhere to the popular myth about Thomas Müntzer, one might expect few or only negative results of a study devoted to Müntzer's use of Scripture. The legend begun by Müntzer's enemies and perpetuated over the centuries is that Müntzer had little use for Scripture and relied mainly on dreams and personal inspiration for his source of divine revelation. This view receives its most extreme formulation among general historians or scholars in tangential fields who rely on secondary literature. It has been noted that Clement of Alexandria (ca. 150-215 A. D.) diverges sharply from primitive Christianity in important respects, such as his views on eschatology and the significance of the Law. It is my contention that Clement also diverges from almost the entire previous Christian tradition as far as we know it in the matter of ethics, in that he places individual perfection above communal concerns such as love and justice.

The Lutheran World Federation's Commission on Church Cooperation sponsored an international consultation in Tokyo with some 150 people, from April 29 to May 4, 1971, under the theme "The Role of Lutheranism in an Ecumenical Age." It was the first sizeable gathering of such a nature since the recent restructuring of the Lutheran World Federation at its Evian Assembly in 1970. That it was held in Asia was also noteworthy.
