Jens Kjar: From Horsens To Atlantic, Signe Nielsen Betsinger

The Bridge

Of course things are coming back. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. Prosperity always has followed depression." 1 These encouraging words were spoken by Jens Kjar in Atlantic, Iowa, over twenty-five years ago to a newspaper reporter who was as intrigued by this man as I am. Who was Jens Kjar? How did I come to know about him? And why do I write about him today?

Perceived Similarity And Value Agreement Identification With Parents Among Lds Adolescent Males, Thomas Lee Partridge

Theses and Dissertations

Four models of parental identification (perceived similarity with father, perceived similarity with mother, agreement with important parental values and agreement with more trivial parental values) were constructed. The effects of several parenting behaviors (i.e., support, undifferentiated control, guilt and love withdrawl) as well as various structural variables upon the parental identification of a sample of LDS adolescent males were tested. Data were obtained from 565 adolescents and their parents and the data for each boy was linked with that of his parents.

Parental support and family religious and recreational activities were found to be the most reliable predictors of parental …

Stylometry And Wordprints: A Book Of Mormon Reevaluation, Brian Curtis Roberts Jan 1983

Stylometry And Wordprints: A Book Of Mormon Reevaluation, Brian Curtis Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a project which investigates the science of stylometry and wordprints; the analysis of writing style characteristics. The focus is placed on reexamining a wordprint study done by Wayne Larsen and Alvin Rencher wherein the Book of Mormon was analyzed against texts by those who are purported to have written it. The difference in this study from the first was that new wordprint definitions were developed using a junction grammar program created by Eldon Lytle, the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was employed as the base text, the phrase "it came to pass" was deleted and …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

A History Of Mormon Periodicals From 1830 To 1838, Richard G. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The "Mormon" Church has published over one hundred different periodicals since the purchase of its first printing press in 1831. The early Latter-day Saint newspapers set many precedents for the myriad of Mormon publications that would follow. This is a study of the periodicals of the Church from its origin in 1830 to the exile of its members from missouri in 1839. It discusses the reasons and purposes behind early Mormon journalism and the effects of this printed material on Mormon history.

This work also gives a history of the five church periodicals published during the era mentioned above, specifically, …

Mormon Stereotypes In Nineteenth Century German Literature: The Fiction Of Amalie Schoppe And Balduin M Ollhausen, Robert Lee Warthen Jan 1983

Mormon Stereotypes In Nineteenth Century German Literature: The Fiction Of Amalie Schoppe And Balduin M Ollhausen, Robert Lee Warthen

Theses and Dissertations

Leonard J. Arrington and Jon Haupt have identified seven stereotypes of Mormons in nineteenth century American fiction which influenced public opinion about them, ultimately resulting in anti-Mormon legislation. Since westerns were also extremely popular in Germany, the writings of two popular German novelists of the eighteen hundreds, Amalie Schoppe and Balduin Mollhausen, were analyzed to determine whether their Mormon characters are similarly stereotyped. Mormon stereotypes associated with adventure writing were found in the works of both authors, but not those associated with polemical novels. It was concluded that their writing still had an adverse effect on public opinion, though the …

Ii. Michael Schlatter: A Man In Between: A Contribution To American Ecclesiastical And Secular History Of The Eighteenth Century, Marthi Pritzker-Ehrlich

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This biographical sketch of Michael Schlatter (1716-1790) presents a summary view on the basis of a doctoral dissertation which dealt mainly with his activities in Pennsylvania as commissioner of the Dutch-Reformed Church. Reverend Schlatter had moved to Pennsylvania at a time when thousands of Swiss and Germans were arriving in that North American province; as a Reformed minister, however, he belonged to a privileged elite among immigrants. He is a remarkable personality in eighteenth century American history because of his involvement in three areas.

Clausens On The Move: Chicago, St. Ansgar, Virginia, 1870-1873, J. R. Christianson Jan 1983

Clausens On The Move: Chicago, St. Ansgar, Virginia, 1870-1873, J. R. Christianson

The Bridge

Few Danes in America have been as influential in Scandinavian American life as Claus Laurits Clausen. From his arrival in Wisconsin in 1843 until his retirement in Minnesota more than forty years later, C. L. Clausen was a central figure in the life of Norwegians and Danes throughout the United States of America. H. Fred Swansen' s biography remains the standard work on Clausen's life in English, but an earlier biography in Danish contains important documentary material, and there are numerous biographical sketches, including a particularly sensitive one by Clausen's son-in-law, Svein Strand.

