Monde Étrange/Étranger-Monde : Chant D'Une Heureuse Fragilité Dans Cacophonie De Ken Bugul, Anaïs Metoukson

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This paper analyzes the psychological vulnerability of a wandering and traumatized feminine character in Ken Bugul's novel Cacophonie. It is argued that vulnerability, presented both as a creative and destructive force, is conveyed using an aesthetic of strangeness. Disturbances accumulate on the figurative, event and semantic levels, maintaining an hesitation between supernatural and natural explanations of the narrative process. However, those same troubles also allow a diving into the pain of a lonely spirit. Ultimately, this psychic maze offers a breakaway, given as a consented and redefined fragility. Both born in Port-au-Prince in 1953, the capital of a half-island prone to natural disasters and marked by lasting international isolation, the writers Dany Laferrière and Yanick Lahens have drawn mirrored narrative modes from the fortunes and misfortunes of the Haitian insularity. We will first discuss the chiasmus that can be noted between Douces déroutes (2018) by Yanick Lahens, who has never left her country, and Chronique de la dérive douce (1994) by Dany Laferrière who was deeply marked by his departure for Montreal in 1976. Matrons, Mothers, And Monsters: The Heroine In Beowulf, Grendel, And The Mere Wife, Grace Lucier

College Honors Program

This thesis examines the relationship between gender and heroism in the Beowulf tale and two of its modern retellings. It includes an exploration of the medieval gender roles of the original epic using Seamus Heaney and E. Talbot Donaldson’s translations. This thesis also addresses the ways in which some characters disturb gender binaries and social roles — especially in the case of Grendel’s mother. The second and third chapters focus on two retellings of the Beowulf text respectively: John Gardner’s Grendel , told from the perspective of the monster Grendel; and Maria Dahvana Headley’s The Mere Wife , which is …

Verbal Agency In The Speech Of Cremutius Cordus (Tacitus Annals 4.34-5), Daniel Libatique

New England Classical Journal

This article analyzes the agency (or lack thereof) in the verbs of the speech of Cremutius Cordus at Tacitus Annals 4.34-5. Cordus divests himself of agency in order to grant it to written works of literature, which can carry an author’s legacy and authority into posterity even if the author himself is punished with death. By their very existence, such works, imbued with agency and power by their authors, stymie the efforts of book-burners and the authors’ enemies to efface cultural memory.

The Poetry Of History: Irish National Imagination Through Mythology And Materiality, Ryan Fay

The thesis culminates in the twentieth century and yet it begins with the Ulster Cycle, a period of Irish mythological history that occurred around the first century common era. Indeed, since the time frame was before the arrival of the Gaels, Normans, or Christianity, the extent of this mythology’s relevance today is whatever extent it is conceptualized as “Irish.” As such, the first chapter locks onto an aspect that could feasibly transcend time and resonate with modern Irish society: gender. This thesis centers on the interrelationships and differences in firearm legislation and culture within the United States of America and Australia. As a result of the Port Arthur Massacre on April 28, 1996, Australia was faced with an unprecedented mass shooting that completely shifted Australian politics and culture regarding firearm safety and availability. Thus, the thesis inquiries into the effectiveness of Australia’s buyback program as well as the cultural and political factors that allowed for such legislation to be passed.
