Teaching Music Concepts Through Games, Gennie Eldridge Jan 1974

Teaching Music Concepts Through Games, Gennie Eldridge

Honors Theses

The purpose of this Honors Project is to derive games and visual aids to help a child learn different musical concepts. From my own experiences of being a student and from teaching piano, it is my opinion that the more creative and versatile a teacher is, the more a child will learn. By using a little imagination and/or improvising on already well-known games, such as BINGO, any teacher can make his or her teachings more of a learning experience for the child. It is a well-known fact that children dislike practicing, but by presenting different concepts in a way that …

Summary Of Five Garments Created For An Honors Project, Elisabeth Shaw

Honors Theses

The following garments were made for my family as Christmas gifts. They were created to be my honors project for Fall, 1974. Besides containing hard work, imagination, and love, I have created something that can be used and appreciated for years to come.

Personality and taste of the person were taken into consideration as I made the gift. The materials and patterns were selected in relation to how much wear these garments would receive.

The gifts include: 1. An eyelet apron trimmed in pink; 2. An eyelet apron trimmed in blue; 3. A blue velour robe; 4. A cranberry velour …

Arkansas Politics And The Code Duello, Vincent C. Henderson Ii Jan 1974

Arkansas Politics And The Code Duello, Vincent C. Henderson Ii

Honors Theses

Many methods have been found by which two men may solve a dispute between them. The methods can be broadly divided as either violent or nonviolent. Among the violent methods, dueling was considered in the nineteenth century in Arkansas as a proper means of solving disputes concerning politics, honor, and family, as well as trivial matters.

Dueling was not common in Arkansas alone. People practiced it in many states. By 1819 dueling had become a Southern institution. As an institution, dueling had certain rules and regulations. Several books were published on the subject. Among these were An Essay on the …

Medical Conditions In Arkansas During The Civil War, Karen Polk Jan 1974

Medical Conditions In Arkansas During The Civil War, Karen Polk

Honors Theses

The Civil War was a war of great suffering, pain, and ignorance in the medial field and on the battlefield. The Arkansas soldier suffered for lack of medical supplies, medical care, and food. If the fear of being wounded was not enough, the soldier was apt to die either in an unsafe hospital or on the battlefield due to exposure. Contagious diseases spread like wildfire through the camps, and medicines, if available, were scarce and inadequate. Trying to provide for the soldiers was a main aim of the citizens, who established hospitals, and sacrificed commodities for the 'lost cause.' After …

The Techniques Of Impressionism In The Preludes Of Claude Debussy, Janet Duffel Jan 1974

The Techniques Of Impressionism In The Preludes Of Claude Debussy, Janet Duffel

Honors Theses

Claude Debussy, called by Bartok "the greatest composer of our period," was one of the most important composers in the history of piano music. He introduced a new approach to musical composition which is best summed up in an excerpt from a letter written by Debussy in 1885: "I don't think I shall ever be able to put music into a strict mold. I'm not speaking of musical form; its a literary question. I shall always prefer a subject where, somehow, action is sacrificed to feeling. It seems to me that music thus becomes more human and one can then …

Wildness Explored, Charles Cantrell Jan 1974

Wildness Explored, Charles Cantrell

Honors Theses

In undertaking this project our purpose was rather vague. We wanted to make a very general study of man's relationship to his environment from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. Such topics as eatable wild foods, wilderness survival, and the need for wilderness preservation have been investigated. Several books have been read in each of these areas and in addition we have made several field trips. We have looked over three or four proposed wilderness areas in Arkansas and Missouri but have become most familiar with the Caney Creek area in western Arkansas. Besides making several day hikes, we camped …
