Codee Expects That Every Mathematician Will Do Their Odes: From The Battle Of Trafalgar To Calculus (Or Nelson To Newton), Steven Miller

CODEE Journal

Using the historical Battle of Trafalgar as a case study, we introduce students to mathematical modeling to describe and explore real-world systems. Starting with the question—how do force sizes and combat effectiveness determine which side wins?—we show how to use a blend of mathematics and computational tools to investigate the answer. Beginning by defining a simple differential equation model for combat dynamics, we analyze its behavior using differential equations and accessible algebraic techniques. We show how computational methods and simulations can support systematic, visual exploration and suggest conjectures that mathematical analysis can then establish. This material could serve as the …

Training Confident Witnesses: Evaluating A Practical Evangelism Seminar For The Twenty-First Century, Christopher Robershaw, Katherine Robershaw, Jose Philip, Jay Jay Moon

Witness

This article evaluates the effectiveness of the Practical Evangelism Seminar (PES), an eight-week training program designed to equip Christians to share their faith in the complexities of twenty-first century North American culture. Developed at Asbury Theological Seminary in partnership with Knox Fellowship,[1]the seminar addresses contemporary cultural complexities summarized by the acronym SPIRIT: secularism, pluralism, individualism, relativism, identity, and technology. Using pre- and post-seminar surveys from 112 participants between 2019 and 2022, along with qualitative feedback and participant observation, this study explores changes in students’ knowledge and confidence related to evangelism. Findings indicate measurable increases in participants’ confidence and …

From Nones To Affiliation: Listening To Twenty-Somethings, Jay Moon, Bethany Harmon Nov 2026

From Nones To Affiliation: Listening To Twenty-Somethings, Jay Moon, Bethany Harmon

Witness

This exploratory article describes the religious journeys of twenty-somethings (ages 20–29) who moved from no religious affiliation (“Nones”) to Christian affiliation. Over five years, four researchers conducted interviews across the United States and gathered 101 responses to questions about what drew participants toward Jesus, what pushed them away, which aspects of Christianity resonated most, and what advice they would offer to those sharing faith with their generation. While much evangelism in North America has assumed guilt, shame, or fear as primary entry points into gospel conversations, many participants described a different posture: indifference. Yet indifference often coexisted with a longing …

The Influence Of Christian Faith Sharing Through Social Media On Christian And Non-Christian Young Adults, Glen Bowman, Ruben Williams, Tyler Sheppard Nov 2026

The Influence Of Christian Faith Sharing Through Social Media On Christian And Non-Christian Young Adults, Glen Bowman, Ruben Williams, Tyler Sheppard

Witness

This paper explores the influence of Christian faith sharing through social media on young adults, both Christian and non-Christian. Drawing on two qualitative descriptive studies using semi-structured interviews and focus groups, the research synthesized codes and identified key themes regarding positively oriented Christian content on social media. The content generally appealed to young adults and frequently enhanced their spiritual thinking, motivation, and behavior. However, posts with a negative tone, poor scriptural use, or perceived hypocrisy tend to provoke adverse reactions, including negative thoughts about Christianity and “fight-or-flight” behavioral responses. The findings also reveal that young adults often underestimate the influence …

Gravedigger Missiology And The Crisis Of Evangelism, Jose Philip Nov 2026

Gravedigger Missiology And The Crisis Of Evangelism, Jose Philip

Witness

This article argues that the crisis of evangelism in late-modern North America reflects not only disaffiliation and secularization but also a structural and Christological deficit. Evangelism is often "practiced as managed impact under the language of missio Dei rather than as participation in the living agency of Jesus Christ.” Developing Peter Berger’s claim that Christianity has been “its own gravedigger,” the article reads Berger in two registers. The Social Construction of Reality and The Sacred Canopy explain how plausibility structures sustain belief and how their erosion weakens inherited evangelistic models. The Precarious Vision exposes how religious roles and language can …

A Franco-American University Collaboration: Oral Assessment With Cefr And Star, Nadia Yassine-Diab, Christina Torres University Of Central Florida, Aimee Schoonmaker

Journal of English Learner Education

This article describes the collaboration between faculty at two international
universities, one in France and one in the U.S., who partnered their students to practice and assess oral skills. Using computer-mediated communication with both synchronous and asynchronous elements, the collaboration provided a valuable opportunity for both groups to engage in pedagogically meaningful and structured exchanges integrated into coursework that mirror their future professional situations (O’Dowd et. al., 2020). More specifically, each semester, the U.S. TESOL students interview and assess French speaking English language learners using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and the Situation Task Action Results (STAR) interview …

