Puritans, Pagans, And Imperfect Christmas Gifts, David F. Holland
Puritans, Pagans, And Imperfect Christmas Gifts, David F. Holland
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Early American campaigns against Christmas illustrate both the irrepressibility of the impulse to celebrate Christ and what is lost when we reject the good that comes from suspect sources. Both lessons point us toward the Savior’s gracious acceptance of our own imperfect offerings.
Mindfulness As Art Education, Self-Inquiry, And Artmaking, Mark Graham, Rebecca Lewis
Mindfulness As Art Education, Self-Inquiry, And Artmaking, Mark Graham, Rebecca Lewis
Faculty Publications
This article presents an overview and continuation of a study investigating how artist awareness and critical response might provide a better understanding of mindfulness and its practice within art education. While there are distinct advantages to mindfulness practices in education, these practices might also have problematic aspects, such as helping people conform to oppressive structures in education rather than questioning them. The pandemic of 2020–2021 accentuated student concerns with social, emotional, and mental health and illuminated possible benefits of mindfulness practice. Results show that preservice art education students used mindfulness and data visualization to connect art and self-inquiry. Important findings …

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
It was past midnight when Dora Barrios and Betty Nuñez Zeiss stumbled upon José Díaz's beaten body--two stab wounds, broken bones, and severe facial damage. The girls alerted the neighbors, who rushed him to the hospital, but to no avail. In the following days, the Los Angeles Times published various articles about the murder of the twenty-two-year-old.

Within Sufi Islam is a musical tradition called Qawwali, which blends Hindustani classical music with Sufi Islamic poetry. Already a bled of multiple religious elements, Qawwali is certainly not orthodox in its worship; nevertheless, it certainly works as a powerful form of religious worship through a combination of Hindu music Sufi poetry. Qawwals (Qawwali musicians) often know poetry in four or more different languages and have experimented with many Hindustani Ragas (musical traditions learned experimented with as musicians studying for a decade or longer).

“A Tyrannical Grace”: Mabel Frazer, The American West, And The Navigation Of A Man’S Space, James R. Swensen

In 1949 the painter Mabel Frazer (1887–1981) applied for, and finally received, promotion to the position of associate professor of art at the University of Utah. Yet, after nearly three decades of diligent service, she witnessed her male peers, often with far fewer bona fides, receive advancement.1 This was the challenge, she acknowledged, of being a “woman in a man’s institution.”2 Throughout her career Frazer repeatedly overcame similar challenges and, by so doing, defied and redefined what it meant to be a female artist in Utah. This essay explores one of the significant ways in which Frazer’s work stretched gendered …

Review; Laughter And Civility: The Theater Of Emma Gad, Susan Brantly
The Bridge
When Emma Gad is remembered in Denmark today, it is as the Danish version of Miss Manners, due to her book Takt og Tone: Hvordan vi omgaas (Tact and Tone: How We Act in Society, 1918), which is apparently still in print. However, as University of Texas, Austin professor Lynn Wilkinson so ably illustrates, Emma Gad was much more than that. Gad was a highly successful playwright and cultural mediator in the Copenhagen of Edvard and Georg Brandes. Wilkinson’s book offers a comprehensive look at the life and work of this important Danish woman playwright and seeks to reinstate Gad …

Prairie Roots Run Deep: A Geologically Grounded History Of Elk Horn, Iowa, Warren Watson

Clay Township is located in the southeast corner of Shelby County, Iowa. It is made up of thirty-six one-mile square sections. The top tier of sections one through six are somewhat larger due to a surveying correction. It was one of the last townships in Shelby County to be settled. The first settlers were drawn to the northeast corner of Shelby County in the late 1840s and early 1850s. Once a Dane got a foothold in Clay Township in the 1860s, the area became populated quickly. It was eventually settled by the largest contingent of Danes in America. This is …

My father’s family comes from a small Danish farming community in Als parish in Jutland, where it was customary for young people to marry the sons and daughters of neighboring farmers. It was a closed community, largely because of a policy known as adscription (restricting peasants to the estate of their birth) that did not allow able-bodied men to leave the parish. This policy was in place for most of the eighteenth century, but in 1788, adscription was abolished. In the same period, the population in Denmark was increasing rapidly, due to, among other things, better hygiene and lower child …
Six Objects From Sned: Remembering The Past On Jens Jensen’S Childhood Farm, J.R. Christianson
Six Objects From Sned: Remembering The Past On Jens Jensen’S Childhood Farm, J.R. Christianson
The Bridge
When Jens Jensen was growing up in Denmark, the past was never very far away. Sometimes it was way too close, like the day one of the great events of Danish history happened right there on their family farm. Jens was only three years old, but it was not something one would forget, even at his age. The day was April 18, 1864, when one of the fiercest battles in Danish history was fought on the hillside where their farm lay. Needless to say, it tore the place apart.
Jutland Goes Global (But Not Haywire): An Autobiographical View Of Danish Business Culture, Poul Houe
Jutland Goes Global (But Not Haywire): An Autobiographical View Of Danish Business Culture, Poul Houe
The Bridge
This essay—or review article, if you will—continues where my presentation at the October 2013 DAHS Conference in Des Moines, Iowa, left off.1 Much like its precursor, the present text is about innovation originating from Thy (and other regions of Jutland), but unlike the earlier piece, which dealt with three innovators ranging from the early to late nineteenth century and from spiritual to material domains of culture, the following discussion will be about more recent achievements by one individual in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Moreover, the window on Danish culture at large—its spiritual dimension and Danishness not least—that …

