Urban Dignity - Global Dignity: What Is It? How Do We Achieve It? (Part 2), Evelin Lindner

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Unity in diversity is at the centre of dignity. It means that people of all classes and colors intermingle in a spirit of mutual care and respect. Traditionally, throughout the past millennia, uniformity in division has been practised almost everywhereon the planet: to strengthen their competitive advantage over enemy out-groups, in-groups maintained a strictly unequal domination of higher beings over lesser beings. Unity in diversity is a more complex concept as it requires the readiness and ability to consider everyone else as equal in dignity, and it calls for the skills to enter into dialogue with equals. As long as …

The Art Museum Propelling City Development: Oslo As A Creative City, Stein Olav Henrichsen

Journal of Urban Culture Research

A new boost in art infrastructure in the Norwegian capital Oslo will have a great impact on contemporary city development, and the important question is how this impact can be used to help build a sound society where democracy, human rights and financial development can prosper, and where conflicts can be discussed and solved in a non violent order. The answer depends on the ability of the institutions to play a relevant part in contemporary core problems and ask: what are societies main challenges, and how can we help solve them? In the further development of art institutions, they will …

Theoretical Review Of Phonics Instruction For Struggling/ Beginning Readers Of English, Pragasit Sitthitikul

PASAA

Learning to read is a complex task for beginners of English. They must coordinate many cognitive processes to read accurately and fluently, including recognizing words, constructing the meanings of sentences and text, and retaining the information read in memory. An essential part of the process for beginners involves learning the alphabetic system, including, letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns, and learning how to apply this knowledge in their reading (National Reading Panel, 2000). Systematic phonics instruction is a way of teaching reading that stresses the acquisition of letter-sound correspondences and their use to read and spell words (Harris & Hodges, 1995). …

Fluency in reading refers to appropriate reading speed, accurate word recognition, appropriate phrasing, and appropriate expression when reading orally. Reader's Theater (RT) is a reading instructional method that requires readers to read aloud from scripts. It is recognized as a method that helps develop reading fluency of L1 and ESL/EFL learners of different levels of proficiency. RT also incentivizes and persuades learners to re-read the same text several times. This paper will explore the benefits of RT as well as suggestions about how it …

Idea Sharing: Using Shakespeare's Measure For Measure As A Means Of Developing Different Modes Of Student Authorship, Stella Smyth

PASAA

Shakespeare's Measure for Measure is a critique of King James I's concept of an absolute monarchy, in his constitutional treatise, namely Basilikon Doron. In the light of modern reader response theories, and with due regard to Renaissance literacy practices, I show how Shakespeare's authorial method of appropriating Basilikon Doron can be emulated through the design of writing activities for advanced EAP classes, or as part of university English language and literature syllabuses.

Manipulation: Jan Švankmajer's Animation Technique And Criticism On Civilization, Haruka Kawakami Jul 2014

Manipulation: Jan Švankmajer's Animation Technique And Criticism On Civilization, Haruka Kawakami

Journal of Urban Culture Research

"Manipulation" is an important concept in the films of Jan Švankmajer, an influential Czech surrealist filmmaker. As a surrealist artist who aims for the liberation of humans from any kind of restraint, he insists that people should resist all kinds of societal manipulations. His insistent exposure of manipulation can be seen as a protest against its concealment as a convention. However, the idea of manipulation has more ambiguous meanings in his films. Švankmajer brings inorganic objects to life through careful manipulations, such as stop-motion animation, while applying the same techniques to humans to disrupt their identities. Consequently, both humans and …

Arts Education In Thailand: Why It Matters, Cristina Penn Schoonmaker Jan 2014

Arts Education In Thailand: Why It Matters, Cristina Penn Schoonmaker

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The humanities, especially the visual arts, are often neglected at Thai universities because they are perceived as rarely yielding tangible results. This paper aims to demonstrate that learning to decode and talk about a painting not only require high level cognitive, visual, and language skills, but also extensive contextual knowledge, which only a background in the humanities can offer. The author analyzes several works of art as well as discusses modern aesthetics to argue that the arts are an integral part of the human experience, and therefore, should be included in general education courses at the tertiary level.

