Marriage Or Career? Domestic Ideology In George Gissing's The Odd Women, Kuo-Wei Hsu Jul 2005

Marriage Or Career? Domestic Ideology In George Gissing's The Odd Women, Kuo-Wei Hsu

English Theses - Archive

Although George Gissing is acclaimed for his progressive thoughts on liberating women from patriarchy by establishing financial independence, some critics challenge such praise for Gissing by arguing that he is still confined within patriarchal thinking because he still adheres to domestic ideology, which advocates that women should stay within the domestic sphere and be protected from corruption of the outside world. The discussion of this thesis is divided into two main parts: first, despite their efforts to fight for freedom in marriage, women fail to escape from the control of patriarchy because through domestic ideology patriarchy still drives women back …

Effects Of Tattoos On Perceptions Of Credibility And Attractiveness, John S. Seiter, Sarah Hatch

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined the effects of tattooing on perception of a male's and a female's credibility and attractiveness. 74 undergraduates viewed a photograph of a tattooed or nontattooed male or female model and then rated dimensions of the models' credibility and attractiveness. This study compared the effectiveness of 2 types of patriotic messages with a warmth/ ingratiation message and a control condition on restaurant tipping. Two female food servers waited on 100 parties eating dinner. When diners were finished with their meals, servers left them 1 of 4 messages on their checks: “Have a Nice Day,”“God Bless America,”“United We Stand,” or no message. Results indicated that parties who received the “United We Stand” message left significantly higher tips than did those receiving no message or the “Have a Nice Day” message. The Parody Of Romance, Tara Donalson Jun 2005

The Parody Of Romance, Tara Donalson

English Theses - Archive

In Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy, and Popular Literature, Janice A. Radway studies the romance formula, identifying a set of generic criteria which offer its readers escapist purposes. Christian writers have established their own formula on the romance. In my thesis, I look at the parallel formulas found in secular and inspirational romance fiction, searching how inspirational romance evangelizes and gives spiritual instruction to its readers. Secular romance creates stories which explore the idea of everlasting love. They create a relationship between a flawed hero and innocent heroine who fall in love at first sight; out of this imperfect relationship …

Consumer Persuasion: The Use Of Evidence When Negotiating The Price Of A New Automobile, John S. Seiter, Debora L. Seiter Apr 2005

Consumer Persuasion: The Use Of Evidence When Negotiating The Price Of A New Automobile, John S. Seiter, Debora L. Seiter

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined whether consumers’ use of evidence affected the price at which car salespersons offered to sell a vehicle. Two versions of a message–one containing evidence about the wholesale/invoice price of a vehicle and the other containing no evidence–were e-mailed to 134 sales managers at different Toyota dealerships. The prices offered by salespersons were collected and analyzed. Results indicated that sales managers who had received messages with evidence offered to sell the vehicle for a significantly lower price than did sales managers who received no evidence. These results, their implications, and avenues for future research are discussed.

Audience Perceptions Of Candidates’ Appropriateness As A Function Of Nonverbal Behaviors Displayed During Televised Political Debates, John S. Seiter, Harry Weger Jr.

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Compared to televised debates using a single-screen format, such debates using a split screen presenting both debaters simultaneously show viewers the nonverbal reactions of each debater's opponent. The authors examined how appropriate or inappropriate such nonverbal behaviors are perceived to be. Students watched one of four versions of a televised debate. One version used a single-screen format, showing only the speaker, whereas the other three versions used a split-screen format in which the speaker's opponent displayed constant, occasional, or no nonverbal disagreement with the speaker. Students then rated the debaters' appropriateness. Analysis indicated that the opponent was perceived to be …

Topics In Media: Video Gaming As A Cultural Practice, Katrina Mcneely Farren

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Welcome to Topics in Media: Video Gaming as a Cultural Practice. This project and resulting course grew out of an intense apprehension I have had about the gaming practices of my 11 year-old sons, both avid gamers who like to spend every waking hour playing video games on their PlayStation, computer, or Xbox. They began their gaming career at the age of 4 installing and playing educational games on the computer, but as they have grown older, their preferred genre of gaming has become first-person shooter (FPS) games, all of which tend to be intense and violent in nature. As …

Emotionally intense messages were more positively associated with attitude change than were those with low emotional intensity, but no interaction effects or main effects for color were found.