Review; Cooking Danish: A Taste Of Denmark, David Hendee, Polly Hendee
The Bridge
More than three decades after arriving in America, Danish immigrant and chef Stig Hansen published his first and only cookbook. Cooking Danish: A Taste of Denmark was the self-proclaimed Viking Chef’s gift to his family, his adopted countrymen, and all who love cooking and eating Danish foods. Although out of print since its 2007 publication, after selling out an initial print run of 10,000 copies, the award-winning, English-language cookbook is a staple of many Danish American kitchens. It remains available through the secondhand market.

"We Have Not Been Allowed The Liberty... To Worship As We Please" Nancy Naomi Tracy And The Denial Of Latter-Day Saint Religious Liberty, Derek Sainsbury
Faculty Publications
This article examines the life of Nancy Naomi Tracy as a lens into the Latter-day Saint struggle for religious liberty in nineteenth-century America. Joining the Church in 1834, Tracy endured repeated persecution—from the Missouri expulsions and the 1838 Mormon War to the federal antipolygamy campaigns of the 1880s—yet actively fought for her faith’s constitutional protections. As the only known female electioneer missionary in Joseph Smith’s 1844 presidential campaign, she embodied the Saints’ bold blend of religious conviction and political engagement. Drawing on Tracy’s three personal reminiscences (1880, 1885, and 1896–99), the study explores how her experiences as a wife, mother, …

The Pure Language Project, Dan Belnap, Michael Mackay

In the summer of 1835, Joseph Smith and his associates purchased four mummies and some papyri scrolls from Michael Chandler.1 That summer Joseph would participate in a project that would produce a fascinating set of texts, referred to today as the Egyptian Language Documents (ELD), used and compiled mostly in Kirtland, but also consulted and expanded in Nauvoo.2 These documents, which include three incomplete variants of what was called an “alphabet” as well as an incomplete “grammar,” integrated a series of characters with explanations.

The scriptures consistently depict the significance of sacred space and sacred time in the lives of the Lord’s covenant people. Sacred time is still experienced today, as in the past, through commemorations and celebrations on specific days that are dedicated to God and thus regarded as holy. These days punctuate the passing of ordinary or common time and are intended to help bring focus and clarity to relationships with the divine.

Curiosities Of Street Literature, A Critical Edition, Lauren Maynes, Sydnie Poulsen, Drew Rigby, Sarah Schulzke, Zerin Wetzel, Emi Yamazaki
Student Works
Curiosities of Street Literature, compiled and edited by Charles Hindley, Sr. and published by Reeves and Turner in 1871, is a curiosity in every sense of the word. The volume contains over 200 Victorian broadsides (primarily ballads) reprinted from the cheap Seven Dials versions that flooded the streets of Great Britain before the advent of steam printing. Sold for a penny (or less) by “patterers” who sang the ballads to popular tunes to attract their typically working-class customers, these pieces of ephemera were never meant to be saved or remediated in book format. Street ballads appeared quickly and disappeared …

“Women Who Speak With The Power And Authority Of God”: The Role Of Women In The Northern Indian Mission, 1964-1973, Amber Miller
Student Works
Since the Church's founding in the early 19th century, numerous historians have chronicled the story of "Lamanite" Missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of these Indian Mission histories, however, mention little more about women than missionaries marrying Native women, and non-native women receiving blessings that they will one-day teach the "Lamanites." Although the continuing conversation of these historic missions covers a wide range of views and interpretations, the roles and contributions of women often take a subordinate position in the Indian Mission narrative. The Northern Indian Mission of 1964 to 1973 serves as a microcosm …
Do Esl Students Progress An Entire Actfl Proficiency Sublevel In Both Speaking And Writing Each Semester?, Matthew Salvatore Millar
Do Esl Students Progress An Entire Actfl Proficiency Sublevel In Both Speaking And Writing Each Semester?, Matthew Salvatore Millar
Theses and Dissertations
Many intensive English language students take pretests and posttests at the beginning and end of each semester to determine proficiency gains. Nevertheless, it may not be clear what kinds of gains should be expected over the course of a single semester or how those gains might be influenced by factors such as the learner's first language (L1) or prior proficiency. This study used repeated measures ANOVA and nonparametric tests to examine the speaking and writing pretest and posttest scores of 2331 Novice Mid to Advanced Mid ESL learners over a 15-week semester. Results show that while students on average progressed …

