The Choreography And Production Of "Jacob Five: A Journey Into The Olive Vineyard", Laurie Behunin
The Choreography And Production Of "Jacob Five: A Journey Into The Olive Vineyard", Laurie Behunin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of choreographing "Jacob Five: A Journey into the Olive Vineyard" was to artistically express a religious allegory in order to praise God as well as to bring the audience, dancers, and choreographer to a new understanding of the passage from which it was derived. The 39-minute dance was presented April 10, 1993 as a dance fireside. Following the performance, an informal discussion was held to give the audience an opportunity to respond to the dance. These comments were considered and recorded as part of the evaluation of this thesis. Both the thesis and video of "Jacob Five: A …

Ane Kirstine Jorgensen/ Bollesen, Dagmar Hoiberg
The Bridge
This is the tale of a courageous pioneer woman who with her husband Rasmus Jorgensen and daughters Caroline and Mette emigrated from Denmark in 1882, ultimately settling in Tyler, Minnesota. In her later years, she told the story in Danish to her granddaughter, Dagmar B. Hoiberg (Mette's daughter), who subsequently translated it for relatives and possible publication.
Danevang: The Co-Operative Danish Capital Of Texas, Cecilia Jensen Bell
Danevang: The Co-Operative Danish Capital Of Texas, Cecilia Jensen Bell
The Bridge
In 1894, J. C. Evers, an approved representative of the land committee (Landudvalg) of the Danish People's Society (Dansk Folkessamfund) stood observing the vast prairie of Wharton County, Texas. Within his heart he held a dream which was seeded, grew, blossomed and continued to bear fruit. Named the Danish capital of Texas in 1990, Danevang is the harvest of the first settlers of the colony.
Kai Eduard Rasmussen: A Danish American Hero, Val Hempel
Kai Eduard Rasmussen: A Danish American Hero, Val Hempel
The Bridge
Over the years, ever since immigration to the United States began, hundreds and thousands of Danes have crossed the Atlantic to begin new lives, to work, to settle and to become Americans. The vast majority of them have helped strengthen and build their adopted land, enrich its culture and add durable strands to that multicolored fabric that is America. Many stepped lightly and left few tracks while others broke bold new trails. A few fashioned memorable evidences of their journeys. Names such as Peter Lassen, Jacob Riis, William S. Knudsen, Jean Hersholdt, Victor Borge and others are known to millions. …
Anton Gravesen - Immigrant's Way, Anton Gravesen
Anton Gravesen - Immigrant's Way, Anton Gravesen
The Bridge
Anton Gravesen (1870-1952) became a well-respected merchant in Tyler, Minnesota, and banker in Askov, Minnesota. This autobiographical excerpt, provided by his daughter, Dagmar Gravesen, first records his experiences as a young immigrant and then describes his fast rise as a successful businessman. It ends with his philosophical acceptance of his losses during the Great Depression. Gravesen was born on a small farm on the Jutland heath. The death of his mother when he was 10 made him selfreliant and industrious. He not only worked for his father but also hired out to neighbors and his uncles as a sheep and …
Pioneer Life In The Big Dane Settlement, August Rasmussen
Pioneer Life In The Big Dane Settlement, August Rasmussen
The Bridge
My experience in pioneer life commenced in 1856, after a long and stormy voyage from Denmark to America in that year. I shall, by the kind assistance of the Independent, give a little of my pioneer life and settlement during forty-five years. My thoughts are running back to the first Christmas I celebrated here in America, in 1856. It was a merry one, as you will see farther on. My wife and I were then both young, about twenty-seven years each.
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Theses and Dissertations
This project attempts to demonstrate the value of literary approaches to the Doctrine and Covenants, using a predominantly formalistic approach. To establish a foundation, the first chapter discusses the rich literary content of the Doctrine and Covenants, providing examples of the various literary genres represented in it, such as narrative, saga, parable, and poetry. The second chapter presents portions of Section 76 that contain features characteristic of Hebrew poetry, such as figures of speech and parallelism. The third chapter analyzes ways in which Section 76's poetic dimensions are illuminated by "The Vision," a 312-line poem attributed to Joseph Smith. The …
Employment And Happiness Among Mormon And Non-Mormon Mothers In Utah, Kimberly Grace Andersen
Employment And Happiness Among Mormon And Non-Mormon Mothers In Utah, Kimberly Grace Andersen
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of maternal employment status on the happiness and/or unhappiness of married Utah women with children were studied. The independent variables were employment status, age, and denomination. Covariates were health, husbands income, and number of children. Denominational differences were not found to impact happiness, but age and employment status were related to happiness, with non-employed and younger mothers being happier.
Sympathy For The Monastery: Monks And Their Stereotypes In The Canterbury Tales, Shiela Pardee
Sympathy For The Monastery: Monks And Their Stereotypes In The Canterbury Tales, Shiela Pardee
Quidditas
The two monks that appear in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the pilgrim Daun Piers and Daun John in the Shipman's Tale, seem to be everything one would expect from medieval estates satire. They are attractive outdoorsmen with sophisticated appetites, fine clothing, and healthy complexions; in spite of their vows of poverty, they are the very image oof medieval prosperity. Although Chaucer conforms to the image of the worldly monk familiar to his audience, his intentions are more complex than simply to replicate and confirm the stereotype. In addition, he calls attention to the effects of the stereotype on the clerics …

Divergent Journeys: Devils, Readers, And The Narrator's Art In 'Þe Deuelis Perlament', Gary D. Schmidt
Quidditas
In 1509, Wynkyn de Worde published a five-hundred-line poem that he, in defiance of the poet's own suggestion that the piece be called 'þe Deuelis Perlament' (1 490), entitled 'The Parliment of Fyendys'. It would remain known by that title — if it can be said to have been known at all — for the next three centuries, when the Roxburghe Club reprinted de Worde's text about 1820 for private distribution. A wider audience would wait almost another half-century for Furnivall's EETS edition in 1868. But still another century would pass before 'þe Deuelis Perlament' began to be taken seriously …

Two Towns Where There Was Once One: The Aldea In Medieval Aragon, Donald J. Kagay
Two Towns Where There Was Once One: The Aldea In Medieval Aragon, Donald J. Kagay
Quidditas
No medieval era was more significant for the creation of royal, clerical, and urban institutions than the thirteenth century as sovereign and pope alike began to form the political structures of western European society in a way that closed many avenues of power to the trustees of societal authority of an earlier period, the nobility. Baronial resistance to the monarchical 'innovations' of the era would eventually direct the course of such state — building towards a fuller partnership between sovereign and subject. Though the best-known examples of such conflicts between custom and law occurred in England with the royal issuance …
