In recent decades, the world has seen an overall decrease in participation and programs for Latin and ancient Greek language studies in favor of modern languages with more of a “practical” application. This essay means to assert the continued relevance of classical language studies whilst simultaneously acknowledging and exploring the socio-economic barriers facing potential learners. The prevalence of Latin and ancient Greek in English and other Romance languages and the academic advantage associated with learning the languages makes an argument for their modern purpose. However, issues of classism and elitism are intertwined with the learning of classical languages in academia. …

Flaws in scientific reasoning and inconsistencies among sources are discussed, and taken into consideration when determining a carbon tax’s efficacy. Driven by logic, these sources are put under the microscope to ultimately determine how beneficial a carbon tax would be without skewed opinions shaping its conclusion. …

For my project in Honors English Composition II, I researched, designed, and presented a program about the human invention of writing to an English as a Second Language class. My presentation focused on the moment of transition from Sumerian clay envelopes and tokens to cuneiform tablets. Instead of placing tokens inside, each participant wrote a message to themselves on a piece of pa per and sealed them inside. The recreations serve as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the unique human achievement of …

Fast-fashion brands are taking over the clothing market with their highly affordable and trendy products. A constant supply of new items is being produced to satisfy the demands of trends and micro-trends worldwide. Although these practices are convenient for the consumer, they adversely affect the environment. The large number of products being produced for short-term trends results in an abundance of discarded clothing and accessories in landfills. The story of a mass shooting occurring on the place of school seems to be a common one in the contemporary American cultural narrative. One of the more controversial solutions offered within this narrative is allowing citizens to protect themselves through the practice of conceal and carry. This qualitative research study employs a dramaturgical narrative approach to explore the daily lives of full-time community college faculty members. In …

Heidegger On The “Futural” Poet Rilke Poetizing The Essential Truth Of Being?, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
This essay poses and responds uniquely to the following crucial questions: Does Rilke’s poetry poetize the event of Being for Dasein? Does Rilke indicate that the human being can yet achieve such a mode of “historical” existence in relation to the Earth or the holy? Heidegger responds to the first query in the affirmative; Rilke does poetize this event, albeit through a “tempered” and somewhat traditional view of Western metaphysics. To the second query, it appears that Heidegger responds in a slightly cryptic and ambiguous manner, and to clarify this response, I turn to Heidegger’s interpretation of Rilke’s “Angel” as …

For this paper, I talked about how directors John Ford and Howard Hawks impacted the acting career of legendary actor John Wayne. I discuss how Wayne rose to prominence in Ford's film Stagecoach in 1939, but how Hawks was the one to take his acting to another level by giving his characters more depth. Ford and Hawks essentially "talked" amongst each other through Wayne and made him into this greater idea with their westerns.
