I introduced grationality at a 2025 sectional meeting of the Mathematical Association of America to install a handle on a concept akin to rationality of numbers, but in a geometric context. More specifically, we define a nice n-gon to be a regular n-gon with side lengths that are natural numbers; then a number n is grational if and only if there exists a nice n-gon such that its area equals the sum of areas of n congruent nice n-gons. A Method For Folding Origami Rectilinear Polygon Extrusions, Everett L. Jin

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

We present a method for generating crease patterns for folding any rectilinear polygon extrusion with a specified uniform minimum edge-to-edge distance, using a rectangular sheet of paper. We demonstrate that the resulting models are efficient and watertight. In addition, they achieve optimal efficiency, meaning they attain the smallest possible scale factor from the original sheet of paper to the folded rectilinear polygon extrusion. Finally, we provide a code implementation of the method. Our study not only facilitates crease pattern design for origami artists but also offers an innovative, art-driven pedagogical tool for inspiring interest in mathematics.

The Set Card Game And Partitions Into Maximal Caps: A Partial Difference Sets Approach, John Polhill

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

More specifically, we revisit the problem of determining the maximum number of cards that can be dealt in the SET® card game without any matches, which is well known to be equivalent to the problem of determining the size of a maximal cap in the affine space AG(4,3). We present a new approach to the problem by using partial difference sets, a method that is equivalent to using strongly regular graphs with a regular automorphism group. The paper includes several possible avenues for future investigations on how partial difference sets might be used in related problems.

The present study analyses the narrative treatment of suicide in Spanish youth fiction television series produced between 2015 and 2024, aiming to identify representation trends in relation to the recommendations for responsible media coverage and their implications for media literacy. The methodology underpinning this study encompasses eight fiction TV series and combines quantitative research, derived from data collection and analysis, with a qualitative component, focusing on the interpretation and analysis of the results. Findings indicate that the representation lacks due caution in depicting the method and location of suicide, which increases the risk of imitation. Although the narratives present alternatives …

Many secondary students enter art classrooms believing that artistic ability is an innate talent rather than a skill that can be developed, often resulting in low confidence, perfectionist tendencies, and a reluctance to take creative risks. This action research study investigated how participation in a crafts-focused bookmaking curriculum affected students' engagement, divergent creativity, artmaking, and mindset in relation to success, failure, and creative risk-taking. Drawing on research in growth mindset, guided mastery, craft education, and artists' books, I designed and implemented a scaffolded curriculum that progressed from structured bookbinding techniques and process-based exploration to conceptually driven artists' books. This study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) investigating the lived experiences of women from vulnerable groups in securing access to housing within the ideological contours of neoliberal capitalism. The inquiry delves into the layers of exclusion, precarity, and structural silencing that frame their trajectories. The study identifies five intersecting identities among vulnerable women: (1) single women; (2) single mothers; (3) survivors of gender-based violence; (4) elderly women; and (5) migrant women laborers. Through an analysis of President Donald Trump's October 2025 travel to Asia, this study investigates the consequences of U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy under his second-term diplomacy. The paper examines three significant diplomatic encounters—the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, bilateral meetings in Japan, and the APEC Summit in South Korea—using a qualitative case study methodology based on role theory and foreign policy analysis. The results show that alliance-centered security cooperation, strategic balancing toward China, and selective economic engagement were U.S. Indo-Pacific goals. Oral history interview with John Barry, who has served as Executive Director of the Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP) since 2008. He was born in Endicott, New York in 1966, grew up in Vestal, and attended high school at Seton Catholic Central in Binghamton before serving in Germany with the United States Army during the early 1980s. When he returned to Broome County in 1987, some of his friends had been affected by HIV/AIDS and, while earning a degree at SUNY Binghamton, Barry became involved in mutual aid efforts to help people affected by the disease. The project emphasized preventive and restorative conservation, focusing on cleaning methods and pigment identification using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The findings provide valuable insights for developing effective preservation strategies and enhance our understanding of the artist’s materials and techniques, thereby contributing significantly to the documentation and advancement of Philippine art history. This study explores the self-identified strategies of asynchronous writing tutors, focusing on how they provide feedback in an online environment. The research addresses the underexplored area of asynchronous writing tutoring, which is often marginalized due to its perceived lack of interpersonal interaction. Through semi-structured interviews and screen recordings of seven writing tutors from three different institutions, the study identifies key strategies employed by tutors. This article provides insight into how an accountability writing group for faculty of color supports faculty writers. It argues that targeted programming for faculty of color can serve as a modest anti-racist intervention into the white supremacist structures that often harm BIPOC faculty and their success in academia. An increasing number of universities are integrating service-learning (SL) to fulfill their social mission. However, sustainable institutionalization of SL remains a persistent challenge. This study identifies and analyzes the factors, actors, and strategies that drive and inhibit SL institutionalization in higher education. Using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic literature review analyzed 52 documents from seven academic databases (including WoS, Scopus, and ERIC). The findings were grouped into three sections: cultural (integration into institutional values/missions), process (articulation within teaching, research, and outreach), and structural dimensions (dedicated support entities). This study explores how writing center consultants develop interpersonal communication (IPC) skills through relational interactions during peer tutoring sessions. Grounded in the theoretical framework of relationality, which views learning as emerging through relationships, I analyze interviews with undergraduate and graduate consultants at a private R1 university. The findings demonstrate that one-on- one conferences foster a broad spectrum of IPC skills, including adaptability, listening, intercultural communication, asking questions, building rapport, giving constructive criticism, setting boundaries, empathizing, and patience. The development of these knowledge and skills is cultivated through collaborative, meaning-making interactions with writers. As such, writing centers emerge as dynamic, relationship-driven …

Writing center tutorial modalities have proliferated in recent years, yet research has not kept pace. Students’ experiences in online writing tutorials remain understudied (Denton, 2017; Hewett & DePew, 2015). Better understanding students’ experiences across session modalities is critical to achieving an inclusive and accessible writing center (Martinez & Olsen, 2015). This study used a mixed-methods, comparative design to determine how students selected, experienced, and perceived the accessibility of synchronous online, in-person, and asynchronous modalities.
