The Prevalence And Effect Of Gamification In Scottish Museums, Carol Allred, Dr. John Murphy May 2018

The Prevalence And Effect Of Gamification In Scottish Museums, Carol Allred, Dr. John Murphy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since their western beginnings in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the role that museums have played in society have changed. Early museums, like the Louvre in Paris and the British Museum in London, were initially galleries that were open weekly to the public. They primarily functioned as housing for art or artifacts collections and, later, as space and resources for research. However, over past two centuries, museums became aware of audience preference and put greater significance on the relationship between museum and visitor. Within the past 20 years, the focus for museums has centered around public service and education and …

Mormon Masses: An Analysis Of The Improvement Era’S Advertisements To The Separate Genders Circa. 1927-1933, Nicole Wechsler, Dr. Rebecca Deschweinitz May 2018

Mormon Masses: An Analysis Of The Improvement Era’S Advertisements To The Separate Genders Circa. 1927-1933, Nicole Wechsler, Dr. Rebecca Deschweinitz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project analyzed two main documents, comparing and contrasting the different LDS youth periodicals, namely the Improvement era and the Young Woman’s Journal. In this project I analyzed advertisements within the Improvement Era during the merger of the Young Woman’s Journal and the Improvement Era with special emphasis on how advertisements are being construed to the different genders before and after the merger in 1929. The Improvement Era is one of the few early LDS periodicals that have preserved the cover art and advertisements, unlike other magazines during this period in which all images were discarded. In so doing …

Change For Women, Change The World, Kiana Stewart, Dr. Daryl Lee May 2018

Change For Women, Change The World, Kiana Stewart, Dr. Daryl Lee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project goal was to translate from French to English significant chapters of a study on gender-based violence (GBV) in Senegal documented by Dr. Fatou Diop Sall. Dr Sall is the head coordinator of GESTES, a Senegalese research group focused on gender equality. A previous group of BYU students and ORCA recipients translated sections of the document that focused on domestic violence, and published the translation with the WomanStats Project, which is the largest statistical database regarding the status of women in the world (Hudson, 2015). The chapters I translated deal with GBV in different spheres, specifically educational spaces (schools, …

Finding Sources For The Red Vienna Sourcebook, Madeline Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle James May 2018

Finding Sources For The Red Vienna Sourcebook, Madeline Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In between the World Wars, German-speaking Europe was split into two major groups: The Weimar Republic, which consisted of current Germany, and the SocialDemocratically run Austria. Due to this SocialDemocratic government, the capital (and eventually time period) was referred to as “Red Vienna.” While the Weimar Republic has many firsthand accounts that have been made available to scholars, teachers and historians, relatively little has been compiled from Red Vienna. Our goal with this project was to discover more sources that dealt with Gender and Feminism in Red Vienna, as well as more female authors to gain a more complete and …

The Bishop Of Boston: What The Archives Have To Say About A Hero Of Religious Tolerance, Marie Johnson, Dr. George Ryskamp May 2018

The Bishop Of Boston: What The Archives Have To Say About A Hero Of Religious Tolerance, Marie Johnson, Dr. George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

French and American historians have been writing about Bishop Jean Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus for almost a century. However, when I discovered this man, I noticed that an element of his life remained in the shadows—how he united the Catholic and Protestant communities. He was a Catholic Bishop in Boston where Anti-Catholic sentiment was at its height among the Protestants. When he built the first Catholic Cathedral in Boston, it was largely funded by prominent Protestants, among whom was President John Adams. His three decades in Boston came to an end when he was requested by King Louis XIV to …

The Littlest Ballerina (Kamilla) An Original Ballet In One Act, Daniel Fifield, Shayla Bott May 2018

The Littlest Ballerina (Kamilla) An Original Ballet In One Act, Daniel Fifield, Shayla Bott

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At the beginning of Fall semester 2016, I discussed the possibility of composing music for an original ballet with Elise Meiners, an adjunct professor for the BYU Dance Department. She agreed to choreograph the ballet and together we assembled a production team. Daniel Schwicht, a BYU student, joined the team as the artistic designer. Spencer Duncan, then BYU theatre student joined as the dramaturg. The production team met weekly during that semester to develop an original story to be told in the form of a 30 minute ballet. Shayla Bott, the Ballet Area Administer agreed to mentor the project and …

Music For Ballet West’S Upcoming Children’S Ballet, Emmaline Sanders, Aaron Merril May 2018

Music For Ballet West’S Upcoming Children’S Ballet, Emmaline Sanders, Aaron Merril

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While many students apply for an ORCA grant to fund scientific research or, in the case of other Commercial Music majors, technical audio application, I wanted to complete a project that was purely artistic. My emphasis has always been in classical concert composition first and foremost, and when I received the opportunity to write the music for a ballet, I wanted it to showcase my best work. My ORCA grant made that possible by allowing me to hire 6 top quality musicians and a professional recording studio to layer live players in with my software instruments. The finished product is …

