A Study Of The Artistic Philosophy Of Mahonri Mackintosh Young, Albert John Swensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine Mahonri M. Young's philosophy of art as recorded in his personal writings and the writings of his contemporaries—particularly his close friend, Jack Sears.

Magazines, books, newspapers, and miscellaneous unpublished materials such as letters, theses, scrapbooks and personal papers were examined for the purpose of becoming more familiar with the character and personality of Mahonri Young. From these sources of information the following was attempted: (1) to record anecdotes and experiences which may have had some significance on the development of his philosophy, (2) to glean from his own writings his feelings and …

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons Jan 1971

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons

Theses and Dissertations

The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. Later editions reflect the missionary concerns of the church (1840), the tremendous persecution the saints are subjected to (1841), the Church difficulties after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (1849), the call …

Kitsch In The Visual Arts And Advertisement Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Lori Schlinker Jan 1971

Kitsch In The Visual Arts And Advertisement Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Lori Schlinker

Theses and Dissertations

The writer's reason for making this study is a felt lack of taste and a general misunderstanding and misuse of the visual arts in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is convinced that art, generally considered as a matter of personal taste, is actually a matter of professional judgement. A characteristic of our time is the "do-it-yourself" trend and to make up ones own mind about everything without any consultation of authorities and also a loss of feeling for integrity in productions of the human mind and hand which broke down the fences against kitsch and opened …

The Establishment Of An Instructional Materials Program And Center In The Snake River Seminary District With Guidelines And Recommendations, Wayne Ray Doman Jan 1971

The Establishment Of An Instructional Materials Program And Center In The Snake River Seminary District With Guidelines And Recommendations, Wayne Ray Doman

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to establish an instructional materials program and center in the Snake River Seminary District to provide the equipment, materials, and technical skill necessary to enable local production of teacher conceived instructional aids. This was accomplished only after a majority of the teachers had, by a demonstration, been convinced of their need for production facilities.

The equipment and services to be included in the IMC were determined by a survey of teachers' desires and by recommendations from the District Audiovisual Committee, and then funds were raised by a special district project to procure them.

The …

Swiss Consulates In The United States, H. K. M. Oct 1970

Swiss Consulates In The United States, H. K. M.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

At the end of June, 1970, the Swiss Federal Council created eight new consulates in the United States and Puerto Rico. They were all of the same type, namely honorary offices, to be manned by honorary consuls. Honorary consuls, as distinct from consuls general and consuls, are not career officers. Thev receive their nomination in recognition of personal achievements - at their place of domicile. The newly elected honorary consuls come from such diverse walks of life as private enterprise, physics, sociology, business, engineering, textile industry, medicine and hotel industry. In this they reflect quite well the modern make up …

Resignation Of The Sahs Secretary And Newsletter Editor, Dr. Lukas F. Burckhardt, Lukas F. Burckhardt, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This past summer the Swiss American Historical Society lost the services of its Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Lukas F. Burckhardt. Dr. Burckhardt, after many years as Labor and Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, was promoted to become chief of the Chultural Section of the Swiss Political Department in Bern and he felt that he, therefore, hadto relinquish his SAHS offices. Knowing better than anybody else how much Lukas Burckhardt meant for ouor Society, I was very reluctant to accept his resignation, yet in the end could do nothing but honor his wishes.
