Book Review: Dorliker Auswanderer: Schweizer Siedlungspioniere Und Kulturbringer In Den U.S.A., Don Heinrich Tolzmann

Swiss American Historical Society Review

We are all aware of the phenomenon known as the "roots" revival which commenced in the 1960s. This occurred almost simultaneously with the ethnic revival known as "the new ethnicity." Again, there was not only national interest in roots and ethnicity, but there was also official recognition and legitimation of ethnicity.

Book Review: Yodeling In Dairyland: A History Of Swiss Music In Wisconsin., Philip V. Bohlman Feb 1994

Book Review: Yodeling In Dairyland: A History Of Swiss Music In Wisconsin., Philip V. Bohlman

Swiss American Historical Society Review

One of the most striking indexes of ethnic identity is the extent to which an ethnic group is able to demonstrate that its significance in the history of a region is greater than its number. I've never known whether this was an advantage or disadvantage to Swiss-Americans, whose numbers, after all, have rarely overwhelmed those of other ethnic communities. Southern Wisconsin, nevertheless, has long offered Swiss-Americans the exception that many took as proof of the rule. In Green county, particularly in the towns of New Glarus and Monroe, numbers were on the side of Swiss-Americans, creating for them what James …

Alfred Gozenbach And The Making Of The Valley Queen Cheese Factory Of Milbank, South Dakota, Patricia J. Frazee Feb 1994

Alfred Gozenbach And The Making Of The Valley Queen Cheese Factory Of Milbank, South Dakota, Patricia J. Frazee

Swiss American Historical Society Review

At the age of ninety-one, Alfred Gonzenbach, co-founder of Valley Queen Cheese, Milbank, South Dakota, still projects many of the qualities it took for _him as a young man of twenty-two to pack up, leave his home in Switzerland, and journey to America. He is witty, willing to tackle new adventures, unwilling to let old age's minor and major ailments get him down, and possesses an uncanny memory for dates and figures. He still has the twinkle in his eyes that helped him win the heart of Gertrude "Trudy" Hauser, his wife, over 58 years ago. The spirit that kept …

Of Roof-Rabbits, Rhubarb & Rutabaga, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Review

As most immigrants, we have readily adopted the main holidays celebrated in the United States. Thus, the family gets together at Thanksgiving for a festive meal. During our last Thanksgiving dinner, my youngest grandson, a first grader, animatedly explained how he participated in a class project. They vigorously shook cream, milk and sugar until they had butter, which was then used in the preparation of their Thanksgiving lunch. This provoked me to relate my experience as a kid about his age in using the "Ankemiili" (butter mill). When I had finished the story, my younger daughter exclaimed: "I never knew …

The Allegory Of The Olive Tree: The Olive, The Bible, And Jacob 5, Stephen D. Ricks, John W. Welch Jan 1994

The Allegory Of The Olive Tree: The Olive, The Bible, And Jacob 5, Stephen D. Ricks, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

In the Book of Mormon, the allegory of the olive tree—written by a prophet named Zenos and later quoted by the prophet Jacob to his people—stands out as a unique literary creation worthy of close analysis and greater appreciation. Besides its exceptional length and exquisite detail, this text conveys important teachings, deep emotion, and wisdom related to God’s tender devotion and aspirations for the house of Israel on earth.

In The Allegory of the Olive Tree, 20 scholars shed light on the meaning, themes, and rhetorical aspects of the allegory, as well as on its historical, cultural, and religious …

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley Jan 1994

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

"Withoute Words": The Medieval Lady Dreams In The Assembly Of Ladies, Colleen Donnelly Jan 1994

"Withoute Words": The Medieval Lady Dreams In The Assembly Of Ladies, Colleen Donnelly

Quidditas

Two poems, The Assembly of Ladies and The Floure and the Leafe, are unique among Middle English dream visions due to the gender of their narrators; both are narrated by women. In his edition of these two poems, Derek Pearsall argues that whether they were told by women or not is really of little importance. There are many examples of men, such as Lydgate and Deschamps, writing as women. However, while men may speak for women in other types of poems, a woman narrator of Middle English dream vision survives only in these two poems. Moreover, as Alexandra Barratt …

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy Jan 1994

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy

Quidditas

One of the most remarkable monuments of medieval literature in any language is the thirteenth-century French Lancelot–Grail Cycle (also called the Prose Lancelot, the Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian Romance, or the Pseudo-Map Cycle—the last because the texts identify the author as Walter Map, who complicated matters, however, by dying well before the cycle was written). Before turning to the subject indicated in my title, I'll situate the cycle and offer a few details about its phenomenal importance.

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls Jan 1994

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls

Theses and Dissertations

This study measures risk-taking predisposition among a conservative religious population of women, in this instance Mormon women. Risk taking is defined as a recognition of some probability of negative consequences to an action, which can include the loss of a potential reward as well as a punishment. A risk-taking predisposition results when individuals are not risk aversive but, in fact, enjoy risk taking.

Survey research collected at two conferences in Utah reveal the likelihood of moderate levels of rebellious and adventurous risk-taking predisposition among the over 500 Mormon women respondents. It is suggested that religious affiliation or economic and educational …

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson Jan 1994

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Other-centeredness and depression were examined to see if a relationship existed between the two. One scale measuring other-centeredness and another measuring depression were given to a sample of married Mormon women who did not work outside the home. Other-centeredness and depression were significantly negatively correlated. The women scoring in the top one-third of the range of other-centeredness scores suffered no depression on the depression scale. The factor most predictive for depression was the relationship the women had with her husband, and other-centeredness was found to overlap with this variable to some extent. The factors of health, income, and education were …
