Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Political Science
The power of the “moderate” branch of the Islamic Movement (Alharaka al-Islamiyya, subsequently referred to as IM) Southern Faction (IMSF) in Israel stems from its ability to adapt to different situations, reconcile with the complex reality of being an indigenous minority in a state that defines itself a “Jewish state”, and operate within the state structure accepting democratic processes that have long been debated to clash with Islamism. Besides being represented in the Israeli Knesset since 1996, the culmination of this adaptation was the joining of the movement to the short-lived Zionist coalition government on 2 June 2021 (the government …

The Ring Cycle: Journeying Through The Language Of Tolkien’S Third Age With Corpus Linguistics, Michael Livesey
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article explores the journey taken by the One Ring across J.R.R. Tolkien’s Third Age writings. It employs a digital humanities approach to analyse linguistic patterns in Tolkien’s use of the word ring, across The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Specifically, the article employs corpus linguistic methods to track shifts in the quantities and qualities of the Ring’s appearance across these texts. It uses techniques of keyness and collocation analysis to trace transformations in these quantities/qualities, including: a) the Ring’s transition from a central to a peripheral place in the Third Age’s narrative arc; and b) …

Enseignement De La Traduction Automatique Et De La Post-Édition : Enquête Sur L’Adéquation Des Formations Universitaires Avec La Réalité Du Terrain Du Traducteur, Sara Salmi
Al-Kīmiyā
Nowadays, machine translation has become part of many translators’ working environment, and its informed use can add value to their work (Loock, 2019). It is imperative for universities to teach students the necessary skills to adapt to these emerging technologies and a constantly evolving market. The survey, conducted as part of a master’s research thesis, aimed to evaluate the adequacy of post-editing training and its alignment with the reality of the translator’s activity. We sought to measure the role of post-editing in the translator’s activity by surveying professionals through a questionnaire and gathering their feedback on the adequacy of post-editing …

Reframing Palestine: "Mornings In Jenin Or David’S Scar?" A Narrative Account Of The Persian Translation Of Susan Abulhawa’S Mornings In Jenin, Atieh Asadollahi Hamedani
Al-Kīmiyā
This article, with narrative theory mainly of Baker applied, explores how the translation of Susan Abulhawa’s Mornings in Jenin in Persian reframes the Palestinian-Israeli conflict narrated by a Palestinian-American author. The hyphenated narrative position of the author provides her with more than the narratives of a monolithic ‘self’ and makes her challenge some of them. The language (English) she has chosen to narrate in also reveals the global audience her narrative is targeted at. However, the translator doesn’t seem to associate her translation with such a narrative position of the author on the issue of self/other. The narrative aimed to …

Le Français Au Sénégal De 1817 À 1960 : D’Une Langue Imposée À Une Langue Qui S’Est Imposée, Harouna Dior
Al-Kīmiyā
Today’s study traces the course of the French language and the role it played during colonization in Senegal. It is a mission that it accomplished well and which allowed it to be chosen as the official language of independent Senegal in 1960. The article looks back on the use of French from mutual education to the accession of the country to independence, passing through the secular school and the school of the hostages of Faidherbe, as well as the major reorganization of teaching in 1903 in the AOF. Then, the impact of the exclusive use of French in colonial education …

Most of the time, translators strive to achieve absolute neutrality towards the text they are translating. However, to what extent can this neutrality be achieved, and what is the distance that may separate the translator from the text? Translators can be affected by multiple factors, including cultural, ideological, and psychological factors that can influence their neutrality. In view of that, this article sheds light on the impact of ideological factors on the translation process. It examines various ideologies that may affect the work of the translator, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, and ultimately, how these influences manifest in the …
Le Schème, Concept Fondateur De La Grammaire Arabe : À La Recherche Des Origines, Madyan Matar
Le Schème, Concept Fondateur De La Grammaire Arabe : À La Recherche Des Origines, Madyan Matar
Al-Kīmiyā
Researching the roots of grammatical ideas remains a far-reaching scientific undertaking, as it leads to a better understanding of the epistemic foundations of grammatical theories. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore the first historical clues as to the potential origins of the concept of pattern (wazn), one of the flagship concepts of Arabic grammar. Since no one in the scientific community seems to have brought up where this concept came from before, the current study intends to start by discussing the hypotheses that could identify the origins of the concept. The paper then draws on the available …

