Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to develop criteria for creating thematic literature units appropriate to the English language facility and to the culture of students in the LDS secondary schools in the South Pacific, and (b) to create three thematic literature units at the Form 5 (11th grade) level which would exemplify the recommended criteria.
An analysis of questionnaire responses revealed that a concept-centered approach to literature should take precedence, with geographical literature—especially Polynesian—also receiving emphasis. Less attention should be given to developing skill in literary analysis, and more focus placed upon systematically reinforcing other language arts …

A Study Of The Definition Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ And Its Theological Implications In Latter-Day Saint Literature, David Earl Perry

Has there been an historical development of the definitions? Can any disagreements be rationalized? The results of this research reveal that the gospel is complex in that it is capable of handling all the problems of eternity, yet it is simple in that it is a plan of specific principles which lead man step by step to perfection. The author determined that ancient and modern sources do agree in placing six "first principles" at the beginning of …

Religiosity In 5-D: A Critical Note, Darwin L. Thomas, Andrew J. Weigert

Faculty Publications

The equivocation which may result from violation of natural language or face I validity is manifested in an article by Faulkner and DeJong (1966), "Religiosity in 5-D: An Empirical Analysis." The authors (1966:246-247) claim to be measuring and testing the associations among Glock's (1962) five dimensions of religiosity. They adequately refer to his dimensions as "experiential (feeling, emotion), ritualistic (religious behavior, i.e., church attendance), ideological (beliefs), intellectual (knowledge), and consequential (the effects in the secular world of the prior four dimensions)." The empirical "definition" of the dimensions, however, is given by the items used to measure them. It cannot be …
