Polygamy In The Bible With Implications For Seventh-Day Adventist Missiology, Ron Du Preez

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem Polygamy, or marriage to more than one spouse at the same time, is a worldwide practice that still affects the lives of many people. As such it must be given serious attention by any Christian group involved in mission work. As a denomination with a global mission emphasis, the Seventh-day Adventist Church is often confronted with the issue of polygamy. The question as to how these practicing polygamists should be treated must be approached from a biblical perspective.

Method Accepting the Bible as the authoritative revelation of the will of God, this project set out to make a hermeneutically …

Seventh-Day Adventist Tentmakers--The Key To Evangelizing Restricted-Access Countries And Unentered Areas, Stenio Gungadoo

Professional Dissertations DMin

In 1990, the Seventh-day Adventist Church set itself the goal of establishing a presence in each of the 2,313 unentered population segments of one million people. This task, which it intends to finish by the year 2000, constitutes a great challenge that can be met on the condition that the right approach is used. This project report suggests tentmaking as a viable strategy for reaching that goal.

Part One of this project lays the foundation for the involvement of lay people in tentmaking ministries by analyzing:

1. The gospel commission in biblical and theological perspectives

2. The biblical and theological …

James Malinki Of Malawi: Church Leader In Cross-Cultural Ministry, Jaspine D. Bilima

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist Church was established in malawi at the turn of the century (1902). Since then, stalwart Malawian workers have made immeasurable contributions to the development, growth, and expansion of the church in Malawi and the neighboring countries of Zambia, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Rwanda, and South Africa. James Malinki was probably the most outstanding early cross-cultural worker in the Adventist Church in Central Africa. As yet there has been no significant written account of his life and ministry.

Topic. This study examined the life and work of James Malinki of Malawi (1893-1982), whose ministry of nearly …

A Church Seeking Vision: A Study To Determine Which Stage Of Its Life Cycle The La Sierra Collegiate Church Is In, To Help The Church Clarify Its Purpose And Goals And Grow Numerically, Bradley K. Whited

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem

Attendance at the La Sierra Collegiate Church worship services declined for several years, then membership began to decline. Programs, finances, and morale were negatively impacted. The church had lost any evangelistic fervor it may have had in the past. The Collegiate Church lacked a focus for ministry other than the education of the children of the members, in spite of efforts at worship renewal by a new senior pastor after his arrival in 1988. There was no mission or purpose. There was no vision and work for God’s redemption in the world.

Method

A questionnaire based on David Moberg’s …

A Doctrinal Training Program Adapted To The Current Chinese Setting, Robert C. Wong Jan 1993

A Doctrinal Training Program Adapted To The Current Chinese Setting, Robert C. Wong

Professional Dissertations DMin

China is a country with the largest population and second largest territory in the world. During the past millenniums she has not had a considerable Christian background, but was strongly influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. In addition, from 1949 to 1990, atheism and evolutionism have been rampant under the Communist regime. By God’s grace and power, and through His faithful children’s witness, the Chinese church (including the SDA church), though experiencing severe trials, has not only survived but thrived. Church membership has increased dramatically.

The future of 200,000 SDAs and the progress of the Three Angels’ Messages in modem …

A Training Program In Pastoral Responsibilities For Church Elders In Lusaka, Zambia, Pardon Kandanga Mwansa Jan 1993

A Training Program In Pastoral Responsibilities For Church Elders In Lusaka, Zambia, Pardon Kandanga Mwansa

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem. Elders in Lusaka mission districts, Zambia, perform pastoral duties because there are only four paid pastors in charge of over 35 organized churches and 20 companies. This presents a problem because the elders have no training in these tasks.

Method. In this study a theological basis for lay participation in ministry was developed. A biblical study of the duties of church elders was pursued to ascertain the qualifications and duties of elders. A Seventh-day Adventist perspective on the duties and qualifications of elders was studied. A survey was conducted in Lusaka to find out from the pastors and the …

The Concept Of God And Sacred Music Style : An Intercultural Exploration Of Divine Transcendence/Immanence As A Stylistic Determinant For Worship Music With Paradigmatic Implications For The Contemporary Christian Context, Wolfgang Hans Stefani

Dissertations

Problems. The conscious conservation of religious music style in most cultures contrasts with the stylistic pluralism of Western Christian worship music. This study addressed the problem of decision making within the diversity of music available for Christian worship.

Purpose of the Study. The study's purpose was to explore a core aspect of worldview concerning the nature of ultimate reality--the concept of divine transcendence/immanence--as a transcultural determinant of sacred music style. The focus was the music rather than associated lyrics.

Methodology and Sources. This interdisciplinary study followed a philosophical approach to develop a theoretical paradigm. Documentary research from the …

Apostolic Succession In The Writings Of Yves Congar And Oscar Cullmann, Carlos Alfredo Steger Jan 1993

Apostolic Succession In The Writings Of Yves Congar And Oscar Cullmann, Carlos Alfredo Steger

Dissertations

Since its first explicit enunciation by the end of the second century, apostolic succession has been considered as one of the basic components of the church's apostolicity. As history shows, however, there have been different views on the nature and function of apostolic succession. Moreover, its legitimacy and normativeness have been challenged, particularly since the sixteenth century onwards. In our century, fairly established confessional positions have been reexamined in the light of new theological perspectives, as is evident in the documents produced by the ecumenical movement.

The purpose of this research was to set forth, analyze, compare, and evaluate Yves …

Problem. The purpose of this project was to develop empirically a curriculum to assist Seventh-day Adventist sports acrobatic coaches, physical education instructors, physical education majors and minors to integrate spiritual witnessing concepts into their acrobatics programs.

Method. The developmental process of Baker and Schutz (1971) was used to produce and validate the instructional product. First, the content of a curriculum to train Seventh-day Adventist coaches was identified through an examination of acro-gymnastic and witnessing literature.

The materials were divided into instructional units, arranged in a logical sequence, and introduced with behavioral objectives. It was established that the product would be …

The Correlation Of Personality Factors With Spiritual Gifts Clusters, Soo Dong Choi

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore hypothetical predictive models regarding the correlation between 16 personality factors and five spiritual gifts clusters.

Method. Two instruments were used to measure personality factors and spiritual gifts clusters: The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) and the New Spiritual Gifts Inventory (NSGI). 840 subjects were included in this study--students and their spouses of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Berrien Springs, Michigan, and undergraduate students …

Dissertations

The topic. William Clarence White (1854-1937), third son of Seventh-day Adventist founders James and Ellen G. White, was for thirty-four years his mother's counselor, editor, and spokesman. He was alleged by some to stand in a manipulative relationship to his mother and her work, a charge she denied.
