Archeological Excavation And Reburial Of Unmarked Historic Graves In The Pioneer Cemetary (41bo202), Brazoria County, Texas, Angelina L. Tiné, Douglas K. Boyd
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Three unmarked graves within the predominantly African American Pioneer Cemetery in the City of Brazoria (Brazoria County), Texas, were exhumed and reburied within the cemetery. The graves were located within the right of way of State Highway 332, and were found during an earlier search phase done in conjunction with a planned expansion of the highway. The burial excavations and reburial were done in March and April 2003, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc., for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The graves contained the remains of three unknown individuals—a young woman (17–23 years old), an older woman (45–60 years old), …

Striking A Balance: The Unionization Of Portland State University’S Faculty, Amanda Taylor Ellertson
Dissertations and Theses
American college and university professors joined labor unions as early as 1916. But it was during the 1970s that higher education turned to collective bargaining as a way to raise the voice of the faculty and negotiate a fair and just work environment. Portland State University voted to have the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) represent them in collective bargaining in 1978. The thesis examines the history of PSU’s AAUP chapter and how unionization impacted the college campus and faculty life.
Collective bargaining in higher education encompasses more than negotiating salary and benefit packages. Since their inception, higher education …

Polish Immigrants And Industrial Chicago, Dominic Pacyga
Polish Immigrants And Industrial Chicago, Dominic Pacyga
Dominic Pacyga
How did working-class immigrants from Poland create new communities in Chicago during the industrial age? This book explores the lives of immigrants in two iconic Polish neighborhoods—the Back of the Yards and South Chicago—and the stockyards and steel mills in which they made their living.
Pacyga shows how Poles forged communities on the South Side in an attempt to preserve the customs of their homeland—how through the development of churches, the building of schools, the founding of street gangs, and the opening of saloons they tried to recreate the feel of an Eastern European village. Through such institutions, Poles also …

Would Brown Make It To New York City? The First Phase Of The Battle For School Integration, 1954-1957, Kristopher B. Burrell
Publications and Research
This conference paper looks at the struggle to desegregate New York's City's public schools in the immediate aftermath of the Brown v Board of Education decision in 1954. For the first three years following the Supreme Court decision, the New York City Board of Education make public overtures toward fulfilling the letter and spirit of Brown in New York, but in practice the Board of Education engaged in stalling and half-measures that succeeded in effectively stopping widespread school desegregation in the city.
