Alice Munro's "Walker Brothers Cowboy" (The Norton Anthology of World Literature. Ed. Sarah Lawall. NY: Norton, 2002) is bracketed by similar images that establish the futility of trying to stop time. At the beginning of story, in order to explain to the narrator how the glaciers formed the Great Lakes, the father "shows me his hand with his spread fingers pressing the rock-hard ground where we are sitting. His fingers hardly make any impression at all ... " (3012); at the conclusion as Ben Jordan, the father, and his children prepare to return home from their odyssey, Nora Cronin touches …

The article presents an exploration of the theme of individual fate as seen in Alice Munro's short story "Walker Brothers Cowboy." The author presents an analysis of the theme throughout the book, particularly highlighting the personification of the Greek mythical figures of the three Fates and Tykhe in characters surrounding the protagonist Ben Jordan.

Never Mind Grendel! Can Beowulf Conquer The 21st-Century Guilt Trip?, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The writer casts doubt on whether the emasculated Beowulf put forward by J. R. R. Tolkien and in the recent movie version of the story transcends and nullifies the heroic original. He suggests that both Beowulfs may be necessary.

El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman
El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman
Emma R. Norman
LA AUTORA EXPLORA CÓMO LOS CONCEPTOS DEL "YO" Y LA "POLÍTICA" HAN SIDO CONCEPTUALIZADOS EN DISTINTAS ÁREAS DE LA FILOSOFIA POLÍTICA CONTEMPORÁNEA. SU ARGUMENTO CENTRAL ES QUE AMBOS CONCEPTOS ESTÁN INELUDIBLEMENTE CONECTADOS Y QUE TAL INTERCONEXIÓN NO HA SIDO PLENAMENTE RECONOCIDA EN LOS DEBATES LIBERAL COMUNITARISTA, POSTESTRUCTURALISTA Y DE DEMOCRACIA DELIBERATIVA. LA AUTORA DEFIENDE UNA CONCEPCIÓN POSLIBERAL DEL YO QUE RECONOCE UNA CONEXIÓN CERCANA Y QUE ES ENSANCHADA, CON "LO POLÍTICO". BASÁNDOSE EN LA CRÍTICA DE LA POLÍTICA LIBERAL DE CARL SCHMITT Y EN LAS PERSPECTIVAS SINGULARES DE HAMRNH ARENDT, NORMAN DESARROLLA UNA VISIÓN POSARENDTIANA MODERADAMENTE AGONÍSTICA. ESTA VISIÓN DE …

Invisible Enemies: The American War On Vietnam, 1975-2000, Edwin Martini
Invisible Enemies: The American War On Vietnam, 1975-2000, Edwin Martini
Edwin A. Martini
Beginning where most histories of the Vietnam War end, Invisible Enemies examines the relationship between the United States and Vietnam following the American pullout in 1975. Drawing on a broad range of sources, from White House documents and congressional hearings to comic books and feature films, Edwin Martini shows how the United States continued to wage war on Vietnam "by other means" for another twenty-five years. In addition to imposing an extensive program of economic sanctions, the United States opposed Vietnam's membership in the United Nations, supported the Cambodians, including the Khmer Rouge, in their decade-long war with the Vietnamese, …

Vea: Projecting Pornography In Mexico City, Transnational Bodies, And Acting Across The Sexual Frontier, Ageeth Sluis
Ageeth Sluis
This paper examines the articulation between the embodied city and changing gender norms in the wake of the Mexican Revolution, when the new state sought to reinvigorate and civilize Mexico City through urban reforms and public works. An analysis of the pornographic magazine Vea shows how views of "public women" were crucial to larger debates on gender and urbanization in Mexico City during the 1920s and 1930s. In the context of post World War I, a new, global ideal of the New Woman emerged through which women claimed both political and social mobility. Moreover, this ideology was articulated through a …
