The Virtues Of The Heart: The Beatitudes In Patience, S. L. Clark, Julian N. Wasserman
The Virtues Of The Heart: The Beatitudes In Patience, S. L. Clark, Julian N. Wasserman
Quidditas
The heart as an enclosure, changeable over time, and, like the communal chalice, capable of being emptied only to be filled again, proves to be one of the most complex symbols in Patience. The Pearl-Poet repeatedly focuses on the heart, from his inclusive plural reference to "herttes" in the poem's prologue (I. 2), to his conception of the Beatitudes as virtues of the heart (II. 13, 21, 23, 27), to his subsequent observations over the course of the narrative concerning the various states of the human – and even divine – heart. In fact, in the skillful hands …
The Christian Context Of Rebirth In La Naissance Du Chevalier Au Cygne, George L. Evans Jr.
The Christian Context Of Rebirth In La Naissance Du Chevalier Au Cygne, George L. Evans Jr.
Quidditas
The technique of composition through analogy, a distinctive trait of the Old French romance as affirmed by Eugene Vinaver in the Rise of Romance, is a major feature of La Naissance du Chevalier au Cygne, which is structured by the epic laisse. Written in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century to serve as a preface to the Old French Crusade Cycle, the NChCy recounts the birth of the Swan Knight, the legendary grandfather of Godefroy de Bouillon, hero of the First Crusade. The poem also relates the metamorphosis of the future Swan Knight and his five …

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell

It has not been our good fortune to experience this afternoon the bright invigorating October day I had anticipated. I wanted to introduce Henry Bouquet by a reference to his reliance on the beautiful October climate as he fearlessly marched fifteen hundred soldiers into dangerous Indian lands in Ohio, in 1764. Bouquet relied on the clear dry weather to speed his march, and on the absence of foliage to protect his men from any surprise attacks like the one that had decimated General Edward Braddock's military column, of roughly the same size, at a crossing of the Monongahela River on …

A little rabbit, centuries and centuries ago, Awoke in a great world and wondered where to go; It was a large and grassy world, green and sweet , And bunny's wiggly nose smelled good things to eat; He made a little trail while searching his daily meals, But never once suspected the dangers at his heels.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Michael Hoffman was born at Altendorf, Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, on December 15, 1837. He died at his home near New Basel, Dickinson County, Kansas. It is a far reach from the mountains of the little republic to the great central plains, the very heart of the great republic. The life, the struggles and hardships, the hopes and ambitions and the accomplishments of this man are typical of the development of our country.

Readers of Mari Sandoz' Old Jules will remember that this enthusiastic pioneer not only helped newcomers to the frontier file claims but also sent off to family, friends and journals a blizzard of letters extolling the rich soil of Nebraska and the free land available to anyone willing to work it. Among the Swiss attracted to Nebraska by this fervent praise was Auguste Lambelet, who gained American citizenship and title to his homestead in Knox County in 1889. While even after forty years of residence in Nebraska, he never learned English, his descendants, many of whom still live in the …

Klaus Anderegg, "Oberwalliser Emigration Nach Uebersee Im Dritten Viertel Des 19. Jahrhunderts: Ursachen Und Stellungnahmen," Schweizerisches Archiv Fur Volkskunde, 76 (Base 1, 1980) , 176 -96., Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
This well-researched article is part of a larger study on the overseas migration from the Oberwallis between 1850 and 1914. The author strives to reveal the experiences, views and motivations of the so-called common people. He interprets - in my view mistakenly - emigration as primarily a demographic-economic crisis phenomenon. He describes those postulated crises and offers contemporary comments, especially those made by pastors and journalists, to substantiate his claim. These comments are taken too much at face value, I believe, and the author fails to grasp the broader meaning of nineteenth century migrations overseas, their being part and parcel …

Hans O. Staub, "The Tyranny Of Minorities," Daedalus, 108 (Summer, 1980), 159-68., Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
The central thesis of Hans O. Staub, editor-in-chief of Zurich's Weltwoche, is sharply formulated: "It is not the majority that governs. Minorities of all kinds have become decision-makers; they dominate, they tyrannize, or terrorize the majority which appears principally as a conglomerate of constantly changing minorities" (p. 159). To prove his thesis, the author surveys recent events in Spain (Basques and Catalonians), France (Corsicans and Bretons), Great Britain (Welsh and Scots) , Switzerland (Jurassiens) and Germany ("Grunen") . (He could have added today's Iran with the rising dominance of the "Fundamentalists".) Staub then observes: The "flight into the minority …

John Casparis And Edmund W. Vaz, Swiss Family, Society And Youth Culture. Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1979., Bruno Gujer
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
This little monograph of around one hundred pages attempts to "show, for a comparative sociology of youth, that youth cultures are a systemic property of urban industrial society, and that no 'special' circumstances need to be invoked in order to explain their emergence and persistence." In the first two chapters, the authors briefly survey the salient features of modern Swiss society and the social world of Swiss youth. The study then focuses almost exclusively upon teenagers who upon leaving school enter an apprenticeship (51.3 percent of that age group in 1970). These young people, although more integrated into the working …
Don Yoder, "Palatine, Hessian, Dutchman: Three Images Of The German In America," Ebbes Fer Alle - Ebber Ebbes Fer Dich. Something For Everyone - Something For You. The Pennsylvania German Society, 14 (1980), 107-29, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
In this densely documented, lucidly structured, and learned article Don Yoder, Professor of Folklore and Religion at the University of Pennsylvania, explores eighteenth century roots of stereotypes for German- speaking immigrants and their descendants, regardless of their national origin . He traces the evolving meaning of the three terms ' Palatine', 'Hessian ', and ' Dutchman' in their historical context . As always, Professor Yoder transcends any myopic, America centered view and sees the emergence of the stereotypes in their broader Atlantic context . The at times in tense relationships between English and Palatine princely families and denominational groups, for …

In your genealogical studies, have you ever come across a journal, diary, or other written material that discusses a relative's attempt to receive a patent for some new and novel invention? Do you know for a fact that one of the people you are researching was involved in the "Spirit of Invention" that surged through the world, specifically the United States, during the 19th century? Or, just on a lark, maybe a subject of yours patented something and you don't even know it. If any of these possibilities are even remotely feasible, I can help provide you with some more …

"This book has not one hero, but a multitude of heroes," comments Don Yoder in his foreword to Pennsylvania Immigrants. "The sources portray them with all their human shortcomings and all their faith and hope" 37 (p. x). This compact edition of previously published but dispersed lists combines the labors of European scholars with Don Yoder's expertise who not only translated and rearranged the material, but augmented it with. a wealth of American data. His edition contains five contributions with information on some 3,100 immigrants mainly to colonial Pennsylvania. It includes Elizabeth P. Bentley's index of names (pp. 341-391) …

The transformation of history takes place constantly. Language changes. Political structures replace each other. Man grows through the stages of his life. When we look back we recognize the extent of the changes, the path we had to come and "the forms we walked through" in the words of Gottfried Benn. One paradigm of transformation can be found in architecture, and two Swiss author, Erdmann Schmocker and Berchtold Weber, have created a beautiful book to demonstrate such a process in the case of the Swiss city of Bern. They show us how it grew from a medieval town to the …

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry
Theses and Dissertations
"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

Will Rogers, who claimed partial Indian ancestry, used to like to point out that his ancestors met the Mayflower at the dock. Be that as it may, it is certain that the dock was not crowded. The fact is, as John F. Kennedy once wrote, that this is a nation of immigrants. The vast majority of us are descendants of immigrants. Therefore, the history of this country, particularly at the grassroots level, is a story enacted by the immigrant.
