Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Each of the standard works was compiled from previous historical documents. The Bible emerged from letters and writings selected and evaluated over hundreds of years. Joseph Smith received revelations for more than a decade before some were published in the Doctrine and Covenants. Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles selected some of Joseph Smith’s other writings for inclusion in the Pearl of Great Price. Mormon and Moroni abridged Nephite records to prepare the plates that Joseph Smith translated as the Book of Mormon.
Feeling God's Love, Lindon J. Robison
Feeling God's Love, Lindon J. Robison
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Some of my family and friends have separated themselves from the gospel. Their reasons vary. However, they often share a common concern: if God loves all his children, all the time, everywhere, and no matter what—why can’t I feel it? In response to this question, I wrote this essay. In doing so, I found President Russell M. Nelson’s conference talk on divine love to be an important resource. President Nelson states that “while divine love can be called perfect, infinite, enduring, and universal, it cannot correctly be characterized as unconditional.” In grappling with the concept of conditional love and …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Historical claims about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are repeatedly shared in classrooms, conversations, books, manuals, videos, podcasts, and online in a variety of ways. There is no shortage of information about the history of the Restoration. When you learn about Church history from these various sources, however, how do you know which claims to accept and which to question? Are all perspectives about Church history accurate and trustworthy? And, if all historical sources are not of the same value and veracity, what guidelines can be used to differentiate them?

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
On 12 February 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the second volume in the Saints series. Subtitled No Unhallowed Hand, this volume begins with the Latter-day Saints leaving Nauvoo, Illinois, in early 1846, shortly after thousands of Church members received their endowments in the partially completed Nauvoo Temple. It tells the story of the settlement of territorial Utah and the surrounding areas; the expansion of missionary work around the globe, with a particular emphasis on Europe and the Pacific; the gathering of Saints to the American West; the lived reality of plural marriage and the national …
Being Divine Or Devilish: Which Is The Destroyer Riding Upon The Waters?, Seth N. Hord
Being Divine Or Devilish: Which Is The Destroyer Riding Upon The Waters?, Seth N. Hord
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
As Joseph Smith and several elders traveled from Missouri to Ohio, a series of events occurred that led some of the early Saints to be wary of traveling by water. The journey of Joseph and the elders started uneventfully as they traveled by canoe up the Missouri River, but by the third day contention and hard feelings developed within the group. At a particularly difficult stretch of the river, one of the canoes reportedly hit a hazard in the water (an uprooted tree called a sawyer) and nearly capsized. The group was frightened and made camp on the bank of …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The Church Board of Education’s 2019 “Guidelines for Strengthening Religious Education” include this new language among the “purposes” of religious education—to “strengthen [students’] ability to find answers, resolve doubts, respond with faith, and give reason for the hope within them in whatever challenges they may face.”

Why She Ran: Hebrew Bible Well Symbolism In The Protevangelium Of James 11.1–4, Rachel Huntsman
Why She Ran: Hebrew Bible Well Symbolism In The Protevangelium Of James 11.1–4, Rachel Huntsman
Studia Antiqua
There are aspects of the annunciation scene—as portrayed in the Protevangelium of James—which have not yet been examined by modern scholars. These issues are important when relating to the history of well symbolism in the Hebrew Bible, which symbolism continued in force through the Second Temple period. This paper examines the symbolism of wells, fertility, and marriage and how the author of the Protevangelium of James consciously knew about this symbolism and wrote his narrative in a way that distanced Mary, the mother of Jesus, from any ideas saying that she was less than virginal.
Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau
Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau
Studia Antiqua
The presence of Jewish themes and allusions in the Gospel of John has received much scholarly attention in recent decades. This study follows this trend, exploring several possible connections between the Day of Atonement and the Johannine narrative. In this paper, I argue that these connections—which include John the Baptist’s identification of Jesus with the Lamb of God, echoes of the scapegoat ritual, high-priest-like prayers, and the repeated use of the phrase egō eimi—were deliberately incorporated into the narrative by the author of John as pointed allusions to the Day of Atonement. For the original audience, as well as …
Raised Hands In Prayer As An Inducement Motif In The Psalms, Kelsie Cannon
Raised Hands In Prayer As An Inducement Motif In The Psalms, Kelsie Cannon
Studia Antiqua
Two hands raised in the air is a commonly portrayed gesture in the Hebrew Bible and broader ancient Near East. Synthesizing previous research done on the same topic, this paper will strive to examine the gesture in order to show that its purpose is to induce and elicit divine favor from a superior being—typically a deity or king-like figure. The conclusion will be reached by first generally surveying the raised hands motif in the Hebrew Bible and then specifically examining the gesture in Psalms. This study will be complemented by exploring relevant extrabiblical textual and iconographic evidence within the ancient …
Symbolism Of Temple Gates In Ancient Israel, Talitha Hart
Symbolism Of Temple Gates In Ancient Israel, Talitha Hart
Studia Antiqua
The gates of the city and the temple establish boundaries between inner and outer space, while also allowing access to an area that is clearly separated from its surroundings. Throughout ancient Israel, the city gate was seen as representing economic activity, belonging, justice, and strength. I would argue that the gate of the temple represented many of the same things and was seen in a similar way. I have decided to include the tabernacle, as well as both Solomon’s and Herod’s temples, in this analysis, as they seem to have been seen in a similar light even if they were …
Covenant Peoples, Covenant Journeys: Archetypal Similarities Between The Noah, Abraham, And Moses Narratives, Jeremy Madsen
Covenant Peoples, Covenant Journeys: Archetypal Similarities Between The Noah, Abraham, And Moses Narratives, Jeremy Madsen
Studia Antiqua
The stories of Noah, Abraham, and Moses display remarkable similarities. All three follow a narrative pattern where God appears in theophany to a prophet-patriarch figure, God forms a covenant with this prophet-patriarch and his people to bring them to a new land, and God guides them on a divinely-assisted journey until they reach that land. Rather than being the result of typological shaping or historical resemblance, the narrative similarities between these three stories are most likely indicative of a common narrative archetype, which this paper titles the covenant journey archetype. The thrice-fold repetition of this archetype within the Pentateuch attests …

