Jewel said, "I ain't having no more dead people in this house,'' when the whole town saw Carrie lean over the side of the coffin and open Manny's mouth. Carrie was barely ten, and her voice, like all the girls her age, was louder and carried farther than the horn in my daddy's new Ford, so everyone heard her say, "What you got in your mouth this time, Fatso? It better not be no roly-polys like I saw you eating last week or no boogers neither.'' Even I heard and I was way over in the corner talking with Zeke …

Trusting Mother, Henry Woodbury Jan 1987

Mother has been in Buffalo since she got out of the asylum, and now Alfie and his wife, Julianne, are bringing her home. Catherine and I talk about this on the way to the Greyhound station. I say, "Alfie says we can trust Mother." Catherine says, "Maybe he can, but what about you?" I touch my cheek with two fingers. I have a trail of scar tissue beneath my eye that marks a huge difference between Alfie and me. This scar shows where Mother fired a bullet across my face.

Jerry pulled his knife out of Orfeo's back. He stuck it in the sand and pulled it out again clean. Orfeo moaned and turned over. He had passed out on the sandbar after Jerry threw a warm beer at his head to get him to stop singing. Orfeo sang a high note and collapsed into the canoe. "You sea cow. Let's move," Jerry said. Orfeo rolled over in the sand and saw the penknife in Jerry's hand. "Hey, all right!" Orfeo didn't even know he'd been stabbed.

My sister Pamela used to have a Partridge Family album with absurdly sappy lyrics and titles like "I Think I Love You" and "Stop and Turn Around, Somebody Wants to Love You." Some afternoons when my mom was gone, Pam would put the record on, stand in front of the living room mirror and look into her own eyes while solemnly mouthing the words of the songs. That was satisfying to her, and though I was embarrassed to watch her, I understood: she was in the fourth grade and there wasn't much else to feel. I believe my empathy then …

Ted would leave, once more, today. He stood, holding his cordless pyjamas up, looking out the bedroom window. The hills behind his wife 's house folded toward each other like a bunched quilt; humps of her violets grew on the edge of the orchard. She was not in their bed. Huia's hand was on Wehe's shoulder as she squeezed the sleep out of her eyes. "It's five o'clock," she said. " Rain's stopped and the tide's right. You want to go with me?" She did. She pulled herself out of bed on Huia's hand. She looked at her mother and …

I was told at the time I was old enough to understand that I was the exact reincarnation of John Wilkes Booth, and that when I finally became a man, I would, discriminately of course, kill the President of the United States in the coldest blood imaginable. Having such an honorable duty hanging over my head, I began to collect the President's series of stamps, pasting each one in my book with youthful fervor. I really thought that I might see one of these famous gentlemen walking along the rocky paths of our commune and bean him with my slingshot. …

It was early morning. When I answered the phone two people began talking on the other end. One said Ben had locked himself in the bedroom with her, and the other said to hurry. One thanked me and then they both hung up. My mom and dad walked into the kitchen. I told them. My mom sobbed and my dad peeled his pajamas off his belly. My mom said she thought the doctor said Ben's mom was getting better. She asked what had happened. I didn't know. My mom sighed. Then my dad said that someone should call Ben's football …

I ordered a cheap chicken dish; my date from Burley, Idaho, had a bowl of creamed celery soup. We asked for caviar just for fun and the waiter said, ''You have to order a meal.'' The bill was already thirty-five dollars we should have expected that in the Eduardian Room of the Plaza Hotel. Just before dinner, we had taken a ride around Central Park on a horse-drawn carriage. The coachman let the Clydesdale's hooves slosh around in wet December snow for a few extra minutes, and he received more money for a tip than we had paid for a …

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman Jan 1987

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman

Quidditas

The late Middle Ages was a difficult period for the mendicant orders. Many of their claims to be the "New Apostles," with special efficacy in the confessional, the pulpit, and the classroom—as Penn Szittya has recently shown—were under sharp attack. Though less visible as teachers and preachers than the Dominicans and Franciscans, the Carmelites were also the victims of anti-mendicant hostility from an early period. Furthermore, they were disliked by the other orders because they claimed superiority be reason of alleged great antiquity and the special patronage of the Virgin, for Carmelite legend holds that the Old Testament prophets Elijah …