Race, Embodiment, And Professionalism: A Critical Intersectional Analysis Of Brazilian Sign Language Interpreting, Roberto César Reis Da Costa, Sheila Santos Oct 2026

Race, Embodiment, And Professionalism: A Critical Intersectional Analysis Of Brazilian Sign Language Interpreting, Roberto César Reis Da Costa, Sheila Santos

Journal of Interpretation

This paper investigates the intersections of race, corporate professionalism, and somatic regulation within Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) translation and interpretation. While traditional translation scholarship prioritizes linguistic neutrality, this study employs an interdisciplinary critical methodology combining Critical Race Theory (CRT), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) to deconstruct how standard professional aesthetics inadvertently sustain systemic racism and Eurocentric cultural erasure. Utilizing a textual deconstruction of Article 5 of the National Libras Code of Ethics alongside an autoethnographic mapping of workplace visual ergonomics, we examine how racialized aesthetic expectations regulate and pathologize cultural markers such as braided hairstyles, …

An Exploratory Case Study Of Accredited Interpreter Education Programs In The United States, Len Roberson, Sherry Shaw, Carolyn Ball, Sierra A.W. Rance

Journal of Interpretation

This exploratory qualitative case study examines how undergraduate signed language interpreter education programs accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE) maintain programmatic distinctiveness while complying with shared accreditation standards. Drawing on document analysis and semi-structured interviews with program directors from all 19 CCIE-accredited programs in the United States, the study investigates institutional, curricular, and contextual variables that contribute to successful accreditation and program sustainability. The study analyzed publicly available documents alongside interview data to identify commonalities and variations across programs in areas such as curriculum design, faculty composition, admissions and progression requirements, field experience, and institutional support. Findings …

Sequential And Global Learning In Signed Language Interpreter Education, Heather A. Turell Oct 2026

Sequential And Global Learning In Signed Language Interpreter Education, Heather A. Turell

Journal of Interpretation

Cognitive styles (Joughin, 1992) have been described as the means by which human beings prefer to learn. While cognitive styles and activities to support specific cognitive styles have been explored in various arenas of adult learning, they have yet to be applied to interpreter education. To explore this further, a pilot test was conducted to determine if the interpreting training activities designed for global and sequential learners aligned with their expressed preference for global or sequential learning tasks. Four student interpreters participated in the study. To establish the participants’ cognitive styles, they completed a learning styles questionnaire. Participants were then …

Nurses' Week, Sekia Lor

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

I am an academic advisor for nursing students who also happens to be a balloon artist. I created all of these nurse balloon animals during Nurses' Week to represent “better together.” These balloons were then given to staff members on campus to celebrate Nurse’s Week!

Family Tree, Margaret J. Demars Oct 2026

Family Tree, Margaret J. Demars

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

I currently work as an intensive care unit nurse and was asked to paint a mural in our break room. I decided to paint a “family tree” symbolizing unity among the departments. I wanted to create something that promoted peace and serenity. Once the tree was completed, the employees were encouraged to print photos of themselves, their pets, or their families to pin to the tree. This project brought everyone together and was a really fun and engaging activity among the nurses and staff. Now, we can take our breaks and admire something other than the same white walls we …

Wave Of Healing, Annemarie Dittmar Oct 2026

Wave Of Healing, Annemarie Dittmar

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

There is so much hope and healing in nursing. As nurses, we are meant to bring hope and healing to others. To me, the sunrise is symbolic of hope, hope that healing will happen and that there are always things to hope for. The wave of water is symbolic of healing; it is a blue green wave of healing that washes over and provides calming energy and mental clarity. Sunlight and ocean waves bring hope and healing to my own soul. I used a Japanese art form called Kinusaiga, which is a type of painting with fabric. I used …

Ritualidad, Memoria Y Cosmovisión: Ámbitos De La Tradición Sonora Entre Los Mayas Peninsulares, Juan Carrillo González

Journal of Maya Heritage

Ministry With Children: Navigating An Expanding And Deepening River Of Thought And Practice, Ron Bruner Oct 2026

Ministry With Children: Navigating An Expanding And Deepening River Of Thought And Practice, Ron Bruner

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

Parents and church leaders live in a unique moment in the life of the church that creates a powerful opportunity: shaping ministry with children in ways that more faithfully serve God’s ongoing purposes. A convergence of several important ongoing conversations unique to our time connects scholars, practitioners, and parents interested in children's spiritual well-being. These tributaries in thought include (1) an emerging theological vision of children, (2) improved understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual capabilities of children, (3) developing research into the relational ecologies of family, church, and generations, and (4) ongoing developments in children’s ministry leadership, practice, and …
