The past year was marked by a steady continuance of activities started earlier. Perhaps the most significant step was the signing of a contract with Peter Lang Publishers in New York, a subsidiary of the well-known publishing house in Bern, for the volume of the Emil Frey Letters. This book is now in print and should be on the market early next year. As in earlier, similar ventures, SAHS members will receive a free copy; Lang will market the book, especially to libraries and people interested in Swiss-American history. The second installment of our PRO HELVETIA publication subsidy will cover …

In 1710, approximately 250 emigrants from the state of Bern, under the leadership of Junker Christoph von Graffenried, settled in North Carolina. They called their settlement Neubern, and thus the name of the state of Bern was probably first brought to the New World. This first Bernese settlement did not develop favorably; many of the immigrants died, and the rest were largely resettled more or less forcibly. Only a few former Swiss people still live in the area today. Nevertheless, the name of the town remained unchanged until the present day.
The 'Finiguerra' Venus And Her Children: The Iconology Of A Fifteenth-Century Florentine Engraving, Gwendolyn Bryant
The 'Finiguerra' Venus And Her Children: The Iconology Of A Fifteenth-Century Florentine Engraving, Gwendolyn Bryant
Quidditas
Interpreting Finiguerra's engraving of the planetary Venus and those born under her aegis not only entails an analysis of the engraving itself and other related images, but it calls for a reassessment of the work of Aby Warburg, whose research on this and other series of the planets cleared the way for many subsequent studies. Since Warburg's followers have consistently ignored many of his theoretical concerns, it is essential to outline them briefly if we are to understand his analysis of the 'Finiguerra' Venus.

My father stored his dynamite here in this barn-dynamite he used to change the course of the river. A decade after he died, my brothers Ed and Jerry got rid of the dynamite. I can imagine how they got rid of it. I can see them throwing a stick at a time down some canyon; a stick a time after urging the old fuses to burn, first slow then fast, until the leaking, seamy stuff had been ''gotten rid of.' ' No matter what they did with it, I suppose that it all went off, and no half box of …

This cold morning I let the dog out and walk barefoot with her. She is getting old , though she runs ahead, her half-wolf coat rippling over muscles. I follow her to a place beneath our hill where a river runs between two banks of brambles. She stops and lays her body in a shallow part and looks at me, hanging her tongue over her teeth. She has been with me since I was nine. I sit on a rock next to her, burrowing my toes into the silt, and scratch her neck.

The Bridge
Every morning when President Reagan leaves the White House and casts worried glances to the left toward Capitol Hill where Congress sits and impedes life for him, he can hardly avoid seeing the equestrian statue in front of the Treasury Building. The statue is one of the great heroes of the United States, a victor from the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman. He is shown mounted and surrounded by symbols of war and peace.

The first thing I learned when I got to Melton Street was that my mother's definition of a cottage and mine were different. I suppose all those illustrated editions of fairy tales I'd read had given me the impression a cottage was a quaint little white house, nestled in a cradle of hills, l surrounded with flowers and bleating sheep. With this notion in mind, I wasn't too opposed to my mother's plan to move from my first home.

The lights come up dimly, revealing a wooden structure that to the discerning eye might be accepted as a loom. Penelope enters with a lantern and sits at the loom. Slowly, but with skilled and steady hands she works, or rather unworks, the threads. Suddenly there is a flare of light which fills the chamber and Antinous and Eurymachus enter leading a group of revelers.
