Discoveries and Excavations of Roman Tombs. During the past two years many Roman and Byzantine tombs have been opened by local villagers and Bedouins and robbed of their contents. When I visited Heshbon in early April I saw a number of men emerging from freshly excavated tombs, southwest of the village of Yesbdn. When they saw me they fled in the direction of the valley, making it impossible for me to recognize them in order to report them to the authorities for illegal excavation.

Arab Remains. Since Heshbon was an important city in certain periods after the seventh-century A.D. Arab conquest, it is not surprising that we find extensive remains of those periods in the top layers of the mound. We discovered that in Arab times the summit of the mound had been transformed into a square surrounded on three sides with buildings containing vaulted rooms, one of which we excavated. The pioneers in Palestinian archeology were not professionals in the field of excavations; in fact, none existed anywhere when they carried on their work. Many errors were made before methods were developed that produced the greatest possible returns for the money, effort, and time spent in excavations.

AS IN the 1968 season, the staff of the 1971 Heshbon expedition consisted of a number of professionals and students from both foreign countries and Jordan. The 52 staff members represented a variety of religious affiliations and nationalities: 19 were Seventh-day Adventists and formed the largest single group, but the Lutheran, Methodist, Swedenborgian, Catholic, and Baptist churches were also represented. Our Jordanian colleagues professed the Islamic faith. The foreign group, which comprised 40 people, consisted chiefly of United States citizens; others were nationals of Canada, Britain, Norway, Germany, and Holland. The purpose of the study was to (1) discover if the value system of blacks is different from the value system of whites, and (2) to determine if social class is a significant influencing factor in the shaping of values.