Uncovering Hidden Post-War Music Of Stefan Kisielewski, Haley Gammon, Luke Howard May 2018

Uncovering Hidden Post-War Music Of Stefan Kisielewski, Haley Gammon, Luke Howard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Stefan Kisielewski – writer, publicist, politician, and composer – not only lost many of his works as a result of the Second World War, but was controlled under Soviet censorship many years after it. Today there is a current surge of excitement and opportunity to uncover missing information regarding Kisielewski and his contemporaries, but still huge gaps and missing links. In an almost endless supply of information waiting to be discovered in Polish archives, libraries, and personal collections lies the key to knowledge that will help complete the picture of Polish music in the Soviet era. My project contributes a …

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp May 2018

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1563, the Council of Trent exercised fundamental societal control by enforcing marriage laws within the Catholic church which outlined in detail the process of marriage. Every Catholic marriage required a pre-marriage investigation.1 This new structure forbade couples from marrying within the 4th degree of consanguinity (blood relation) or the 4th degree of affinity (by marriage), nor where there existed a previous betrothal, impotence, one party not a Catholic, or the inability to read the banns if the bride or groom was not from the same diocese, etc. A waiver to any impediment required the overseeing bishop of the …

A Servant Of The Most High God: Elijah Able And The Priesthood Restriction, Juan Valladares, Dr. Gerrit Van Dyk May 2018

A Servant Of The Most High God: Elijah Able And The Priesthood Restriction, Juan Valladares, Dr. Gerrit Van Dyk

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of this project is twofold: first, we outlined the life and ministry of Elijah Able, an early Mormon Pioneer and the first well documented African American man to be ordained to the Priesthood. Second, we historically analyzed “the priesthood and temple restriction” (Race and the Priesthood, LDS Gospel Topics) on African Americans in the LDS church and how its understanding has grown over time.

Children's Role In Termination Of Parental Rights Proceedings, Makayla Okamura, Michael Kummerman May 2018

Children's Role In Termination Of Parental Rights Proceedings, Makayla Okamura, Michael Kummerman

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

People often argue that young children - especially vulnerable children - cannot gauge their best interests very well. But it turns out that there is success when courts allow children to have a voice in matters of child welfare cases. Various cultures and ideologies see child accountability in different ways. Considering those cultures and values and then factoring in the experiences of judges reveals that child are more capable of determining there best interests than currently policy acknowledges. Though the decision should not rest solely on the child's input, it should be heavily weighted when a judge makes a child …

The Destruction Of Cultural Heritage In The Yemen Conflict: Legal Implications And State Responsibility, Benjamin Passey May 2018

The Destruction Of Cultural Heritage In The Yemen Conflict: Legal Implications And State Responsibility, Benjamin Passey

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Since 2015, a violent war has waged in Yemen between rebel forces and a Saudi Arabian led coalition. This conflict has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, an unparalleled humanitarian crisis, and the flagrant disregard and violation of international humanitarian law. A silent victim of the conflict is Yemen's millennia-old cultural heritage. Dozens of ancient monuments, historical buildings, and museums have been systematically targeted and destroyed by the coalition in unprecedented acts of cultural warfare. This paper examines the culpability of the Saudi led coalition in committing war crimes, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the …

Reclaiming The Black Personhood: The Power Of The Hip-Hop Narrative In Mainstream Rap, Morgan Klatskin Apr 2018

Reclaiming The Black Personhood: The Power Of The Hip-Hop Narrative In Mainstream Rap, Morgan Klatskin

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

Hip hop, as a cultural phenomenon, leverages rap as a narrative form in periods of acutely visible political unrest in the Black American community to combat pejorative narratives of Black America as revealed in the American criminal justice system’s treatment of Black Americans. Hip-hop themes were prevalent in golden-age rap of the 1980s in response Regan-era war-on-drugs policy, which severely disadvantaged the Black community and devalued the Black personhood. Hip hop used narrative to reclaim the Black personhood while it served to encourage political involvement in the Black community, urging Blacks to participate in rewriting the narrative of Black America. …

The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland Apr 2018

The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

In 1921 Langston Hughes penned, “My soul has grown deep like the rivers” in his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (Hughes 1254). Weaving the profound pain of the African American experience with the symbolism of the primordial river, Hughes recognized the inherent power of water as a means of spiritual communication and religious significance. Departing from the traditional interpretation of the American pastoral as typified by white poets such as Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, the African American poets emerging from the Harlem Renaissance established a more nuanced pastoral landscape embedded within urban cultures, utilizing water in particular as …

Assembled dignitaries, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen: I am honored to be here today to discuss the role of faith-based organizations in relieving suffering and building self-reliance among the peoples of the world—particularly those who are most vulnerable. I am grateful to be in the midst of so many friends who recognize the tremendous good that is achieved when people of faith come together.

