The Emergence Of An Icon: The Frida Kahlo Cult, Teresa Neva Tate
The Emergence Of An Icon: The Frida Kahlo Cult, Teresa Neva Tate
Dissertations and Theses
At her death in 1954, Frida Kahlo was known as little more than the wife of muralist Diego Rivera. Since then her art and personae have taken on a cult-like following and she has become an icon of popular culture. Thus far Frida's repute has stretched across three decades, from the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s. Frida's popularity is viewed as primarily emerging from the Women's Movement of the 1970s. However, interest from many other groups have carried her image into the 1980s and 1990s. Aside from the Women’s Movement, Frida's popularity reflects a growing interest in Mexico, specifically …

Caroline Bartlett Crane And Progressive Era Reform: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of Ideology In Action, Linda J. Rynbrandt
Caroline Bartlett Crane And Progressive Era Reform: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of Ideology In Action, Linda J. Rynbrandt
Dissertations
This dissertation is a sociohistorical analysis of women and social reform in the Progressive Era. Until recently, the role of women has been virtually invisible in accounts of Progressive social reform. While this is no longer the case, considerable questions remain. Using the archival records of one woman, Caroline Bartlett Crane (1858-1935), which document her professional, intellectual and personal life, I describe her contribution to social reform and early sociology. I analyze how her life and work reveals a greater understanding of current feminist debates and other social, historical and political questions.

Orphans And Guardians In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Sarah M. Goldberger
Orphans And Guardians In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Sarah M. Goldberger
History Theses & Dissertations
This study will demonstrate that changes in the early American family can often indicate significant changes in early American culture. These changes are especially apparent in the ways in which eighteenth-century Tidewater Virginians provided for poor and wealthy orphans in Middlesex and Henrico counties. Employing a patriarchal system of patronage, colonial Virginians relied upon both the local community and individual households to care for the colony's orphans. As the early American household became more nuclear and sentimental in the late eighteenth century, such relationships of patronage between the household and community began to erode. By evaluating colonial court orders, deeds, …
