Never Mind Grendel! Can Beowulf Conquer The 21st-Century Guilt Trip?, Stephen Asma
Never Mind Grendel! Can Beowulf Conquer The 21st-Century Guilt Trip?, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The writer casts doubt on whether the emasculated Beowulf put forward by J. R. R. Tolkien and in the recent movie version of the story transcends and nullifies the heroic original. He suggests that both Beowulfs may be necessary.
El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman
El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman
Emma R. Norman
LA AUTORA EXPLORA CÓMO LOS CONCEPTOS DEL "YO" Y LA "POLÍTICA" HAN SIDO CONCEPTUALIZADOS EN DISTINTAS ÁREAS DE LA FILOSOFIA POLÍTICA CONTEMPORÁNEA. SU ARGUMENTO CENTRAL ES QUE AMBOS CONCEPTOS ESTÁN INELUDIBLEMENTE CONECTADOS Y QUE TAL INTERCONEXIÓN NO HA SIDO PLENAMENTE RECONOCIDA EN LOS DEBATES LIBERAL COMUNITARISTA, POSTESTRUCTURALISTA Y DE DEMOCRACIA DELIBERATIVA. LA AUTORA DEFIENDE UNA CONCEPCIÓN POSLIBERAL DEL YO QUE RECONOCE UNA CONEXIÓN CERCANA Y QUE ES ENSANCHADA, CON "LO POLÍTICO". BASÁNDOSE EN LA CRÍTICA DE LA POLÍTICA LIBERAL DE CARL SCHMITT Y EN LAS PERSPECTIVAS SINGULARES DE HAMRNH ARENDT, NORMAN DESARROLLA UNA VISIÓN POSARENDTIANA MODERADAMENTE AGONÍSTICA. ESTA VISIÓN DE …
How To Survive The Apocalypse, Stephen Asma
How To Survive The Apocalypse, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The article presents a guide on how people with skepticism and critical thinking can survive the Rapture and Armageddon. According to the Book of Revelations, the Lord will return to the earth to separate the good and the bad. When the Great Tribulation comes, people have no more time for repentance. The impostor strategy is one way to avoid the Tribulation.
Dinosaurs On The Ark: Natural History And The New Evangelical Museum, Stephen Asma
Dinosaurs On The Ark: Natural History And The New Evangelical Museum, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
This article examines the Creation Museum in Kentucky. Featured at the museum is a replica of Noah's Ark. The author notes that there is some fudging going on to fit all the supposedly transported animals in such a small vessel. According to the museum, the Grand Canyon was not millions of years in the making but appeared after the flood. The evangelical museum is an offshoot of the Answers in Genesis ministry. Ken A. Ham is the director of the museum as well as the head of the ministry. He says that the notion of evolution has done more harm …

Politics And Volunteering In Japan: A Global Perspective, Mary Alice Haddad
Politics And Volunteering In Japan: A Global Perspective, Mary Alice Haddad
Mary Alice Haddad
Politics and Volunteering begins by painting a portrait of volunteering in Japan, and demonstrates that our current understandings of civil society have been based implicitly on a U.S. model that does not adequately consider participation patterns found in other parts of the world. The book develops a theory of civic participation that, incorporates citizen attitudes about governmental and individual responsibility, with societal and governmental practices that support (or hinder) volunteer participation. This theory is tested using cross-national and sub-national statistical analysis, and it is refined through detailed case studies of volunteering in three Japanese cities. The findings are then used …
Solomon's House, Stephen Asma
Solomon's House, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The article discusses the author's experience of touring the Creation Museum in Kentucky, which was opened in May 2007. He met the museum's director Ken A. Ham, and asked him various questions about the art exhibits. He inquired about the capacity of Noah's ark to carry all pairs of animals in it, and notes that the museum is scaling back the universe. He also shared that the biggest challenge facing the museum is making people see the difference in using the present method and one's belief.

Why Should Feminists Read The Bible?, Julie Kelso
Why Should Feminists Read The Bible?, Julie Kelso
Julie Kelso
Extract:
For many contemporary feminists, the Bible evokes a backward thinking, patriarchally defined body of literature and a social, political and economic ideological framework that has historically been used to maintain and perpetuate the oppression of women, along with that of non-white and/or non-Judeo-Christian 'others'.

Moral Blindness And Moral Progress, Matthew Pianalto
Moral Blindness And Moral Progress, Matthew Pianalto
Matthew Pianalto
We often speak of a person's being blind to the truth (or the obvious) and being blinded by love (and similarly by hate). The aim of this paper is to make sense of this seemingly metaphorical notion of blindness as it relates to moral judgment, and to show that there is an intelligible sense in which we can be "morally blind." The sexual harassment case depicted in the film 'North Country' provides a vivid illustration of moral blindness. Corrections of this blindness amount to true moral progress, rather than mere shifts in our moral standards.
Moral Conflict And The Indeterminacy Of Morality, Matthew Pianalto
Moral Conflict And The Indeterminacy Of Morality, Matthew Pianalto
Matthew Pianalto
Cases of moral conflict often occupy a central role in arguments against claims that moral judgments admit truth. In this paper, I argue that the employment of moral conflicts against the truth-susceptibility of moral judgments rests upon a false conception of the determinacy of morality.

Douglas Moggach, Editor. The New Hegelians: Politics And Philosophy In The Hegelian School, Todd Gooch
Todd Gooch
Of the thirteen essays collected in this volume, several of which discuss more than one thinker, approximately three are devoted to Marx, two to Feuerbach, two to Bruno Bauer, two to Max Stirner, and one each to Eduard Gans, Edgar Bauer, and Friedrich Engels. Underlying the diversity of their individual positions, these "New Hegelians" were united by a common interest in exploiting the conceptual resources of Hegelian philosophy to develop new categories for analyzing and transforming the European intellectual and social order after the collapse of the traditional estate system. The concluding essay by Ardis Collins draws on the discussion …
