Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta Jul 1974

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta

Dissertations and Theses

Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the Pacific Northwest coastline, but the only evidence of these early visits is a sprinkling of Spanish place names commemorating the intrepid voyagers. The more than four centuries of recorded history since that time are nearly devoid, of references to Spanish-speaking people, especially Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos). Even the heavy influx of Chicano migrant farm workers in the 1950's and 1960's failed to attract the attention of historians or social science researchers. By 1970, the Spanish-language population had become Oregon's largest ethnic minority and was exerting influence in most areas …

Hermann Lietz And The Landerziehungsheime, John Daniel Flanagan Jul 1974

Hermann Lietz And The Landerziehungsheime, John Daniel Flanagan

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis is Hermann Lietz and the Landerziehungsheime.

Its purpose is to discover the sources of the Heime in Lietz's life and thought. It seeks to answer the basic question, "Why did Lietz become an educator and what were his motives in establishing the Landerziehungsheime?" The thesis is divided, generally, into three sections. The first attempts to isolate and reconstruct those events in Lietz's biography which were decisive in the shaping of the educator. The second part investigates certain aspects of the thought of J. G. Fichte, P. de Lagarde end R. Eucken, the three …

The Romance Of Flamenca, John Leonard Ryan Jul 1974

The Romance Of Flamenca, John Leonard Ryan

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Romance of Flamenca is one of the finer though lesser known works of mediaeval literature. In order to bring this thirteenth century masterpiece before a larger literary audience, several scholars have published translations of it in French and in English. An Old Provençal text without a modern translation has not appeared since 1901.

For those American students wishing to read Flamenca in Old Provençal, the scarcity of an available text is further hampered by the lack of an up to date Old Provençal grammar written in English and of an Old Provençal English dictionary. These deficiencies are minimized in …

American Diplomacy And The Mexican Oil Controversy, 1938-1943, Jeremiah J. Ring Jul 1974

American Diplomacy And The Mexican Oil Controversy, 1938-1943, Jeremiah J. Ring

History ETDs

The Mexican Oil Controversy of 1938-1943 developed out of a twenty year quarrel between the foreign-owned petroleum companies and the Mexican government over such issues as the ownership of the subsoil, titles, leases, concessions, and the rights of labor. After a generation of adversary relationships, both of the parties' positions had calcified to the point where there was little room for compromise. While the companies had staked out their position on the defense of the rights of private property, the Mexican government had come to view the conflict as a struggle in the defense of the basic rights of Mexico's …

Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark Jul 1974

Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The subject of money is important in the fiction of Willa Cather. She discusses it frequently and often at great length. In some works it is a major theme.

Despite its importance, a number of Willa Cather's critics have ignored the subject or have given it only cursory mention. Several ·writers, however, have discussed the subject at length. John H. Randall, III, in particular, analyzes it in great detail.· His analysis, however, goes astray at several key points.

This thesis shows that Willa Cather's attitudes toward money were balanced, humane, and consistent. These attitudes can be summarized as follows: (a) …

The Role Of Lutheran Theology In India Today, James Canjanam Gamaliel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As I write, I have in mind the pastors and lay leaders of the nine Lutheran Churches of India. The topics treated in this thesis will be useful for group discussions in congregations so that the people and the pastors will realize the heritage of the Lutheran Church. How the five doctrines chosen are crucial in facing the specific problems and opportunities the church in India is facing will be shown in each chapter. In evaluating the contribution of Lutheran theology, the doctrines promulgated by the Second Vatican Council and some Roman Catholic scholars will al.so, when relevant, be referred …

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study seeks to provide a method which can be used to obtain the information necessary for the design of apartments within the limitations imposed by prevailing market conditions, financial considerations and investor needs. This is accomplished by presenting first, a method of market analysis designed to determine if a market exists in a given locality and delineating specifics about that market which would affect the design. A method is also developed for translating the market conditions into a form which wold indicate whether or not a proposed apartment project is economically feasible and what its probable value would be …

The Emblem Of Print: Manifestations Of An Aesthetic Of Print In The The Spectator, Ferdinand Alexi Hilenski Ii Jun 1974

The Emblem Of Print: Manifestations Of An Aesthetic Of Print In The The Spectator, Ferdinand Alexi Hilenski Ii

Doctoral Dissertations

Marshall McLuhan has disclosed several characteristics of the medium of print pertaining to the ability of print to render reality, among these being linearity, uniformity and infinite repeatability, all indicative of the visual senses. In the Spectator by Addison and Steele this aesthetic of print is particularly visible, in content, form, persona and style. Indeed, the aesthetic of print so pervades the work that it might be said to compose an emblem of print. As such to work is particularly valuable to the twentieth century, when the particular values of a world rendered in terms of print are in danger …

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet Jun 1974

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonsense literature and nonsense poetry have provided release from the shackles of logic for centuries. But the greatest masters of English nonsense are Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.