De La Spécificité De L’Interprétation Par Téléphone (Français-Arabe) – Étude De Terrain, Mohannad Alhalaki
Al-Kīmiyā
This field study was carried out with 10 public service interpreters by telephone in France with the aim of highlighting the aspects considered by practitioners as a source of constraints specific to the French-Arabic language pair. Three main questions were addressed with the participants: (1) the difficulties inherent to the variety of dialects spoken by Arabic-speaking users and (2) the issues of cultural differences between interpreter and users. The thematic analysis of data collected highlighted production and comprehension constraints due to the large dialectal diversity in the Arabic-speaking world, which partly explains the effort made by interpreters to adapt their …

Innovation And Responsibility: Librarians In An Era Of Generative Ai, Inequality, And Information Overload, Odin H. Halvorson
School of Information Student Research Journal
In an era marked by generative AI, widening inequality, and information overload, librarians with LIS training find themselves at the forefront of a changing landscape. The traditional paradigm in academia is challenged by new technologies and social shifts, prompting a reassessment the librarian's role as a public leader. This article discusses three perspectives on these issues, placing them within the larger conversation of the LIS field. Dr. Norman Mooradian lays the groundwork for a paradigm shift by exploring the intersection of knowledge and ethics in a knowledge economy. Boheme Morris delves into the complexities of inequality within the high-tech knowledge …

The following outlines selected key concepts for an ethics of knowledge and their relationship with cognate areas of inquiry and practice.
English Language Challenges Faced By Licensed Guide Interpreters In Japan, Naoko Tanaka
English Language Challenges Faced By Licensed Guide Interpreters In Japan, Naoko Tanaka
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
This study investigates the challenges licensed guide interpreters in Japan encounter related to using the English language by examining foreign language tour guides’ use of English through interviews and surveys. The findings reveal that guides prioritise effectively conveying information and cautionary points to guests. They adjust their speaking speed, pronunciation, volume, vocabulary, and sentence structures to ensure easy understanding. Approximately 80% of the vocabulary used is at or below B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), indicating the issues which non-native speakings guides face. Moreover, they use various methods to confirm understanding, such as repeating …

Gen Z And Millennials Have An Unlikely Love Affair With Their Local Libraries, Kathi Inman Berens, Rachel Noorda
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
A phone fixation may seem at odds with an attraction to books. But the latter may offer a much-needed reprieve from the former. In our recent study of American Gen Z and millennials, we discovered that 92% of them check social media daily; 25% of them check multiple times per hour. Yet in that same nationally representative study, we also found that Gen Z and millennials are still visiting libraries at a healthy clip, with 54% of Gen Zers and millennials trekking to their local library in 2022. Our findings reinforce 2017 data from the Pew Research Center, which showed …

Divisive Or Descriptive?: How Americans Understand Critical Race Theory, Alauna Safarpour, Kristin Lunz Trujillo, Jon Green, Caroline High Pippert, Jennifer Lin, James N. Druckman
Political Science Faculty Publications
Critical Race Theory (CRT) has become a flashpoint of elite political discord, yet how Americans actually perceive CRT is unclear. We theorize that Republican elites utilized a strong framing strategy to re-define CRT as an “empty signifier” representing broader racial and cultural grievances. Using a survey and a pre-registered experiment among U.S. adults (N = 19,060), we find that this strategy worked. Republicans exhibit more familiarity with CRT and hold more negatively valenced (and wide ranging) sentiments toward CRT, relative to Democrats. Moreover, compared to teaching the legacy of racism in schools, Republicans are significantly more opposed to teaching CRT …

