The Effect Of Compliments On Tipping Behavior In Hair Styling Salons, John S. Seiter, Eric Dutson
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study examined the role of compliments on tipping behavior in hairstyling salons. Two female hair stylists cut and styled 115 customers' hair and either complimented or did not compliment the customers while interacting. Results indicated that hair stylists received significantly higher tips when complimenting their customers than when not complimenting them. These results and their implications are discussed.

Not long ago, one of the author's students told him, “I won't be able to make it to your class today. I have to study for a test in another course. Will I miss anything important?” The author, of course, had heard this excuse before, as many of us probably have. What made this interaction more amusing was what, by coincidence, the student was going to miss that day: a discussion on analyzing and adapting to audiences. Had she attended the class, we wonder if she would understand the negative ways in which her excuse might be interpreted by a …
"Commies And Queers": Narratives That Supported The Lavender Scare, Holly S. Heatley
"Commies And Queers": Narratives That Supported The Lavender Scare, Holly S. Heatley
History Theses - Archive
In the early 1950s, the perceived threat of communists and homosexuals loomed large over the United States. The U.S. press presented narratives that portrayed communists and homosexuals in remarkably similar language that easily merged. The U.S. public viewed the two groups as equal in status, kind, and objective. The twin menaces reinforced one another and elicited an equivalent response. These narratives and the perceptions they fostered set the stage for the purge of homosexuals from the federal government known as the Lavender Scare. While the Red Scare and Lavender Scare were originally intertwined, legislators and the federal security apparatus continued …

Louisiana Identity On Trial: The Superior Court Case Of Pierre Benonime Dormenon, 1790-1812, Erica Robin Johnson
History Theses - Archive
Louisiana and Saint-Domingue have intertwined histories with a number of similarities and periods of various interactions, most notably during the Haitian Revolution from 1791-1804 and the flight of refugees from Cuba from 1805-1810. Usually the exchanges of goods, people, and ideas between the two French lands were one-way, from Saint-Domingue to Louisiana. Understanding the pasts of each region and the significance of relations between the two colonies seems daunting without a point of reference. The Superior Court Case of Pierre Benonime Dormenon demonstrates how the combination of larger events within the western hemisphere influenced the reception of immigrants from the …

Shades Of Scarlett: Cultural Images Of Historical Southern Women, Gail Nash Tunnell
Shades Of Scarlett: Cultural Images Of Historical Southern Women, Gail Nash Tunnell
English Theses - Archive
The white antebellum/Civil War-era woman occupies an evolving archetypal status in American cultural consciousness throughout the twentieth century. In 1936, extending a one-hundred year tradition of featuring Southern belles in novels, Margaret Mitchell published Gone with the Wind; in 1996, Charles Frazier published Cold Mountain. Both of these novels offer striking images of the Southern belle as well as the "poor white" Southern woman. My paper will compare the images and interactions of upper and lower class female characters, considering the earlier stereotypical characteristics given to each group, the homosocial relationships between the two groups, and the revision of both, …

Giovanni Battista Ramusio And The History Of Discoveries: An Analysis Of Ramusio's Commentary, Cartography, And Imagery In Delle Navigationi Et Viaggi, Jerome R. Barnes
History Dissertations - Archive
Giovanni Battista Ramusio was a sixteenth-century Venetian scholar who was very interested in the studies of geography and cartography. Ramusio's keen interest was in the findings of travelers and explorers to all parts of the world during the Age of Discoveries. He is remembered for his compilation of travel narratives entitled Delle Navigationi et Viaggi. Navigationi et Viaggi is a massive work in three volumes that includes a comprehensive collection of travel narratives translated into Italian and published by Giunti in Venice. While this was a major accomplishment, Ramusio's original commentaries on these travels and on the history of exploration …

