Universal Writing Systems: Philosophical Languages And Humanist Rhetoric In Seventeenth-Century England, Grant M. Boswell
Quidditas
The early Renaissance, like the Hellenic Age and the Golden Age of Roman literature, was epistemologically oriented to the discursory practices of rhetoric rather than to the rational methods of philosophy. This preference resulted from the widespread adoption of linguistic presuppositions upon which humanist rhetoric is based. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the underlying principles of humanism had been replaced. The discursory competence that humanism had sought to develop had become devalued, and in its place other epistemological systems had arisen. Francis Bacon, the Royal Society, René Descartes, Isaac Newton, and John Locke all offered epistemological principles …

Memories And Autobiography Of Jens Lind, Jens Lind
The Bridge
I don't know if I can write anything that will read any different from thousands of other immigrants that came to make their home in the U.S.A.
The reason I came was mostly because of economic conditions. Another was adventure and restlessness which many young people suffer from in our days, too.
I was born close to the east coast in Jutland, Denmark, September 30, 1892. We were eight in the family: our parents, three brothers and three sisters and, of course, poor as church mice, like thousands of others.

The Order Of Santo Stefano In The Levant: An Unpublished Account Of A Voyage In 1627, Ilona Klein, Christopher Kleinhenz
Faculty Publications
On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. After having engaged in two fierce skirmishes …

Niels E. Hansen: Plant Explorer, Harald Jensen
The Bridge
At the age of seventeen, Niels Ebbesen Hansen enrolled at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, where he met Professor J. L. Budd, head of the Department of Horticulture and a creative and inspiring person. This meeting with Professor Budd eventually caused young Hansen to major in horticulture, and plant exploration and development became his lifework. He graduated in 1887 from Iowa State and for the next four years worked in large commercial nurseries in Iowa. This experience, not only supplemented his previous theoretical training in college but gave him an invaluable insight into the problems of northwestern horticulture.

Transatlantic Connections: Nordic Migration To The New World After 1800, Hans Norman, Harald Runblom, George Nielsen, Reviewer
The Bridge
Transatlantic Encounters is actually two books in one. The first half of the study, written by Hans Norman, describes the conditions in Europe, while the second part, written by Harald Runblom, describes the immigrants in America. Instead of limiting the topic to Scandinavians (Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes), Norman and Runblom identify their subjects as Nordic, in order to include the Finns and Icelanders. Relying heavily on earlier research, and following the usual stages of migration history, the authors have produced a survey of the migration from these five countries to the United States.

Preparing For A Career, Paul Grossenbacher
Preparing For A Career, Paul Grossenbacher
Swiss American Historical Society Review
At the end of the fifth school year, we all had the opportunity to take an intelligence test and, if you passed that test, you then could go to secondary school, which is similar to high school here. Even though you were only a sixth grader, the subjects were algebra, physics, chemistry, and foreign languages. It is very important in Switzerland that one speaks several languages because in Switzerland, a country less than one-third the size of the state of Wisconsin, four official languages are spoken. About 19% speak a real good French, about 10% are Italian speaking, only 1% …

Leaving The Farm, Paul Grossenbacher
Swiss American Historical Society Review
It was good to be back home again, but Verena enjoyed her first trip to Switzerland very much and she has made about five more trips since. She could learn where her ancestors came from. I was the owner of a farm then, and it was also the dairy which supplied New Glarus and later Monticello with milk. It was a good business, but we all really had to work too hard in those days. But we made a little money, and the day came when we could burn the mortgage.

Growing Up In Burgdorf, Paul Grossenbacher
Swiss American Historical Society Review
When old age starts t:o creep up on you, start looking back. You will be amazed how many beautiful memories will come back to light. That is what I am trying to do, look back and try Ito find old memories. I was born into a family of two sisters and five brothers; no more children were born to my parents, so I stayed the youngest one and a mother's little boy. My home was the "innere Sommerhaus" on the edge of the small city of Burgdorf. Burgdorf is mostly called the door to the famous '"Emmenthal." The Emmenthal is …

The winter of 1929 is long remembered for the deep snow and the cold. Highway 69 from New Glarus to Monroe was closed many times and the mountains of snow the snowplows pushed were reaching the telephone wires.