Rewriting Genders, Revising Genres: Reading Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" As A Female Bildungsroman, Phacharawan Boonpromkul Jan 2014

Rewriting Genders, Revising Genres: Reading Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" As A Female Bildungsroman, Phacharawan Boonpromkul

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Built on the storyline of the traditional fairy tale "Bluebeard," Angela Carter's short story "The Bloody Chamber" (1979) contains striking alterations in the use of the first-person narrator, ambivalent and complex characterisation, explicit sexual description and a revised ending; all of which have given rise to heated arguments among feminist scholars and literary critics. This paper relies on a close reading analysis and engages in the ongoing discussions by considering the problematic categorisation of the story—as a fairy tale, a pornographic fiction, a gothic horror, and especially as a bildungsroman novel—in relation to several gender aspects such as power relations …

Multiple Meanings Of The Pronoun /Haw/ In Tai Lue, Kittinata Rhekhalilit Jan 2014

Multiple Meanings Of The Pronoun /Haw/ In Tai Lue, Kittinata Rhekhalilit

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In many languages, personal pronouns are used to imply characteristics of speakers and social relationships between participants (Agha 2007). This is particularly true of members of the Tai language family, such as Zhuang (Kullavanijaya 2009), Standard Thai (Cooke 1968; Palakornkul 1972; Simpson 1997), Standard Lao (Enfield 1966; Compton 2002), Kham Mueang and Tai Lue (Rhekhalilit 2010). A number of studies of Southwestern Tai languages have found that the first person plural pronoun /haw/ or /raw/ can be used in several contexts, apart from referring to a group of speakers. For example, the pronoun /raw/ in Standard Thai indexes intimacy between …

Layers Of Chinese Loanwords In Proto-Southwestern Tai As Evidence For The Dating Of The Spread Of Southwestern Tai, Pittatawat Pittayaporn

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The current ethno-linguistic landscape of mainland Southeast Asia is a result of the spread of Tai speakers from southern China. This study examines Chinese loanwords in Proto-Southwestern Tai, the hypothetical ancestor of all modern Southwestern Tai varieties and proposes a dating of the spread of Southwestern Tai languages. By comparing the reconstructed Proto-Southwestern Tai forms with corresponding Chinese forms, four layers of Chinese loanwords existed in Proto-Southwestern Tai, namely Pre-Later Han, Later Han Chinese, Early Middle Chinese, and Late Middle Chinese layers. These layers indicate that Proto-Southwestern Tai was in contact with Chinese at least until the Tang era. In …

Proto-Karen (*K-Rjana) Fauna, Theeraphan Luangthongkum Jan 2014

Proto-Karen (*K-Rjana) Fauna, Theeraphan Luangthongkum

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Even though the reconstruction of Proto-Karen has already been attempted and presented in different ways by a few linguists, some serious disagreements among them on some major points have been found. The research objective, here, is to offer a new look at the Proto-Karen phonology and lexicon. However, the emphasis of this paper is on the reconstruction of Proto-Karen fauna. A wordlist consisting of 2,000 items with English and Thai glosses divided into 21 sections based on semantic fields was devised. The data on the six Karenic languages spoken in Thailand, i.e. Pa-O (two varieties), Kayan, Kayah, Kayaw, Pwo (two …

Segment Timing In Twelve Southeast Asian Languages, Yanin Sawanakunanon Jan 2014

Segment Timing In Twelve Southeast Asian Languages, Yanin Sawanakunanon

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In several studies the duration of segments (i.e. consonants and vowels) is measured to classify languages according to their speech rhythm. This research investigates whether Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a new method of analyzing segment-timing parameters for language classification, can be used to classify twelve Southeast Asian languages according to their timing patterns. The twelve Southeast Asian languages examined are Malay, Cebuano, Standard Thai, Southern Thai, Tai Yuan, Vietnamese, Hmong, Mien, Burmese, Sgaw Karen, Mon and Khmer. Spontaneous speech from three speakers from each language was recorded. Vocalic, consonantal, voiced, and unvoiced intervals of 30 seconds of speech, not including …

New Visual Dialogues And New Art Projects With A Social And Meliorist Goal In The Urban Space And At Sea, Else Marie Bukdahl

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the relationship between Richard Shusterman's pragmatist aesthetics and several art projects by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Marit Benthe Norheim and SUPERFLEX. A core element in Shusterman's aesthetics is that the bodily and mental dimensions of human beings are inseparable. He has also changed philosophy in such a way as to make it better serve human life. These three visualize basic elements of Shusterman's aesthetics, particularly with regard to embodied creation and perception, the interactive dialogue with the viewer and the surroundings, the unification of art and experience as well as the hope of …
