African-American Women And Social Networks: Changing The World Through Organizing, Sloan Cargill

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

In the mainstream historical narrative of American social justice movements and organizing, African-American women and their work have too often been marginalized and forgotten, despite the crucial work that they have done. This is a study of African-American Women's social networks and African-American women committed to social change. This study focuses on the lives and works of Mary Church Terrell, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Dorothy I. Height, and their respective work with the National Association of Colored Womens Club and National Council of Negro Women. While focused on these women and these organizations, the study also highlights …

This places libraries near the end of the total information lifecycle, acting in the roles of secondary distributors and collectors. By better …

Sister Act: Margaret Walker And Eudora Welty, Carolyn J. Brown Mar 2015

Sister Act: Margaret Walker And Eudora Welty, Carolyn J. Brown

Study the South

At the end of their lives, in the 1980s and ’90s, both Margaret Walker and Eudora Welty were recognized several times by their hometown and state for their long careers and bodies of work. The paths they traveled to reach this intersection of common recognition were quite different, however. Almost exact contemporaries -— Welty lived from 1909-2001 and Walker from 1915-1998 -— they share similar timelines and histories, both having lived through the Depression, World War II, and the civil rights movement. But as one was white and one was black, their stories are very different, as are their paths …

A Man Of This Time: Memory And Sheriff Bell’S First-Person Narratives In Cormac Mccarthy’S No Country For Old Men, Marie-Reine Pugh Mar 2015

A Man Of This Time: Memory And Sheriff Bell’S First-Person Narratives In Cormac Mccarthy’S No Country For Old Men, Marie-Reine Pugh

BYU English Symposium

Critics often focus on the violence in Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men. But the function of memory in Sheriff Bell’s first-person narratives has yet to be examined. Bell may claim to be defeated by the events of the story and the changing times, but the structure of the novel bespeaks a greater importance: his voice marks the beginning and ending of the novel, of each new chapter. His narratives reveal the struggle between his collective and personal memories. In the end, Bell is able to settle in a less conflicted place mediated by his closest relations—his family—where he …

"That Lady, Sir, Is Her Own Mistress": Evelina's Condemnation Of Rape Culture, Rose Hadden Mar 2015

"That Lady, Sir, Is Her Own Mistress": Evelina's Condemnation Of Rape Culture, Rose Hadden

BYU English Symposium

Fanny Burney’s 18th Century novel Evelina is a canny critique of rape culture and the pervasive assumption of female consent. Evelina navigates a social world in which she nominally has the right to say no to anyone in any matter regarding her own body, but where that right is consistently undermined by social punishment, victim blaming, and deliberate ignorance. Earlier scholars have characterized Evelina’s compliance as a flaw in her character, a result of her lack of confidence and experience, but I contest that Burney’s text clearly absolves Evelina herself of all guilt. Burney instead condemns the society that would …

American Masculinity As Presented By Walt Whitman, Corinn Pratt Mar 2015

American Masculinity As Presented By Walt Whitman, Corinn Pratt

BYU English Symposium

As a homosexual Romantic poet neither Walt Whitman nor his work would immediately come to mind as particularly masculine. However, through a brief historical look at what Whitman was learning about as well as a close reading at some of the text it is clear that Whitman paints a very masculine picture. Whitman uses the sexual act as a way to understand what it means to be a man with himself at the helm. Within “Children of Adam” is Whitman uses this ultimate fulfillment of gender relations to explore masculinity and ultimately paints himself as the embodiment of masculinity.

William Cecil, Lord Burghley, And Managing With The Men-Of-Business, Norman L. Jones Feb 2015

William Cecil, Lord Burghley, And Managing With The Men-Of-Business, Norman L. Jones

History Faculty Publications

Michael Graves taught us to think of parliamentary management done through the parliamentary ‘men-of-business’, gentlemen with close ties to powerful men in the privy council. This article asks how ‘men-of-business’ were managed by Elizabeth's head manager, Lord Burghley. Choosing justices of the peace was a complex, fraught activity, and one which Lord Burghley did with a great deal of care. However, despite his best efforts to have only men of probity and proper religious inclinations, he was hampered by local concerns. Managing the men-of-business meant careful awareness of their places, their connections, and their independence. Burghley was managing shared governance, …

The Louvain Library And U.S. Ambition In Interwar Belgium, Tammy M. Proctor Jan 2015

The Louvain Library And U.S. Ambition In Interwar Belgium, Tammy M. Proctor

History Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the ordeal that became the ‘Louvain Library Controversy' in order to demonstrate competing visions of postwar memory and reconstruction that emerged in the 1920s. As a country trying to mediate between the claims of its larger neighbors (Germany, France, and Britain), Belgium provides an excellent window into the climate of postwar Europe and US intervention. I argue that the controversies that surrounded the Louvain Library reconstruction reflect three main themes that plagued European–US relations in the 1920s: first, US pretensions as Europe’s cultural protector; second, US economic power over debt and reparation questions; and last, the question …

Teaching/Writing Workshop: A Critical Memoir Of Training Teacher Candidates In Developmental Composition, Chere Harden Blair Jan 2015

Teaching/Writing Workshop: A Critical Memoir Of Training Teacher Candidates In Developmental Composition, Chere Harden Blair

