Bipsy has Mr. Sam for social science. Mr. Sam has an afro that sticks out over his head like an umbrella. Bipsy is a cheerleader and hates Mr. Sam. She writes Things to do on her worksheet and makes all the circles into peace signs. Peace signs are in this year. "Copy these notes!" Mr. Sam turns on an overhead projector and a million words appear squished on the wall. "Gosh," says Bipsy.

I could say that I run because it makes me feel good, or that I run to lose weight and to look better. I could even tell you that when I run I get more oxygen to my brain and that consequently I am more mentally alert, or that I run because John doesn't. But when I am completely honest with myself, I have to admit that I run to stay ahead of time.

Driving up to see you that day, I passed a girl on the road. She was walking and wore a white dress. She looked like she belonged in a painting or one of those prints. On the seat next to me there were some cookies that Vickie had made.

An Approach To The Book Of Mormon, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
Foreword to the First Edition
Everyone who reads this manual will nd new material in it—material that has not appeared in print before and is, therefore, of vital importance. The work is a new approach to the Book of Mormon and for that reason demands careful reading and study of every member of the priesthood classes using it.

One Saturday they took the bus up to Oxford Street again. They had been avoiding it for two weeks. Marva saw a stop she liked and just climbed out. She headed through the snow leaving footprints for Benny to follow. She knew he would eventually catch up.

One day, God came to Amanda in the form of a doorstop and said, ''Amanda? This is God speaking. Your sister Natalie is going to be a rich, very famous opera star. But she can't be a rich , very famous opera star until you join the National Guard." " Natalie!? A rich and famous opera star? You've got to be kidding!'' " No," said God, "I'm not." The next day , at breakfast, Natalie said she wanted to take singing lessons.

Opening sentence, beginning in media res, preferably with a smallish use of originality of phrasing or, more preferably yet, with the sly introduction of a character not normally seen in the average life; or best of all, a normal situation alluded to in terms that show some very quirky assumptions about human life. Especially if it draws the reader in, which is important.

Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud
Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud
Quidditas
Of all the Canterbury Tales, the Physician's Tale may well be the least appreciated. Its subject matter is distasteful in itself–a despicable judge abuses his position of public trust and authority by deliberately setting out to obtain an innocent young virgin as an object of lust, while too frustrate the even the victim's father beheads her after cold-blooded premeditation. But if that were not enough, the tale contains at least two apparently incongruous digressions, and the storyteller appends a moral that must make the reader suspect the Narrator has not been listening to his own story. Perhaps a modern …

Hijalmar Petersen Of Minnesota: The Politics Of Provincial Independence, Gerald Rasmussen
The Bridge
It is not often that we have the pleasure of reviewing the biography of a politically prominent Danish-American; in this case Hjalmar Petersen of Minnesota. To our knowledge Petersen was the only Danish-born governer of any of the United States -- Minnesota. The fact alone creates some interest in Petersen among Americans of Danish descent and to the Danish American Heritage Society. But by and of itself that does not warrant a biography -- or a book review. But, make no mistake, the author, Steven Keillor has demonstrated convincingly that his biography of Hjalmar Petersen is warranted and a worthy …
