Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A trio of papers on the so-called "Lehi's Cave" near Jerusalem begins with a short paper by Lamar C. Barrett summarizing what is known about the cave, usefully introducing a topic where speculation and folklore have multiplied . Joseph Naveh's paper from the Israel Exploration Journal (1963) describes the discovery of the cave and its contents and gives a proposed translation of the inscriptions scratched on the wall. It was obviously a burial cave since it contains three funerary benches but no riches or treasures. The inscriptions, he postulates, were done at different times and include the very unusual figures …

The faculties and administrators of the seminaries and institutes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met in August at Brigham Young University to enjoy a three day symposium of the Book of Mormon. Topics discussed included Women in the Book of Mormon, a comparison of Third Nephi to the Sermon on the Mount, Priesthood Principles and Church Organization in the Book of Mormon, Ancient Near Eastern Background of the Book of Mormon, and Priesthood versus Priestcraft among the Nephites. Progress continues on several fronts. Jay Huber from Ricks College and T. Stephen Eastmond from Santa Ana College are combining effort studying chronology and astronomy in the Book of Mormon. Ken Jenkins in Berkeley, California, continues his creative and monumental efforts at computer analysis of Book of Mormon texts. Blake Ostler in Salt Lake City is moving ahead with his study of word pairs in the Book of Mormon. Brian Stubbs has submitted four installments of his linguistic analysis of New World and Old World language phenomena. Bruce Young in Somerville, Massachusetts, Michael Bundy in Ogden, Utah, and several others …

Cooperation. The Foundation has seen a lot of it in the lase three months, from many sides! And the results are rewarding to all, as this issue of the Newsletter should show. We are more efficient, thanks to institutional cooperation from Brigham Young University . We are broader based, thanks to cooperation from the Church Educational System and BYU's Campus Education Week. We are more productive, thanks to new volunteers. We can plan more confidently, thanks to generous gifts and pledges. We continue to discover, without surprise, that there is something for everyone to do.

Manager's Report
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, federal tax identification number 95-3442860, was incorporated in 1979 . In July 1981, its newsletter circulation was 850; currently over 3,000 newsletters are mailed to 43 states and 17 foreign countries. To date, over 4,000 Reprints and Preliminary Reports have been distributed. Recent asset acquisitions include a multilith offset press . Last fiscal year 46 people made financial contributions to FARMS; this year 204 people have contributed. FARMS has four part-time employees.

One of the Preliminary Reports offered with this issue is an examination of "International Relations and Treaties in the Book of Mormon'' by Mark Davis and Brent Israelsen. Their purpose is to identify ''principles of the law of nations'' in the Book of Mormon.

One of the papers offered in this issues' Reprint Series is "Pre-Columbian Old World Coins in America: An Examination of the Evidence, '' by Jeremiah F. Epstein (Current Anthropology 21 [Feb. 1980]: 1-20). Epstein surveys the field of Old World coins dating to pre-Columbian times that have been found in the United States, particularly within the last three decades, to determine how seriously such items should be taken. If valid, the existence of such coins would obviously be a powerful argument for diffusionists.

The Book of Mormon Bibliography, an index of all serious studies about the Book of Mormon, should be ready for distribution this fall . It already contains over 1,850 entries. This monumental bibliography will be the first relatively comprehensive listing of articles, papers, book and theses dealing with the Book of Mormon. It will provide a solid base for the Book of Mormon Encyclopedia and facilitate other organized research on Book of Mormon topics as well as guide development of the FARMS Reprint series. It should also help prevent unnecessary duplication of research. When it is available, we hope many …

They include dean of Mormon scholars Hugh Nibley, now professor emeritus of Ancient Scriptures at BYU; Merrill J. Bateman, former dean of BYU's School of Management; Blaine T. Hudson, president of Blaine Hudson Printing in Salt Lake City; Charles D. Tate, editor of BYU Studies; Robert K. Thomas, former BYU academic vice-president; and Jay M. Todd, managing editor of the Ensign.

A critical edition of the Book of M:Jrrron may be a reality within a few months. FARMS has supplied Robert F. Smith sane materials needed to complete a critical text of the various editions of the Book of M:Jnnon. The annotated text will show each change which has teen made in the Book of Mormon from the first manuscript down to the newest edition. "Having an accurate text, of course, is an essential step in the scholarly study of the book," points out John Sorenson, "and Fob's unusual dedication and patience will make this significant contribution possible."

Paul's Detention Site In Israel Believed Found

Reuters reports that archaeologists in Israel have uncovered a Roman governmental complex in Caesarea where they believe Paul was held in detention. In Acts 23-26 we read that Paul was kept in Herod's judgment hall in Caesarea, where he faced in turn Felix, Festus, and Agrippa and where he appealed to be sent before Caesar's judgment seat in Rome. An inscription found in the site indicates that the complex housed the government bureau responsible for internal security for Judea, making this complex the likely spot for Paul's incarceration and hearing before the Roman governor.

Hebraic Elements In The Language Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

Recent research has yielded another interesting clue about the language of the Nephites and about the manner in which it was translated into English. By comparing the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon to the subsequent printed versions, Royal Skousen has found that the original English-language text of the Book of Mormon contained expressions that are uncharacteristic of English. One such expression is a Hebrew-like conditional clause.

Six stakes in the Denver area jointly sponsored a two-day conference in September and asked FARMS to provide speakers on the Book of Mormon. Daniel C. Peterson spoke on "Evidences for the Authenticity of the Book of Mormon," Ann Madsen discussed "Isaiah in the Book of Mormon," Truman G. Madsen talked about "The Spiritual Significance of the Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon," and John W. Welch addressed "King Benjamin's Speech as Sacred Literature." Approximately 500 people in two locations attended.
