Adolescents' Use Of Discretionary Time: A Time Use Study Of The Central Utah Area, Rebecca Hirschi Jan 1995

Adolescents' Use Of Discretionary Time: A Time Use Study Of The Central Utah Area, Rebecca Hirschi

Theses and Dissertations

This study provides Central Utah school and recreation leaders with local data on which to base their program development by collecting and analyzing data on adolescents' use of time, and to compare local statistics with national data. The research included participants from Nephi, Spanish Fork, and Provo schools. Each participant completed 7 days of a leisure time diary, which detailed daily activities. Single sample t-tests on the data revealed that Central Utah adolescents' time use is significantly different from national statistics. The differences in the statistics indicate that school and recreation leaders need local data on which to base adolescent …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Non-Lds Experience In Utah, Jesse Smith Bushman Jan 1995

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Non-Lds Experience In Utah, Jesse Smith Bushman

Theses and Dissertations

Utah's foundation under the influence of the LDS church, and the continued influence of the majority LDS population in the state make this area unique in the United States. This situation makes life for the non-LDS in Utah somewhat different than in other areas. Through a series of interviews with members of the Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist (National Baptist Convention), Buddhist, and Jewish faiths, this thesis produced a large body of qualitative data concerning the non-LDS experience in Utah.

The experience of non-LDS people in Utah can by typified, with a few exceptions, as a traditional majority/minority interaction. Elements of …

"Yet I Must Submit": Mormon Women's Perspectives On Death And Dying 1847-1900, Julie Paige Hemming Savage Jan 1995

"Yet I Must Submit": Mormon Women's Perspectives On Death And Dying 1847-1900, Julie Paige Hemming Savage

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores Mormon women's experiences with death as revealed in their personal writings from 1847-1900. The study includes an examination of women's involvement in caring for the sick and tending to the dead, as well as an exploration of women's personal reactions to death. A careful reading of Mormon women's writings from this period reveals that Mormonism equipped believers with powerful doctrines and rituals which helped women cope with the sorrow and profound grief that accompanied the deaths of those they loved. In addition, members living in Mormon communities rendered invaluable physical, emotional, and spiritual support to each other …

A Qualitative Study Of Interpretive Communities Among Lds Women, Oleah Clegg Jan 1995

A Qualitative Study Of Interpretive Communities Among Lds Women, Oleah Clegg

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that a number of researchers have turned to the concept of the interpretive community to explain how audiences interpret the media within the context of their everyday experiences (Biocca, 1989; Gunter, 1989; Lindlof, 1989, 1992; Radway, 1984; Schrøder, 1994). D. A. Stout (1993) conducted a study that discovered three interpretive communities among LDS women who watch television, establishing that interpretive communities do exist among religious media audiences.

In 1994, K. Schrøder showed that the interpretive community can be further understood by taking a "social semiotic" approach to analyzing interpretive community members' social interaction with other communities. …

The Cavendishes, The Evelyns, And Teasing In Verse And Prose, James Fitzmaurice

Quidditas

It is often noted by those who study seventeenth-century women writers that Mary Evelyn, wife to the famous diarist, pronounced Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle, "rambling as her books, aiming at science, difficulties, high notions, terminating commonly in nonsense, oaths, and obscenity." Such evidence is sometimes used to show that Margaret Cavendish deserved to be called "Mad Madge of Newcastle," an epithet that frequently made its way into biographical references to her in after ages. Nevertheless, it as easily might be the case Mary Evelyn was merely a little miffed with the attentions her husband, John, paid the not unattractive …

The Trinity Gild Of Coventry And The Royal Affinity, 1392-1413, Douglas Biggs

Quidditas

Perhaps the principal difficulty that all late-medieval monarchs faced centered on the process by which royal wishes and needs were transformed into governmental reality in local communities throughout the kingdom. This process, long ignored by historians, has in the past forty years received increasing attention. Most of this attention, following K. B. McFarlane's "Bastard Feudal" construct, has focused on personal relationships between the king or a magnate and local gentry.

The Rest After The Desert: Ending Confessions, George S. Tate Jan 1995

The Rest After The Desert: Ending Confessions, George S. Tate

Quidditas

Augustine, it seems, ends the Confessions twice: the first time neatly at the conclusion of Book 9; the second, problematically, at the end of Book 13. The first ending is an autobiographical ending, but what of the second? The structural and generic unity of the Confessions is a vexed issue, even though its coherence of theme is increasingly recognized. If the work is unified, is it unified as autobiography? If (as I argue) Augustine had come to find the conversion paradigm of his first ending to be unsatisfactory and had exploded it by adopting a new and dangerous strategy in …

"Properly Presented": The Autobiography Of Parley P. Pratt, Taunalyn Ford Rutherford Jan 1995

"Properly Presented": The Autobiography Of Parley P. Pratt, Taunalyn Ford Rutherford

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in light of current American autobiography research, intended to assert its worthiness for greater consideration by scholars of American culture. The findings suggest that the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt is comparable to other works now included in the canon of American autobiography such as Jonathan Edward's "Personal Narrative," Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Critical theories on the above autobiographies are applied to the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in order to show its applicability to the current dialogue of American autobiography. Finally, the …