Two Features Of Working-Class Phonology In Valladolid, Lynn Williams Jan 1983

Two Features Of Working-Class Phonology In Valladolid, Lynn Williams

Faculty Publications

Two factors prompted the research which led to the writing of this article: first, the apparent general consensus amongst linguists both inside and outside Spain that the phonology of Old Castilian is monolithic in terms of geographic and sodal space, and that it has more or less stagnated in the mould of traditional grammars, and, secondly, the insistence of many linguists on seeing some aspects of contemporary Spanish phonology as characteristic of certain non-standard varieties of Spanish, wilhout investigating whether the same features might not also be found in Old Castile.

Early Mormon Woodworking At Its Best: A Study Of The Craftsmanship In The First Temples Of Utah, Thomas Weston Welch

Upon investigation, however, it was discovered that there is one type of early utah mormon woodworking about which very little has been written and which includes some of the best efforts of these early craftsmen. This woodworking is the interior work done in the construction of the early mormon temples. This paper will attempt to document the state of early pioneer craftsmanship and show examples of this work.

The Pronunciation Of Women: Some Spanish Evidence, Lynn Williams

Faculty Publications

The material for this article bas been drawn from a larger sociolinguistic survey of various aspects of tbe phonology of 18-26 yr olds in Valladolid carried out between October 1976 and April 1977. The methodology used is basically the same as that developed by William Labov for his New York survey and has become one of the most established methods of enquiry into the social differentiation of the phonology of urban speech-communities. Informants were selected from the Valladolid census records in a semi-random manner and assigned to their socio-economic class according to the criteria of Spanish sociologists. Each informant was …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Career Appraisal And Status Of Burnout Among Religious Educators: Within The Education System Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Keith W. Allred

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of items regarding career appraisal in correctly classifying the status of burnout among Church Education System educators with six to ten years of service. Also, the factors considered most effective as deterrents to burnout were determined.

It was found that those who (1) did not feel they were progressing in their careers and (2) would change careers if possible were most likely to report burnout. Feeling needed in one's assignment and being recognized and appreciated for one's accomplishments, besides having a happy marriage, enjoying life, and living Gospel …

Danish Immigrant Contributions To Mainstream American Children's Literature, 1867-1983: An Overview, Karen Nelson Hoyle Jan 1983

Danish Immigrant Contributions To Mainstream American Children's Literature, 1867-1983: An Overview, Karen Nelson Hoyle

The Bridge

On the children's book scene in the United States, Hans Christian Andersen is the dominant figure among Danish authors. More than 800 translated editions of his books exist in the English language. The perennial strength of H.C. Andersen should not, however, draw attention from the notable contributions of Danish immigrants in the United States. Thirteen Danish immigrant authors and illustrators have contributed to mainstream American children's literature in the genres of picture book, historical fiction, and non-fiction from 1867 to the present. Excluded for consideration are translations from Danish, the religious press, the immigrant press, and periodical literature. Trade houses …

Iii. Switzerland And The Era, Hanna Widrig Nov 1982

Iii. Switzerland And The Era, Hanna Widrig

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

A little over a year ago the Swiss voters surprised the world with the acceptance of a referendum that added an equal rights amendment to the Swiss Federal Constitution. Is there an explanation for this sudden change of the rather conservative Swiss heart? Why was it that the Swiss equal rights amendment passed within the short span of ten years after Swiss women got the right to vote, when American women who have been enfranchised since 1921 were unsuccessful in the same pursuit? What was the Swiss strategy for this outcome, and what has been done in the past year …

Ii. Karl Herzog, The Historian As Activist: An Episode From The Time Of The Sonderbund, Sabine Jessner

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The Swiss historian Karl Herzog was one of the innumerable middle-class intellectuals who exercised an influential role on European liberal politics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Many scholars have analyzed the participation of the bourgeoisie in political life, and they reach novel definitions concerning membership of this intellectual group within the middle class. Historians such as Robert R. Palmer, Alfred Cobban, L.C.B. Seaman and Lenore O'Boyle have devoted particular attention to this concern. For example, the British historian Seaman has cautioned his readers to substitute the expression "professional classes" or "liberal professions" wherever he encounters the word, …
