His Soul Is Marching On: The Abolitionist Spirit Of John Brown, Sam Carlson Nov 2021

His Soul Is Marching On: The Abolitionist Spirit Of John Brown, Sam Carlson

Library Research Prize Student Works

In the time of Bleeding Kansas, a period of some of the most intense internal strife in US history, abolitionist John Brown was at the center of attention. His capture of Harpers Ferry and his public execution made him a symbol of the conflict within the nation, and it pushed the antislavery movement into the spotlight. Through speaking and through combat, the abolitionist spirit of John Brown divided America even further during the antebellum period. His great influence split up people for and against anti-slavery, both during his life and after his execution.

John Brown: The Hanged Hero, Sam Derfus Nov 2021

John Brown: The Hanged Hero, Sam Derfus

Library Research Prize Student Works

On Sunday October 16th, 1859, John Brown and 21 men besieged Harpers Ferry in an attempt to sow chaos and upheave the institution of slavery. Brown held the area for a few days before being captured, taken to court, and killed. Seen as an inciting incident in the American Civil War, the raid’s influence far outweighs its actual success. Brown may not have been able to abolish slavery himself, but he started a chain of events that would lead to his dream coming to fruition. Although Brown’s use of direct action as a means of creating change at Harpers Ferry …

Truth and Reconciliation History Project

A bibliography of resources about the history in Nebraska of Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Recent Refugees

We hope that these five bibliographies will prove fruitful in helping us to understand what our history has been, where we have gone astray, and what we can do to help bring about reconciliation in our community and in our state.

The discovery of what has happened in Nebraska in the last hundred and seventy years is not an easy task, but it is our goal in putting together this bibliography to begin that task. By putting together a picture …

Grayscale Thoughts: Reactions To Brown V. Board Of Education, Haylee Orlowski Oct 2021

Grayscale Thoughts: Reactions To Brown V. Board Of Education, Haylee Orlowski

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

The 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education established that the segregation of public schools based on race violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Across the United States, there was a spectrum of reactions to Brown. Responses ranged from optimism and celebration to anger and violence. This paper surveys the varied reception of Brown from politicians, parents, teachers, journalists, and other parties. It acknowledges the grayscale of opinions within and across demographic lines. The purpose of this paper is to recognize the complexity of a critical moment in the civil rights movement to prevent …

The Long Red Thread : How Democratic Dominance Gave Way To Republican Advantage In Us House Elections, Kyle Kondik Oct 2021

The Long Red Thread : How Democratic Dominance Gave Way To Republican Advantage In Us House Elections, Kyle Kondik

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

An incisive study that shows how Republicans transformed the US House of Representatives into a consistent GOP stronghold—with or without a majority.

Long-term Democratic dominance in the US House of Representatives gave way to a Republican electoral advantage and frequently held majority following the GOP takeover in 1994. Republicans haven’t always held the majority in recent decades, but nationalization, partisan realignment, and the gerrymandering of House seats have contributed to a political climate in which they've had an edge more often than not for nearly thirty years.

The Long Red Thread examines each House election cycle from 1964 to 2020, …

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko Oct 2021

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

There are currently 17.42 million veterans living in America today. These heroes dedicated their services in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War, leaving home and giving up the comforts of stability, family, and guaranteed safety to ensure that America remains a stable and safe place for individuals and families to call home, yet upon returning home themselves, our nation’s veterans have had to face immense hardships. About 40,000 veterans are without shelter in the U.S. on any given night; some of the leading causes of veteran homelessness include PTSD, social isolation, unemployment, and substance …

The Ku Klux Klan And Their Influence On The Education Of Mexicans In Kansas City, Kansas, 1922-1925., Robert Cleary

Librarian Publications

The post-World War I rise of the Ku Klux Klan developed differently in the Midwest of the 1920s than that of its post-Reconstruction origins. Its members in Kansas City, Kansas, came from professional and trades people who shared the common values of Americanism, anti-Catholicism, and white supremacy, and were invariably Protestant Republicans. The Klan’s interests in directing many aspects of civil life reacted to the growing Mexican community in three adjacent neighborhoods. Beginning in 1922, they successfully influenced education policy to create a segregated school, as well as separate facilities in all three neighborhoods. Resistance to segregated education by Mexican …

Warrioress In White: A Semiotic Analysis Of America's Joan Of Arc In The Women Of The Copper Country, Akasha Khalsa

Conspectus Borealis

Mary Doria Russell’s The Women of the Copper Country is a fictionalized historical account of the 1913 mining strike in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Significantly in this strike, a great deal of leadership was focused in the Union’s Women’s Auxiliary. In particular, one woman formed the backbone of the local movement. Known by her community as Big Annie, Anna Klobuchar Clements was the heart of the 1913 strike. Memories of her bravery linger today in the form of recorded testimonies by elderly community members, immortalization in plaques and songs, and Russell’s popular novel. Today she is remembered not as herself, not …
