Justice In The Black Hawk War: The Trial Of Thomas Jose, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

During Utah’s Black Hawk War 1865-1868 there were some instances of whites murdering Indians, and these people were never brought to trial. In 1866, Thomas Jose was brought to trial for killing an Indian, and he was convicted for murder. Even though his punishment was relatively mild, the justice system was made to work in defense of the Indians.

Family Life Education In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The 20th Century: A Historical Review, Ray W. Stringham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reviewed selected educational literature in almost 350 texts published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) from General Authorities and manuals which included content curriculum in adult family life education; for the adult women's organization (Relief Society); for the men's Melchizedek Priesthood; and for parents instructing their children at home (Family Home Evening).

Topics were ranked by century, according to frequencies of occurrence (FO) in the five major publications. Topics were also summarized by each decade. Tables were provided which summarized the top 40 of 78 topics identified. Recurring Themes suggest family is the basis …

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish Jan 1992

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish

Theses and Dissertations

In 1849, President Brigham Young commissioned a fifty man company, headed by Parley P. Pratt, to explore Southern Utah for possible colonization. The four month trek spanned the coldest months of the winter, and afforded some very harrowing and hazardous experiences. These events weave a heroic story filled with excitement and adventure, while simultaneously revealing the tremendous dedication and fortitude on the part of the explorers to successfully complete their mission.

Many of the Southern Utah colonies that were initiated in the subsequent years following the expedition were based on information gathered during this seven-hundred mile expedition. In addition, their …

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike Jan 1992

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.

Error Patterns In Research Papers By Pacific Kim Students, Chris Crowe Jan 1992

Error Patterns In Research Papers By Pacific Kim Students, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

By looking for patterns of errors in the research papers of Asian students, educators can uncover pedagogical strategies to help students avoid repeating such errors. While a good deal of research has identified a number of sentence-level problems which are typical of Asian students writing in English, little attempt has been made to consider the specific problems which a long research paper presents. Of these problems, Asian students have the most difficulty integrating sources from research and developing transition, unity, and cohesion. These problems stem not necessarily from different thought patterns or primary language interference, but from the challenge of …

My Father's Story, Jens Peter Nielsen

The Bridge

Jens Peter Nelsen, was born November 28, 1889 and was married to Gertrude Elizabeth Nelsen on July 14, 1915. They had eight children. He worked on the home farm until the fall of 1911 when he took a job in Ringsted, Iowa, where he learned sheet-metal work. For some years he had his own business, but in the 1920s, as result of poor economic conditions, he took a job in Dennison, Iowa, for about a year. From Dennison he, and his family, moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, for a year before moving to Sioux City, Iowa, where they lived for …

Danish Folk High Schools - Their Influence In America, Joan Mcinnes Jan 1992

Danish Folk High Schools - Their Influence In America, Joan Mcinnes

The Bridge

This is a personal story. It is an attempt to trace my philosophy of adult continuing education (ACE) to my roots in Denmark and to uncover the reasons why entering the Adult Education Program at Northern Illinois University (NIU) felt like coming home after many years of trying to find a place in a society that was philosophically out of harmony with my essence. Throughout my degree program, I have noticed that whenever Highlander Folk School was discussed in classes or in the literature, it struck a chord with me. This feeling went unexplored due to time constraints or other …

A Memoir Honoring Marie And Henry Werbes, Beverly White Jan 1992

A Memoir Honoring Marie And Henry Werbes, Beverly White

The Bridge

Washday was always a major event in our household when we were children. Early every Monday morning Dad helped Mother get the necessary equipment set up. In the shed just below the kitchen, he rolled the washing machine into place, and set the two washtubs for rinsing the clothes on sawhorses around it. Then he hauled two large cream cans of hot water from the creamery (about a block away), one for the washer and one for the first rinse tub. For the second rinse tub he pumped soft water from the cistern: Mother always put bluing in that rinse …
