Christianity And Craft Guilds In Late Medieval England: A Rational Choice Analysis, Gary Richardson Apr 2005

Christianity And Craft Guilds In Late Medieval England: A Rational Choice Analysis, Gary Richardson

Gary Richardson

In late-medieval England, craft guilds simultaneously pursued piety and profit. Why did guilds pursue those seemingly unrelated goals? What were the consequences of that combination? Theories of organizational behavior answer those questions. Craft guilds combined spiritual and occupational endeavors because the former facilitated the success of the latter and vice versa. The reciprocal nature of this relationship linked the ability of guilds to attain spiritual and occupational goals. This link between religion and economics at the local level connected religious and economic trends in the wider world.

Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii Apr 2005

Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii

Thomas Lyons (Thom) Carr III Appl.Sc., CEM

When a sudden on-set emergency or disaster affects a region or the whole country, communities and neighborhoods should plan for the possibility that emergency and other civic services will be disrupted and unavailable (District of Columbia 2003a, 2003b, 2004; Doyle 2004; Siskiyou County Public Health/NorCalBT.com 2004). The event may be severe enough that the routine public health surveillance and monitoring system will be disrupted or the system will not be able to provide data quickly enough to support state and local decisionmaking. A temporary post-disaster system should be planned for and implemented. The epidemiologist supporting the local decision makers must …

Reunion, Linda C. Zemel Mar 2005

Reunion, Linda C. Zemel

Linda Chalmer Zemel

REUNION is about our deepest selves in relationship with each other, an Everyman play in which the characters discuss why, if it's all been done before, we continue to get up in the morning. If you are still-upwardly-striving JJ or even-now-over-intellectualizing Margot contemplating a classy class reunion with an old friend, first you gotta talk about why we stick with the theater of the absurd of our lives.
Just before intermission, Margot and JJ--after all, they are still who they were -- have a rapidly escalating fight on the phone, and when Act II begins, the relationship is up for  …

What Communities Should Do Pre-Event To Support Public Health Post-Event Assessments, Surveillance And Monitoring, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii Feb 2005

What Communities Should Do Pre-Event To Support Public Health Post-Event Assessments, Surveillance And Monitoring, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii

Thomas Lyons (Thom) Carr III Appl.Sc., CEM

[Abstract written March 2008, TLC] Under worst-case planning assumptions used by some major metropolitan areas, a Neighbor-to-Neighbor self-help program model is the primary link between citizens and the professional response personnel of the responsible government agencies.

In the Neighbor-to-Neighbor self-help program model or a Community Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) calls on the citizens in neighborhoods to identify and establish cluster emergency preparedness committees, Cluster Emergency Coordination Centers (CECC) and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). Missing from these plans or what is not articulated is how constant Public Health Post-Event Surveillance, Monitoring and Assessments will be done. Given the worst-case planning …

Spatial And Temporal Variation In Stone Raw Material Provisioning Around The Chivay Obsidian Source., Nicholas Tripcevich, Alex Mackay Feb 2005

Spatial And Temporal Variation In Stone Raw Material Provisioning Around The Chivay Obsidian Source., Nicholas Tripcevich, Alex Mackay

Nicholas Tripcevich, Ph.D.

Research into the prehistoric procurement of widely circulated raw materials provides an opportunity to investigate changes in the mechanisms of exchange through time and the impacts of regional demand on local provisioning systems. Raw material sources are often exploited to meet local and regional demands, and relationships between artefacts at raw material source workshops and local sites can inform archaeologists about the nature of the exploitation of the source on the whole. In this talk we will focus on flaked stone artefacts found at an obsidian source workshop and those found in sites within a day’s travel of the source …

Law's Box: Law, Jurisprudence And The Information Ecosphere, Paul D. Callister Feb 2005

Law's Box: Law, Jurisprudence And The Information Ecosphere, Paul D. Callister

Paul D. Callister

For so long as it has been important to know “what the law is,” the practice of law has been an information profession. Nonetheless, just how the information ecosphere affects legal discourse and thinking has never been systematically studied. Legal scholars study how law attempts to regulate information flow, but they say little about how information limits, shapes, and provides a medium for law to operate.

Part I of the paper introduces a holistic approach to “medium theory”—the idea that methods of communication influence social development and ideology—and applies the theory to the development of legal thinking and institutions. Part …

Traditional Tropes And Familial Incest In Banana Yoshimoto’S Kitchen, Michele Gibney Feb 2005

Traditional Tropes And Familial Incest In Banana Yoshimoto’S Kitchen, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

Kitchen, written in 1983, by Banana Yoshimoto, contains one novella and one short story. The novella is entitled Kitchen and the short story which follows it is called Moonlight Shadow. In Moonlight Shadow, the structure of a Japanese Noh drama enfolds, wherein the ultimate end of the main character is to live on in a semi-incestuous relationship with her dead boyfriend’s brother. In Kitchen, the images that one is assailed by are those of desire coexisting with food, and love contingent on incest. The idea of food as a comfort conflates into that of a woman as comforting.

These two …

The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker Dec 2004

The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

As the use of ‘diaspora’ has proliferated in the last decade, its meaning has been stretched in various directions. This article traces the dispersion of the term in semantic, conceptual and disciplinary space; analyses three core elements that continue to be understood as constitutive of diaspora; assesses claims made by theorists of diaspora about a radical shift in perspective and a fundamental change in the social world; and proposes to treat diaspora not as a bounded entity but as an idiom, stance andclaim.