"Making It Real": The Effect Of Hispanic Peer Tutors On High School Spanish Learners, Carrie Dalton Sandholtz
Theses and Dissertations
This mixed methods study investigated the effects of a pilot peer-tutoring program for high school students between L1 Spanish-speaking tutors and Spanish second language (L2) tutees during Fall Semester 2018 (16 weeks). The purpose of this research was to explore the impact the peer-tutoring program had on the language acquisition, motivation to learn, intercultural sensitivity, and number of Spanish-speaking friendships of the L2 Spanish learners. The study consisted of a matched-group comparison and a qualitative exploration of reflective surveys completed by the participants in the pilot program. The experimental group (n=32) received a treatment of 20 minutes of peer tutoring …
Shakespeare's Rebels: The Citizen's Responsibility Toward A Tyrannical Ruler, Rebecca Evans Hansen
Shakespeare's Rebels: The Citizen's Responsibility Toward A Tyrannical Ruler, Rebecca Evans Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the social, political, and religious upheavals occurring across Europe in the Early Modern period, many writers were exploring the proper relationship between citizens and political and religious leaders. While some writers encouraged citizens to give unconditional loyalty to local and national leaders, Shakespeare has a pattern of endorsing citizen rebellion as a moral means to overthrow tyrannical rulers. By exploring Richard III, Measure for Measure, and Julius Caesar, I argue that Shakespeare is developing a taxonomy of citizen responses to a tyrannical leader and teaches citizens that a moral rebellion can be launched against a tyrant when a …

"Strength Both Of Mind And Body": Asylum Reform And The Failure Of Moral Management In Elizabeth Gaskell's "Half A Life-Time Ago", Erica Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
In Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 short story, "Half a Life-Time Ago," Susan Dixon faces a difficult choice regarding her younger brother, who has gone insane after an illness: should she try to care for him at home or commit him to the nearby Lancaster Asylum? Although fictional, Susan's situation highlights an important Victorian debate about the care of the insane and the reformation of public asylums. This debate, and the changes enacted by nineteenth-century asylum reformers as a result of the cultural conversation, brought new attention to the relationship between the mind, the body, and the will as the concept of …
A Look At Coco Chanel, Fashion, And History: An Introduction To And Translation Of La Construcción De La Marca Personal De Coco Chanel A Través De Sus Fotografías, Rilee Andros
Undergraduate Honors Theses
La construcción de la marca personal de Coco Chanel a través de sus fotografías was originally written in Spanish by Inmaculada Urrea Gómez as her PhD dissertation in 2015. This thesis includes a translation of the prologue, introduction to section 1, and section 1.1 of Urrea’s dissertation, preceded by a translator’s introduction. The introduction discusses the content of the translated text, provides insight into the translation process, and defines important terms for the reader. The introduction also explores the ideas of translation theorists Hans Vermeer, Lawrence Venuti, and Anthony Pym, comparing and contrasting their ideas in order to explain why …
Journey Into The Self: Essays On Biculturalism, Heidi Moe Graviet
Journey Into The Self: Essays On Biculturalism, Heidi Moe Graviet
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines what it means to exist as a bicultural being and how one approaches creating and negotiating a multicultural identity in terms of names, war, religion, belonging, and loss. In Narrow Road to the Interior, Matsuo Bashō embarks upon a journey of transcendence and self-discovery into the interior regions of Japan. In doing so, he establishes a Japanese writing tradition that centers around introspective journey-taking and writing oneself into truth and being. This thesis examines, participates in, and expands upon this writing tradition as it follows one Japanese American woman’s attempts to selfhood. Ultimately, it proposes the idea …