English Dissertations - Archive

I began by attempting to fill a gap I observed in the preparation of the novice teachers whom I supervised. I created a teaching apprenticeship program in order to give preservice teachers opportunities to enact the theories and methods of writing instruction that I had taught them. The more I read and researched, the more I uncovered important gaps in those theories and methods.Through narrative and critical self-study, I explore my own teaching life, my work with both struggling college writers and teachers-in-training, and my attempts to navigate the complex institutional forces that can frustrate innovation. Ultimately, I suggest that …

Constructing Mothering Performances: The Motherhood Ideal In Caldecott And Newbery Winners, 1980-2014, Dana Mccullough Brewer Jan 2015

Constructing Mothering Performances: The Motherhood Ideal In Caldecott And Newbery Winners, 1980-2014, Dana Mccullough Brewer

English Dissertations - Archive

This project examines representations of motherhood in Caldecott and Newbery winners from 1980-2014 and is informed by feminist literary theory, juvenile literary theory, and motherhood studies. While motherhood studies are evolving to consider egalitarian ideas of motherhood and multiple definitions of motherhood, many Caldecott and Newbery Medal winners present a traditional (and antiquated) motherhood ideal in which maternal figures tend to domestic duties and provide selfless nurturing of children. This objectification depersonalizes, essentializes, and stereotypes motherhood. Diverse mothering characters and practices do materialize in some texts but are often regulated by the motherhood ideal. In Chapter 2, I define the …

The Performing Mother: Maternal Ethics Beyond Embodiment, Charles Hicks Jan 2015

The Performing Mother: Maternal Ethics Beyond Embodiment, Charles Hicks

English Dissertations - Archive

The rich and diverse history of maternal thought is at once a response to the Western philosophical tradition's relegation of the maternal to the material abject, as well as a renegotiation of the maternal body as a site of empowerment capable of destabilizing the foundations of the symbolic economy. Understanding the material and historical conditions that subject these bodies and work to construct maternity, as well as their mediating position to authentic ethical activity, reveals that maternity offers a salient schemata for, not only viewing the fundamental operations of power, but the possibilities of ethical interaction. This study focuses on, …

Creating Myself: Friendship As Black Women's Liberation In Toni Morrison's Sula And Alice Walker's The Color Purple, India Renee Miles Jan 2015

Creating Myself: Friendship As Black Women's Liberation In Toni Morrison's Sula And Alice Walker's The Color Purple, India Renee Miles

English Theses - Archive

The talking book trope, begun in the era of and with the authors of slave narratives, firmly establishes a literary tradition for black writers that continues today. Contemporary authors employ this rhetorical device in order to prove the humanity of those of African descent, express a lack of familiarity with the dominant power structure that seeks to disenfranchise the Other, and to illustrate one method of entry into a hegemonic social structure. Toni Morrison's Sula and Alice Walker's The Color Purple fit into this trope, with varying degrees of success. In both texts, the relational mode of friendship between the …

Realizing The Virtual: Constructing And Embodying Cyberspace In Gibson's Sprawl, Matt Underwood Jan 2015

Realizing The Virtual: Constructing And Embodying Cyberspace In Gibson's Sprawl, Matt Underwood

English Theses - Archive

While the term “cyberspace” first appears in William Gibson’s 1980’s Sprawl series, it arises from a culmination of information and communication technology and cybernetic theory development spanning the majority of the twentieth century. Further, the notion of cyberspace has existed and functioned since the advent of language and tool use and has always reached a global population of users. The recent recognition of cyberspace and its coinage occur as a result of how contemporary technology allows for much more instantaneous and extensive interaction across rapidly increasing distances and user bases. All media and technology, meaning all cyberspace operations, serve as …

In Another Time With (An)Other Race: Representations Of Race And National Narratives In Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim And Fallout 3, Christopher M. Simpson Jan 2015

In Another Time With (An)Other Race: Representations Of Race And National Narratives In Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim And Fallout 3, Christopher M. Simpson

English Theses - Archive

The video games Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 provide simulations of systems of racial marginalization within the context of competing narratives of nation. By utilizing Ian Bogost’s concept of unit operations in concert with postcolonial theorists Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak it is possible to see how these games perpetuate discourses of the human Western Self and the non-human racial Other. Despite the limitations in the simulation presented in these games, they reflect how video games offer the potential for simulating real-life systems of discrimination and marginalization.

The General Cinema Northpark I & Ii: A Case Study Of A Third Generation Movie Theater, Jeremy Floyd Spracklen Jan 2015

The General Cinema Northpark I & Ii: A Case Study Of A Third Generation Movie Theater, Jeremy Floyd Spracklen

History Theses - Archive

The purpose of this thesis is to present a typology of movie exhibition eras and then explore one of those eras in greater detail by studying a specific market and theater within that market. This methodology allows for influential industrial, social, and economic trends to be tracked before, during, and after the operational life of what is identified as a third generation movie theater. By choosing a single theater as a case study for this thesis, national shifts in business practices and economics are examined in order to study how these affected theaters at a micro level.

Representations Of The Holocaust In Texas World History Textbooks From 1947 To 1990, Ryan N. Abt Jan 2015

Representations Of The Holocaust In Texas World History Textbooks From 1947 To 1990, Ryan N. Abt

History Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study was to analyze the topic of the Holocaust as represented in the World History textbooks adopted by the state of Texas from the adoption cycle of 1947 to the 1984 adoption cycle. Texas textbooks were chosen due to the state's influence in the textbook industry due to its population and adoption process. The textbooks are analyzed as cultural artifacts which, when analyzed, can give a deeper understanding of the society into which they were produced. The textbooks were analyzed in relation to Holocaust scholarship and Holocaust related cultural events and productions which were relevant to …
