Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763-1825) was a German writer. Titan (1800-1803) is a four-volume novel in the Bildungsroman (novel of education) tradition. Schoppe is the friend of Albano (the main character), who searches for balance in his life. Schoppe, however, is a cynic and pessimist and dies after he thinks he see his doppelgänger, but who is, in fact, his look-alike friend. Schoppe’s tragic ending reinforces the death of the brothers in Phantastes.

Medical Student and Faculty Lecture Notes

This notebook was written by student Uriah Derickson at Pennsylvania Hospital. The notebook includes notes from a lecture on Midwifery by Dr. William Shippen, Jr. that were taken on April 7, 1798. Shippen was a professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1774-1806. He pioneered courses in midwifery despite opposition, and warned against the use of instruments in childbirth (Penn University Archives & Records Center). The notebook also contains clinical notes written at the Pennsylvania Hospital under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Rush and Dr. Philip Syng Physick. The notebook mentions that on February 26, …

The Radhagovind Sangitsār (or simply Sangitsār) completed in Jaipur around 1800, is a significant musical treatise regarding North Indian classical music. Its special importance lies in its status as one of the very few writings on Hindustani music in the nearly two centuries between the 16^th-17^th Sanskrit and Persian texts and the early modern writings commencing in the decades around 1900. In the interests of disseminating it to interested students and scholars I have digitized chapter seven, on rāga, which is the chapter that has proved to be of most use and interest to musicologists.

Andalusian-born Nicolas Pedrosa is a shaver, surgeon, and male-midwife living in Madrid. One day, after assisting in a birth, Nicolas is returning home when his mule becomes obstreperous and he beats it, rejecting the offered advice of a group of passing friars who counsel patience. Angered by Pedrosa's reaction, the friars sweep on only to be trampled when the mule loses control because of the sound of their bells.
