The Storyteller: Observations On Murtada Bulbul’S ‘Swineherders’, Sharon Sliwinski

Sharon Sliwinski

This review engages Murtada Bulbul's series of photographs of Bangladeshi swineherders (published in this issue), casting the photographer's treatment as that of a storyteller. On one hand, this treatment suggests the importance of visual-cultural forms for the very legibility of human rights. On the other hand, Bulbul's pictures can teach us something about what it means to live a "bare life," that is, to live at the edges of the human community.

Historical Sociolinguistic Approaches To Derivational Morphology: A Study Of Speaker Gender And Nominal Suffixes In Early Modern English, Chris C. Palmer

Chris C. Palmer

Sociolinguistic variables, such as gender, help nuance historical claims about language change by identifying which subsets of speakers either lead or lag in the use of different linguistic variants. But at present, scholars of historical sociolinguistics have focused primarily on syntax and inflectional morphology, often leaving derivational morphology unexplored. To fill this gap in part, this paper presents a case study of men’s and women’s use of five different nominal suffixes- ‑ness, ‑ity, -age, -ment, and –cion- within the fifteenth and sixteenth century portions of the Corpus of Early English Correspondence. This study finds that men led women in the …

When implementing EAD, archivists consider encoding findings aids as the easy part. Creating an XSLT stylesheet, in contrast, leaves many archivists feeling out of their element. However, armed with a basic understanding of HTML, a few preparatory steps, and the proper mindset, most archivists are capable of making a user-friendly web presentation for their finding aids.

Review Of Unionists, Loyalists And Conflict Transformation In Northern Ireland By Lee Smithey, Margo Shea

Margo Shea

The cessation of violence in Northern Ireland did not signal an end to conflict; rather, it ushered in an era marked by different kinds of contestations experienced within as well as across traditional sectarian divides. In Unionists, Loyalists and Conflict Transformation in Northern Ireland, the sociologist Lee Smithey contributes to a growing literature on the uncertain and arduous processes that accompany conflict transformation. Smithey develops a nuanced understanding of identity formation. Examining a rich set of examples of public displays and performances of heritage and cultural expression in Protestant, Unionist, and loyalist communities, Smithey explains the significance of—and also …
