Trends In The Contemporary Irish Novel: Sex, Lies, And Gender, Jennifer Jeffers
Trends In The Contemporary Irish Novel: Sex, Lies, And Gender, Jennifer Jeffers
Jennifer M. Jeffers
The 1990s Irish novel presents its own brand of uniqueness and sophistication to the contemporary Anglophone novel. In this article I divide the development of the 1990s Irish novel into three groups. The first type of novel that emerges in the 1990s concerns the presentation of a different image of Ireland, one that magnifies gender construction and sexual preference. The second group of novels concerns the act of reading itself and the difficulty in determining truth from lies. These novels impair the reader's ability to read in an effort to show that everything is a form of interpretation: memories, history, …

The Balance Between Mechanical And Creative Writing In David Copperfield, Ralph Matthews
The Balance Between Mechanical And Creative Writing In David Copperfield, Ralph Matthews
Ralph Frame Matthews
This thesis argues that Charles Dickens's novel, David Copperfield, represents writing as an art whose success depends on a dynamic relationship between the mechanical and the creative. The representations of writing in the novel comment on David's and Dickens's work as novelists. In the last section of my thesis, I argue that the novel extends this idea of balance to the ethical dimension of writing. This study is valuable and relevant insofar as it extends recent scholarly insights about the complex work of authorship to moments in the novel that have been neglected.

Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz
Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz
Michael J. Tevesz
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral has over forty large stained glass windows that range in age from the 15 to the 20th Century. The medieval windows were produced in England and Germany, while the more contemporary windows were produced by such prominent studios as those directed by Willet, Connick, Tiffany, Heaton, Young, and Burnham. The more contemporary windows are of considerable artistic and historical interest, but there is very little information available about them. This monograph specifically focuses on the windows of Trinity Cathedral produced by the Wilbur H. Burnham Studios. The Burnham Studios windows are the most accessible windows within the …

Frustrations Of The Documentary Linguist: The State Of The Art In Digital Language Archiving And The Archive That Wasn’T, Robert Vann
Robert Vann
This paper is a qualitative review and critique of existing electronic language archives from the perspective of the documentary linguist. In today’s day and age there are many online archives available for storage of and access to digital language data, among others: AILLA, ANLC, ASEDA, DOBES, ELRA, E-MELD, LACITO, LDC, LPCA, OTA, PARADISEC, Rosetta, SAA, THDL, and UHLCS. It is worth pointing out that I use the term language archive loosely in this paper, referring to a variety of organizations and resources such as those listed above that store and provide digital language data to different degrees and for different …

The Politics Of Representation: The Role Of The Gaze In Pornography, Jennifer Jeffers
Jennifer M. Jeffers
An accessible reader/text for beginning students of philosophy, this volume offers a broad scope of diverse classic and contemporary selections – with a narrative and format that presents difficult issues and readings in a simplified but not condescending manner. The readings are grouped around major philosophic themes: logic, ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, philosophy of art, and social and political philosophy. It also offers a selection of readings from Eastern philosophy.

Petronius’ Giton: Gender And Genre In The Satyrica, John Makowski
Petronius’ Giton: Gender And Genre In The Satyrica, John Makowski
John F Makowski
Encolpius, the narrator of the novel, exhibits an obsession with literature that impels him to interpret his world though the lens of earlier classics. Thus, Giton embodies analogues to both the heroes and the heroines of epic and tragedy often in the context of the picaresque. The fluidity of his gender roles mirrors the novel's fluctuation among the genres of literature. As backdrop to the Satyrica's play with gender and genre stands Nero's art of performing in both masculine and feminine roles on the Roman stage.
Artists' Papers In The George Arents Research Library: Sources For The Study Of Twentieth-Century American Art, Mark Weimer, Donna Cook
Artists' Papers In The George Arents Research Library: Sources For The Study Of Twentieth-Century American Art, Mark Weimer, Donna Cook
Mark F. Weimer
For nearly thirty years the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has actively acquired primary materials to support research and study in the field of art history including, as outlined in an internal collection development statement of 1961, "the papers of architects, artists, sculptors, industrial designers, cartoonists, photographers, art critics, educators, and the records of professional associations and galleries". Beginning with the gift of the papers of sculptors James Earle Fraser, Laura Gardin Fraser, and Anna Hyatt Huntington in the 1960s, and continuing to the recent acquisition of collections relating to Diego Rivera and Philip Evergood, …

Foreword And Preface, From Courier, Vol. Xxviii, No. 2, Fall 1993, Robert Fogarty, Mark Weimer
Mark F. Weimer
FOREWARD: When in 1962, I first visited the rare book collection of the Syracuse University Library to begin researching the history of the Oneida Community, I explored the foundation of what is now a distinguished and growing body of material related to America's most complex communal venture. That foundation had been laid when Lester G. Wells, then curator, acquired a full run of the Community periodicals and a substantial body of pamphlets. The "O. C. Collection" as outlined by Wells in his 1961 bibliography* provided me with enough data to grasp the details of Community life reported in their own …