Mapping The "Red Menace": British And American News Maps In The Early Cold War Period, 1945-1955, Jeffrey Paul Stone
History Dissertations - Archive
This study examines maps published by the national news press in Britain and the United States from 1945 to 1955. The author analyzes these maps to discern similarities and differences in how British and American news journals put foreign affairs into geographic perspective. Such maps were a valuable medium for educating news readers of developing Cold War geopolitical events, while simultaneously shaping public opinion of foreign places. And they reveal much about a country's world view.
Death Of The American Dream: The Revolutionary Meaning Of Infant Mortality And Mourning In Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette, Tracey-Lynn Clough
Death Of The American Dream: The Revolutionary Meaning Of Infant Mortality And Mourning In Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette, Tracey-Lynn Clough
English Theses - Archive
This thesis explores the broader implications of Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette through an acknowledgment and assessment of a male audience. The Coquette is a seduction narrative that is linked through form and tradition to Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple and William Hill Brown's The Power of Sympathy. However, this project examines the unique strategies Foster employs to make literary meaning outside the space of domesticity. The Coquette's social and political aims can be located in the textual divergences from similar texts of the period. Foster refuses to make narrative apologies, shifts the point of view, and appears determined to more …
Beyond Good And Evil: Sister Leopolda's Traumatic Will To Power, Alisha Stafford Feitosa
Beyond Good And Evil: Sister Leopolda's Traumatic Will To Power, Alisha Stafford Feitosa
English Theses - Archive
This is an in-depth analysis of one of Louise Erdrich's most extraordinary characters, Sister Leopolda. I examine Leopolda first as a trauma victim who has suffered the loss of family, witnessed the death and assault of various friends, struggled with her mixed heritage, and fought to establish herself in a world where Indians were rapidly losing their power, their land, and their lives. Second, I use Friedrich Nietzsche's views of power to illustrate how Leopolda's seemingly random and fanatical exploits are actually examples of her will to power. Because of her disturbing past, Leopolda must struggle to survive; her astonishing …

Down And Back Again: A Swimmer's Body Moves Through Feminism, Young Adult Sport Literature And Film, Michelle Renee Sanders
English Dissertations - Archive
Contemporary material feminism is interested in finding new ways of writing and liberating women's bodies in literature, and some of these feminists are looking at sport literature to do so. Down and Back Again: A Swimmer's Body Moves Through Feminism, Young Adult Sport Literature and Film analyzes the ways in which women are represented and/or embodied in feminist theoretical texts, sport photographs, young adult sport fiction and film. By examining these texts in relation to each other and in relation to my own experience in sport, this dissertation creates a circular and recursive story, much like swimming laps, as I …

Freeze-Frame: Time And Vision In Three Early Welty Stories, Barbara L. Coots
English Theses - Archive
Eudora Welty's early short stories provide a fitting career transition from photographer to writer. In particular, her creative figuration of time--enriched by her employment of photographic vision--graces her earliest collection, A Curtain of Green. In this paper, I apply a critical approach based on the narrative theory of time by Paul Ricoeur to discover meaning in three of those stories: "A Curtain of Green," "The Key," and "A Memory." Using Ricoeur's proposition of three mimetic stages--prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration--and taking the liberty to peer through the camera lens, I identify a unifying theme of feminine emergence that finds its definition …
Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson
Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson
English Theses - Archive
Despite the efforts of readers, writers and cultural critics, the fact remains that romance and the Western genres are considered low art. The real impetus behind this paper is not whether or not or even why they are considered low art. The important questions for me, the cultural critic, are: Why are these books so popular? What do they offer their readers? In considering their popular appeal, I think the implication of gender is the most illuminating piece of the puzzle. In this thesis, I will analyze the gender-specific fantasies offered in the Western romance novel and the popular Western, …

