Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Centering theory (CT) has been adopted in analyzing 84 zero anaphors in 50 informative texts. It is found that most zero anaphors occur in Continuation state both in English texts (source texts (ST)) and Thai translation (target texts (TT)). Zero anaphors in the TT outnumber those in ST and are found in more environments. In terms of translation, most zero anaphors in source texts remain in the same form in the target texts although some items are translated into different anaphor forms. Results indicate that zero anaphor is used to keep discourse coherence and to refer to the backward-looking center …

The transportation network in the area is not systematically connected to the town itself and, thus, cannot serve a wide-range of community activities. The activities that do take place are not spread evenly across the area according to its integration value. As a consequence, communities cannot …

Urban Dignity - Global Dignity: What Is It? How Do We Achieve It? (Part 1), Evelin Lindner Jan 2014

Urban Dignity - Global Dignity: What Is It? How Do We Achieve It? (Part 1), Evelin Lindner

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Unity in diversity is at the centre of dignity. It means that people of all classes and colors intermingle in a spirit of mutual care and respect. Traditionally, throughout the past millennia, uniformity in division has been practised almost everywhereon the planet: to strengthen their competitive advantage over enemy out-groups, in-groups maintained a strictly unequal domination of higher beings over lesser beings. Unity in diversity is a more complex concept as it requires the readiness and ability to consider everyone else as equal in dignity, and it calls for the skills to enter into dialogue with equals. As long as …

Indigenous Music Mediation With Urban Khmer: Tampuan Adaptation And Survival, Todd Saurman Jan 2014

Indigenous Music Mediation With Urban Khmer: Tampuan Adaptation And Survival, Todd Saurman

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This paper describes some lowland/highland Khmer points of interconnection for indigenous Tampuan communities from the highland Northeast, Cambodia. Tampuan community musicians respond constructively to a Siem Reap tourist cultural show that depicts their indigenous ethnolinguistic group. Tampuan musicians make trips to the urban center of Phnom Penh to represent themselves in a CD recording, a concert, and a TV program. I contend that some community members are expressing strong cultural values as they mediate with the national and urbanculture in spite of a history of Khmerization efforts by lowland Khmer. A strong value of mediation reinforces highland desires to communicate …

Occupy Action! Collective Actions And Emotions In Public Places, Simone Belli Jan 2014

Occupy Action! Collective Actions And Emotions In Public Places, Simone Belli

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In recent times there is an accelerated movement in the privatization of public land. Some representative cases are the names of subway stops and central squares being associated with the brands of large corporations. Consequently the city centers are becoming an ambiguous territory making it unclear what is public and private. Additionally these newly established social practices have consequences and poses questions as where private ground begins (and ends) and how the freedom to use such spaces are affected? The privatization of public land appears to be an encroaching process and standard as similar patterns were found in other European …

Idea Sharing: Assessment In A Cooperative Learning Class, Siti Mina Tamah

PASAA

In Indonesia, it is common to see current classroom practices that incorporate the cooperative learning paradigm. In fact, there is a tendency to regard negatively a classroom without the label of 'cooperative learning' in which students are put into small groups. The current instructional practices then often make use of group work to encourage students to learn from one another in which they help and seek assistance from their fellow students besides from their teacher.

Idea Sharing: The Use Of Read - Share - Act To Promote Extensive Reading, Nisakorn Charumanee

PASAA

"I believe that there are three reasons why we should consider the importance of establishing a culture of reading. First, much of the information available in the world comes in the format of print. Most of the printed materials in the world come in English. In order to help students access more of the information available in English, the teacher must establish a culture of reading."