Using Women’S Voices In Teaching History And Doctrine, Jennifer Reeder Apr 2018

Using Women’S Voices In Teaching History And Doctrine, Jennifer Reeder

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In early July 1830, shortly following her baptism, Emma Smith received a revelation through her husband, Joseph Smith, about her position and responsibilities in the new Church of Christ. In the revelation (now known as section 25 of the Doctrine and Covenants), the Lord described Emma as an “elect lady” and charged her to “expound scriptures and exhort the church according as it shall be given thee by my spirit.” The responsibilities were weighty: the 1828 American Webster dictionary defines exhort as “to encourage, to embolden, to cheer, to advise, to excite or to give strength, spirit, or courage.” Likewise, …

The Book Of Mormon In American Missions At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, John C. Thomas Apr 2018

The Book Of Mormon In American Missions At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, John C. Thomas

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Historians describe the opening decades of the twentieth century as a challenging time of transition for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Manifesto on plural marriage in 1890 and the successful bid for Utah’s statehood in 1896 pointed toward rapprochement with American culture. But in an era of potential assimilation, tensions lingered as Mormons labored to “translate the things America demanded of them into the language and imperatives of their own faith.” Thomas G. Alexander observed that ongoing controversy in the era prompted Church leaders to search for “a new paradigm that would save essential characteristics of …

Principles And Practices For Motivating Youth For Scripture Literacy, Eric D. Rackley, John Hilton Iii Apr 2018

Principles And Practices For Motivating Youth For Scripture Literacy, Eric D. Rackley, John Hilton Iii

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Brother Howard enjoys teaching his students, and his students look forward to coming to class because they know they will learn important gospel truths. But there is a problem: students are not reading their scriptures as often or as carefully as they should. After careful consideration, Brother Howard decides to encourage students to complete their daily scripture reading by assigning course grades based, in part, on how often they read, and giving students daily quizzes that ask them to recall information from their reading. Brother Howard also plans a series of rewards if students complete their reading for a set …

Questions In The Book Of Mormon, Holt Zaugg Apr 2018

Questions In The Book Of Mormon, Holt Zaugg

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Questions are the catalyst that drives learning, providing a focus on what an individual wants or needs to know. They are the drivers that move knowledge acquisition to realms of greater understanding and wisdom. Karen Brown, a professor at Dominican University, describes questions as the heart of learning and the impetus for building knowledge. Teachers and students use questions to vet information and allow them to develop the ability to see when change is coming and to manage changes when they occur. Questions help people to zone in on important details that help to sharpen and refine their thinking.

Sitting Enthroned: A Scriptural Perspective, Jennifer C. Lane Apr 2018

Sitting Enthroned: A Scriptural Perspective, Jennifer C. Lane

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Putting scriptural texts into historical and cultural context has the potential to open up new insights and reveal what may have been hiding in plain sight. By allowing what might seem familiar in a modern perspective to be seen in the new light of a different cultural world, the ancient meaning can become clear.

Abish, Theophanies, And The First Lamanite Restoration, Matthew L. Bowen Apr 2018

Abish, Theophanies, And The First Lamanite Restoration, Matthew L. Bowen

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Abish and her secret conversion to the Lord “on account of a remarkable vision of her father” “many years” before the conversion of Lamoni’s household (Alma 19:16–17) emerge at a crucial moment in the Lamanite conversion narratives (Alma 17–27). In terms of a timeline of events, this “remarkable vision” stands first in a sequence of visions that result in the conversion of numerous Lamanites. Moreover, these visions, and the mass conversions that follow, precipitate seismic events on the landscape of Lamanite-Nephi history as Mormon recounts it. He mentions Abish’s name, gives a brief biography, and references the “remarkable vision of …

“Torah In The Mouth”: An Introduction To The Rabbinic Oral Law, Avram R. Shannon Apr 2018

“Torah In The Mouth”: An Introduction To The Rabbinic Oral Law, Avram R. Shannon

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

One of the primary characteristics of modern Judaism, as it developed from its earliest forms, is the acceptance of what is commonly known as the oral law. Over the thousands of years of Jewish/Christian interaction and discourse, Christians—including Latter-day Saints—have tried to understand the oral law and how it relates to their own beliefs and practices. In the historical relationship between Christianity and Judaism, this has sometimes led to the propagation of anti-Semitic beliefs, even unknowingly. When teaching about Judaism, whether in the context of the New Testament or world religions, it is important for Latter-day Saint teachers and religious …