The present study examined the role of ingratiation on tipping behavior in restaurants. In the study, 2 female food servers waited on 94 couples eating dinner, and either complimented or did not compliment the couples on their dinner selections. Results indicated that food servers received significantly higher tips when complimenting their customers than when not complimenting them. These results and their implications are discussed.
Deception And Emotion: The Effects Of Motivation, Relationship Type, And Sex On Expected Feelings Of Guilt And Shame Following Acts Of Deception In United States And Chinese Samples, John S. Seiter, Jon Bruschke
Deception And Emotion: The Effects Of Motivation, Relationship Type, And Sex On Expected Feelings Of Guilt And Shame Following Acts Of Deception In United States And Chinese Samples, John S. Seiter, Jon Bruschke
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study explored whether people expect to experience guilt and shame following acts of deception, and whether such expectations are mediated by the deceivers' motivation, culture, sex, and/or the type of relationship between the deceiver and deceived. Students from China and the United States imagined themselves in several deception scenarios and rated the degree to which they would expect to experience guilt and shame following the deception. The scenarios depicted messages told for different reasons (e.g., to avoid conflict, to appear better) and with various relational partners (e.g., friends, spouses, strangers). Results indicated that motive, culture, and relationship affect emotional …

Perception And Presentation: Mythological Imagery And The Female Gaze In Italian Renaissance Art, Victoria Ehrlich
Perception And Presentation: Mythological Imagery And The Female Gaze In Italian Renaissance Art, Victoria Ehrlich
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
Ostensibly, it would seem that during the Renaissance, subjects of mythological origin in the visual arts were almost exclusively created with the male patron in mind. While this is a highly visible trend, it is important to remember that women, too, were spectators of art steeped in mythological imagery. Cassoni and spalliere were marriage chests and wall panels customarily commissioned for wedding rituals of the era and were often painted with such stories. To determine how the female gaze differed from its male counterpart in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, paintings meant for the eyes of a specific couple are …

Is This Her Fault Or Mine?: An Examination Of The Overregulation Of Sexuality In Measure For Measure As An Argument Against Early Modern Anti-Theatricalism, Heidi Nicole Tesch
Is This Her Fault Or Mine?: An Examination Of The Overregulation Of Sexuality In Measure For Measure As An Argument Against Early Modern Anti-Theatricalism, Heidi Nicole Tesch
English Theses - Archive
The early modern anti-theatricalist movement sought to permanently close the playhouses, arguing that theaters breed immorality through their association with prostitution and the female body. This thesis examines how Shakespeare's Measure for Measure reappropriates these symbols in an argument against the anti-theatricalist movement, as the overregulation of sexuality mimics the overregulation of the theater. The first section examines the overregulation of prostitution in early modern society and in the play. The second section looks at the resistance to excessive regulation of female bodies that were portrayed as weak and unable to resist sin. The final section evaluates the theatricality of …

Throughout the history of the United States, natural resources have played key roles in determining where towns are formed, and when towns will die. For just as long, waterways, roadways, and railroads have played an equally important role in determining the location and success of many towns. This thesis builds on these two broad themes—resources and transportation—to examine how Rockdale, Texas was able to become the most powerful town in southern Milam County, and successfully compete with Cameron, Texas for dominance in Milam County. Cameron was the established county seat in Milam County when in 1873, the International & Great …
Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard
Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard

Slave women resisted being sexually dominated by white men, by refusing to accept that their lives were beyond their control. By examining cases of slave women who resisted white sexually assertive men, I will display how women slave women resisted the status of sexual subjugation, and instead used their sexuality to manipulate situations to improve their quality of life. Slave women were not immune to the sexual corruption in the South, but they used their circumstances to provide themselves with a healthier lifestyle. Based upon a slave woman's response to the sexual advances of whites, one can determine that there …
Hold Your Tongue: Female Speech And Male Anxieties In Early Modern England, Lindsey Nicole Lanzisero
Hold Your Tongue: Female Speech And Male Anxieties In Early Modern England, Lindsey Nicole Lanzisero
English Theses - Archive
For early Modern England, containing female speech was essential to maintaining order. Through their speech, women could raise questions about and subvert patriarchal power. The frequency of this trope shows that there was a great apprehension about what speech and the tongue could accomplish. The female tongue was used as a metaphor for many problems and issues within the culture. This thesis analyzes two body politic metaphors in which the female tongue as a character wreaks havoc on the social body. Thomas Tomkis and William Averell utilize this metaphor in very different ways. Tomkis uses comedy to communicate with rhetorical …