Interpretive Language And Museum Artwork: How Patrons Respond To Depictions Of Native American And White Settler Encounters--A Thematic Analysis, Holli D. Rogerson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to conduct a thematic linguistic analysis of survey responses to museum-quality images depicting various Native American and white settler encounters. The survey asked participants to provide written responses (fill in the blank prompts) to a selection of twelve images composed of photographs and paintings representing one or more of three overarching themes: violence, immersion, and goodwill/collaboration. The research focused on four demographic groups: Latter-day Saints, Native Americans, museum employees, and total participants. Each response was individually analyzed by hand and assigned appropriate classification tags based on the types of words their responses contained including …
Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert
Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
The present study involves the creation and analysis of a corpus containing 7747 samples of timed, pre-matriculated L2 English writing from an IEP. The focus of the analysis is on three phrasal complexity measures with time and proficiency as fixed effects, examining their impact on each measure. Results of the analysis suggest that this is true for some phrasal measures, such as nominalizations and attributive adjectives, while others, such as noun-noun phrases, may indicate a lower level of proficiency or lesser allotted writing time. Nominalizations in particular demonstrated a strong relationship with both allotted time and proficiency, further suggesting that …

Examining The Willingness To Communicate (Wtc) Scale With Advanced Foreign Language Learners, Colin Lilya
Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the effectiveness of a Willingness to Communicate (WTC) scale with advanced foreign language (L2) learners. The WTC instrument included sections on communicating with native speakers of the L2 and peer language learners in various settings (at home, abroad, in-class and online). As most prior research had focused on beginning language learners, for this study, we recruited participants who began to learn their respective languages in informal, long-term immersion settings. Participants took the WTC survey as part of a larger self-assessment instrument with a subset of 600 intermediate and advanced level Spanish (n = 339), Portuguese (n = …

The Cholera-Fiend: Cheap Fiction, Medical Professionals, And Entertainment, Sariah Fales Harrington
Theses and Dissertations
First published in 1849, Charles Averill’s The Cholera-Fiend follows three villains as they attempt to artificially propagate cholera for their own villainous purposes in New York City. Gumbo, a Black servant to one of the villains, is meant to be the humorous relief in the text, but Gumbo experiences a calculated dehumanization from human to disabled, which causes him to be more at-risk for a health crisis—such as a tapeworm or cholera—than his white counterparts. Through analyzing the genre of cheap fiction, the views of medical professionals towards Black bodies, and other ways Black bodies were used as entertainment, I …

Temporal Fluency In L2 Self-Assessments: A Cross-Linguistic Study Of Spanish, Portuguese, And French, Mandy Case
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explores the relationship between temporal fluency and second language (L2) learners' self-assessed and externally assessed proficiency level across the target languages French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Temporal fluency is operationalized as articulation rate (the speed of speech), the mean length of utterance, and the silent pause frequency. Participants (n = 283) in this study are native English speakers enrolled in upper-division language courses at Brigham Young University (BYU). Each participant completed both a self-assessment (the Language Ability Self-Evaluation Resource or LASER) as well as the Computerized Oral Proficiency Interview (OPIc) to receive an external proficiency assessment. Temporal fluency …
Madwoman On The Screen: Streaming Forms Of Feminine Power, Kassandra I. Schreiber
Madwoman On The Screen: Streaming Forms Of Feminine Power, Kassandra I. Schreiber
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores how the formal aspects of streaming platforms create a female inheritance that helps foster multiple representations of femininity and womanhood which empowers women. Building off of Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar's Madwoman in the Attic, the paper argues that because streaming platforms produce original content, are a space for multiplicity and interconnection, and act as a type of archive, they can build a female inheritance. The combination of these attributes offer a widespread emergence of multiple stories that valorize women and what is socially coded as feminine, creating a creative network that improves the representation of women …

"This Is The Way": Gender Representation In Disney's The Mandalorian, Brooke Solorio
Theses and Dissertations
When Disney released The Mandalorian, it quickly became the top show on its highly popular streaming platform. As with all media wielding this level of exposure, it is important to closely examine its content for depictions of peoples including females. In accordance with Sandra Bem's gender schema theory, the implicit messaging in this series can influence the formation of people's mental shortcuts about what it means to be female. This study employs content analysis to illuminate the portrayal of physical and non-physical attributes of the women present in the two seasons existing at the time of this study. Results reveal …
“Surfaces And Appearances”: Character, Physiognomy, And Communication In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S A Message From The Sea, Rachel Gouff
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the way physiognomy works within Charles Dickens’s and Wilkie Collins’s novella, A Message from the Sea. The novella develops and promotes a version of physiognomy with limits, illustrating these limits through the experiences of its characters and through the symbolism of various objects such as tombstones, ghosts, and—most notably—the message in the bottle. Physiognomy, used repeatedly by various characters throughout the text, is nearly always able to correctly predict people’s general moral character. However, using physiognomy alone leaves a character’s history, motivations, and deep emotions as indecipherable as the parts of the bottle’s message where the ink …