Nonsense can be defined by the following characteristics: a strong adherence to the concrete in every way possible in order to allow the intellect to be in complete control of its material and thus prevent reference; the elaboration of a pseudo-logic based …

"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson Jun 1974

"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The thesis explores the "presentational immediacy" of the poetry of James Dickey. "Presentational immediacy" is a phrase used by the poet, himself, to describe his attempt to provide a verbal equivalent of an intense experience. He also defines the phrase in stating that his aim is to effect spontaneity and reader involvement in the experience of the poems. This is a relatively difficult objective to accomplish. However, as is shown in the study of the poems in Chapter V, Dickey's handling of the general diction and imagery of the poems does fulfill his objective of presenting an experience in a …

Some Sources Of Puritan Sabbatarianism, John C. Powers Jun 1974

Some Sources Of Puritan Sabbatarianism, John C. Powers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

M. M. Knappen's observation, that the· Puritan doctrine of Sunday was a bit of English originality and perhaps the only important English contribution to the development of Reformed theology in the first century of its history, initiated this study; Some Sources of Puritan Sabbatarianism. Since sabbatarianism was not inherent in the teachings of the Continental Reformers it was necessary to look elsewhere for the Puritan inspiration.

The fifty-year period between 1535 and 1585 was chosen as the area of study because of two significant events that marked the beginning and the end of the period. July, 1537, saw the …

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr. May 1974

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an attempt to combine the disciplines of Asian history and United States diplomatic history in analyzing the 1871 Korean-American Incident. The Incident revolves around the Low-Rodgers expedition to Korea, and the subsequent breakdown of peaceful negotiations into a military clash of arms.

To describe the Incident as merely another example of American "imperialism,'' or as a result of narrow-minded Korean isolationism, is to oversimplify its causes and miss the larger implications that can be learned from it. A basic premise of this paper is that the 1871 Incident is an example of East-West cultural conflict. As such, …

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider May 1974

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the material recorded in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthian congregation, the reader comes into contact with what Paul refers to as charismata, or spiritual gifts. Chapter 14 of this Epistle concentrates on two of these charismata, namely speaking in tongues and prophecy. Both are "utterance gifts", and from Paul's treatment of them, it seems that there is a definite link between them. Since we are currently experiencing an increasing element of "charismatic renewal" within our own denomination, and do not seem able to deal pastorally with it, it will be my purpose in this brief section to delve …

The Venus Image, William Jay Masterson May 1974

The Venus Image, William Jay Masterson

Art & Art History ETDs

The Venus image has been described as the presentation of the obsessive, unreasonable nature of physical desire in a form that ceases to be vulgar and becomes "celestial". This characterization is similar to the major pictorial content of my paintings which deals with the repression of desire for a subtly appealing figure. This study explains and brings into perspective this dominant theme in my work through a description of the pictorial and formal aspects of my paintings and a comparison of my work to the work of four contemporary American painters who have dealt with the female figure in their …

Martin Luther's Concept Of Biblical Interpretation In Historical Perspective, Raymond Larry Shelton May 1974

Martin Luther's Concept Of Biblical Interpretation In Historical Perspective, Raymond Larry Shelton

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The purpose of this study is two-fold: to study the general hermeneutical principles and procedures of Martin Luther, and to develop an understanding of the major hermeneutical influences both upon him and by him. Luther certainly did not precipitate the Reformation in a vacuum, but his revolutionary ideas developed as a result of many historical and theological influences upon his intellectual and spiritual development. Furthermore, Luther provided a hermeneutical watershed from which the other Reformers, as well as many contemporary scholars, drank. His influence upon the hermeneutical development since the sixteenth century has been immeasurable. Thinkers ranging from the positions …

