Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article uses ecofeminism to study the status of women in French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking African countries. Taking Mongo Beti’s character, Perpetua, as an archetype, it demonstrates that women are subjected to a twofold domination that associates them with nature. Since the ideology of capitalism and progress that underlies African modernity views nature as dead matters to be conquered and exploited, it also rationalizes the oppression of women. Indeed, the reification of nature results in the social representation of women’s body as the repressible Other, a production tool and as exploitable resources.

The writer and activist Mongo Beti upon his return in 1991 to his homeland in Cameroon, worked with the farmers, crushed by the political system. As he recalls in his novel Ville cruelle, colonial prerogatives have impacted urban planning and the environment. In regards to the numerous ecological disasters, the philosopher Fabien Eboussi Boulaga recalls the communities’ ancient approaches. Currently are such concerns being further tackled in Cameroon ? The suffering of the black body has reclaimed center-stage in the media galaxy thanks to the Black Lives Matter phenomenon, a movement that lives on social media. In this contribution, I argue that despite its ephemeral nature, Black Lives Matter proceeds from a long tradition of black activism. Locating the current reincarnation of the long struggle for black human rights leads us to the trope of metaphors of slavery that captures the materiality of the black suffering body. Although the importance of history in Mongo Beti’s work is well established, research is less prolific on the vision that this Cameroonian writer had of the future of the African people. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. Decoloniality is a concept coined by Walter Mignolo to fight against the invasion of the euro-American imaginary in the rest of the world that Anibal Quijano calls coloniality. Thus designed by the Modernity/Coloniality/Decoloniality research group to answer the vast question raised by globalization to the universal consciousness ; questioning centered on the conditions for re-socialization and a new humanization, the theory of decoloniality is determined as a philosophy of liberation based on epistemic disobedience. This article offers a reading of the status and image of women in the postcolonial context of Africa through Branle-bas en noir et blanc and Perpétue et l’habitude du malheur by iconoclastic writer Mongo Beti. The female figures of his novels allow him to decry the conditions in which women are forced to live, between colonial, patriarchal, matriarchal and religious subjugation. Marilynne Robinson’S Housekeeping Read Through The Conceptual Prism Of “Tethers”, Sarah Street

The Criterion

Marilynne Robinson’s novel, Housekeeping, follows her central protagonist, Ruth, her sister Lucille, and her aunt Sylvie as they work to establish their place up against a greater surround. This paper attempts to read the novel through the conceptual prism of the word “tethers.” I argue that the characters' relationships with the surround shifts as they work through their trauma and grapple with the notion of impermanence by reconciling with both those things that tether them, those tethers that do not exist or have been released, and the tethers from which they want to break free. Gawain, Women, And The Hunts: How The Body Influences Human-Animal Relationships In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Meghan Gavis

The Criterion

In the narrative poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, women and animals appear, on the surface, to function in a quintessential medieval sense — as physical objects to bolster Sir Gawain’s chivalric image. However, the dynamics between women, animals, and Gawain in this text challenge the human hierarchy presented by other medieval standards. By reading the ritualized hunts as devolving in honorable attention to the animal body and mapping their language onto the Lady’s temptations in Gawain’s bedroom, a feminine reclamation of the body appears.