The Qualitative Report
In this article, we share insights regarding an arts-based research project where carers of people with dementia conveyed their experiences in cloth. Carers face high rates of mental ill health and burnout, while forming a largely undervalued and unrecognised workforce. Through this project, carers’ knowledge was valued and amplified using an innovative methodology – craftivism. During a series of five workshops in 2021, a small group of carers, researchers and artists gathered online to develop an exhibition of craftivist textile works. They evoked the complexity of their makers’ journeys supporting loved ones at the end of life, finding joy and …
Influence Of Preaching’S Rhetorical Appeal On Evangelical Listeners’ Motivation, Nicholas Anene Oji
Influence Of Preaching’S Rhetorical Appeal On Evangelical Listeners’ Motivation, Nicholas Anene Oji
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Preaching is a form of rhetorical narratology aimed at persuading its audience via sermons to experience a renewal of the mind and the transformation of their life. While previous research established the fact that listeners comprehend sermons through their rhetorical appeal, it has been unclear how this has motivated evangelical listeners to act. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to explore how the rhetorical appeal of preaching influences evangelical listeners’ motivation at evangelical churches in Savannah, Georgia. A comprehensive approach to exploring a sermon’s rhetorical appeal was utilized by focusing jointly on individual perception and social context. The …
From Panels To Shelves: The Evolving Intersection Of Comics And Italian Libraries. History, Issues, Perspectives, Andrea Tosti
From Panels To Shelves: The Evolving Intersection Of Comics And Italian Libraries. History, Issues, Perspectives, Andrea Tosti
SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education
Despite comics' popularity and cultural significance in Italy, its integration into Italian libraries has been slow, problematic, and uneven. This is reflected in the scarcity of academic research on the topic, which demands further in-depth exploration.
In the context of Italian libraries, characterized by chronic underfunding and staffing shortages, comics might be perceived as a low priority. However, as essential cultural institutions, libraries must strive to reflect both the contemporary era and the evolving reading habits of their audience. Comics, in this regard, could prove to be – and in part already are – a critical resource, a 'booster' for …

Developing And Sustaining A Graphic Scholarship Collection For Academic Libraries, Stewart Brower, Toni Hoberecht, Zane Ratcliffe, Bethie Seay
SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education
In early 2021, the Schusterman Library at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa satellite campus took a new step towards building a culture of interest by creating the Graphic Scholarship Collection. This new endeavor is a curated collection of graphic novels, primarily non-fiction, aligned with the academic programs on campus, as well as promoting University initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion. A new organizational structure for the collection materials and their circulation metrics will be examined in detail. There will also be consideration of the challenges of selection and acquisition by a mixed team of selectors, some of whom have no experience …

The Qualitative Report
The implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 marked a new chapter in global development and laid the foundations for addressing inequalities that hinder holistic progress. However, gender gaps pose a significant threat to achieving these goals. Project DREAM (Developing Resilience, Education, Aspiration, and Motivation) sought to explore women’s sense of aspiration, achievement, and lived experience in India, Syria, and the Philippines, as well as develop pilot interventions to address gender disparities. Semi-structured interviews with 69 young women from India, Syria, and the Philippines informed the development of three interventions, namely an aspiration and job skills workshop …
Associating Academic Identity With Language Socialization In Virtual Community: A Case Study Of A Chinese Graduate Student’S Learning Experiences In Religion Studies, Xiaolong Lu
The Qualitative Report
This longitudinal case study explored the academic identity and language socialization of a Chinese graduate student enrolled in an online religion course at a U.S. university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected via online classroom observations, oral interviews, and artifacts. The theoretical framework was taken from language socialization and identity, together with positioning theory. The study differs from previous research, arguing that instead of language competence, the constructed academic identity is occasionally crucial for the successful academic discourse socialization of international students in bilingual and virtual settings. Moreover, the inclination toward interactive positioning between students and instructors can arise …
Galileo And The Church: An Ecological Perspective, Holly J. Lawson
Galileo And The Church: An Ecological Perspective, Holly J. Lawson
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
The post-medieval church was surrounded by intense sociocultural factors, including the recent Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Although “the Galileo affair,” as it has been dubbed in the years since, is generally presented as a case example of the conflict between science and faith or religion, it is far more complex than these two issues alone. Galileo’s discoveries supporting the Copernican theory entered a complex interplay of factors, eventually leading to a highly pressurized encounter between Galileo and the Inquisition. Galileo’s indictment is a nuanced, poignant example of the rich cultural and contextual factors that drive clashes of religion …

Access To Urban Leisure: Investigating Mobility Justice For Transgender And Gender Diverse People On Public Transport, Shahin Shakibaei, Oscar Vorobjovas-Pinta
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Literature on mobility justice suggest that socially disadvantaged people experience uneven access to movement. The theme of diversity in terms of gender and its interplay with mobility and leisure have attracted some scholarly attention. However, research into transgender and gender diverse mobilities and its impact to leisure access remains limited, particularly from non-Western perspectives. This paper endeavors to fill this gap by investigating transgender and gender diverse mobilities in Istanbul, Turkey. Drawing upon 49 qualitative interviews with gender diverse and transgender public transport users in Istanbul, this study contributes to a scholarly discussion exploring the relationship between gender diversity, mobility, …