The Colombian Novelist As Critic And Agent Of Social Change, Daniel J. Ritter May 1974

The Colombian Novelist As Critic And Agent Of Social Change, Daniel J. Ritter

American Studies ETDs

The distinction between reality and illusion has been particularly elusive in the New World. Its discovery, conquest and development is a bizarre combination of fact and hope. It is as if the inert reality of this hemisphere were penetrated by some great dreamer to sire a race of men torn between what is and what could, should or might be. This dissertation seeks to discover the tension between reality and illusion as revealed in the contemporary Colombian novel. The study is based upon an analysis of twenty six novels published between 1950 and 1970 and selected because of the authors' …

David Rowland Francis: The American Ambassador To Russia, 1916-1921, Elna Ann Wilson Mayo

Theses & Honors Papers

David Rowland Francis of St.Louis, Missouri was appointed United States ambassador to Russia by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Without question Francis was a well-known, loyal Democrat. Having served as mayor of St. Louis, governor of Missouri, Secretary of the Interior, president of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904,and Democratic "dark horse" for the White House,he was active in local and national politics. His knowledge of Russia, however, was little and unfortunately vague. He had no previous diplomatic experience and had previously refused a diplomatic post to Buenos Aries, Argentina. Yet his appointment to Imperial Russia was approved by the …

Youth: A Part Of, Not Apart From, The Church, Glenn Kopper May 1974

Youth: A Part Of, Not Apart From, The Church, Glenn Kopper

Master of Divinity Thesis

Within the past decade youth have seemingly charged onto center stage in the arena of life in America, and the pace of their "now generation" is one which calls for action. As the church, the body of Christ here on earth, we cannot afford to sit back and wait for something to develop, but rather, we must decide on how to respond to the "adolescent epidemic" and then we must act upon our decision by implementing it. "Leading the young to use their power and vitality responsibly is the biggest task facing today's Christian leaders." That statement might well be …

Paul Tournier's Philosophy Of Counseling As Developed From His Concept Of Person, Laurence H. Wood May 1974

Paul Tournier's Philosophy Of Counseling As Developed From His Concept Of Person, Laurence H. Wood

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

There exists today an increasing interest in the possibility of integrating the fields of psychology and theology for the benefit of man. Such work has already been undertaken by Dr. Paul Tournier. The concepts that Paul Tournier has developed are of particular interest to the Christian community in its inter-personal relationships. While Tournier's concepts are applicable to a broader spectrum, they are nevertheless of particular significance for the Christian community. An understanding of certain of Tournier's concepts and their implementation into one's ministry in the general area of counseling can be of inestimable practical value.

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr May 1974

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Because of those who have taken an extreme position concerning typology, the subject has been either distorted or discarded. In both cases it has been very unfortunate. If it can be established that typology is a valid tool to use in studying the Bible, then "a great door and effectual is opened" to the Bible student . The problem is, has been, and always will be : " there are many adversaries ." The preliminary assumption of the writer was that typology is not unscriptual or dangerous ; rather the misuser of typology is the one that needs to …

The Concept Of Cross-Cultural Identification, Daniel Roy Brewster May 1974

The Concept Of Cross-Cultural Identification, Daniel Roy Brewster

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Apostle Paul was perhaps the greatest missionary who ever lived, and perhaps the greatest teacher, aside from our Lord, of the necessity and the means of identifying oneself to the needs of the Diverse peoples of the non-Christian world in order that he might effectively communicate the "Good News" of God's redemption plan. In his first letter to the fledgling church at Corinth, he succinctly and accurately states what is at once the primary manner, the primary goal and the primary obstacle to that identification. "... I have become all things to all men that I may by all …

A Survey Of The Background And Development Of Aldersgate Graded Curriculum And Its Use In Selected Wesleyan Churches, James Frederick Harbour May 1974

A Survey Of The Background And Development Of Aldersgate Graded Curriculum And Its Use In Selected Wesleyan Churches, James Frederick Harbour

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christian education was given an impetus by the Protestant Reformation by means of men such as Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Calvin, and John Knox. These men established the principle that every person should be able to read the Scriptures in his own language. A believer's reading ability would reinforce his salvation and spiritual growth.
